To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDMUND FILE, a subject of the King of England, and resident of East Peckham, Paddock Wood, Kent, England, have invented Improvements in and Relating to Bottle, Jar, and Like Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the sealing of ordinary bottles, jars and the like for preserving fruit, vegetables, meat and other articles, and consists of an india-rubber band with a projection on the inside, and a glass or metal disk. The india-rubber band being smaller than the top of the bottle or jar, on being stretched over same causes the two upper edges of band to close together. The disk being inserted between the two said edges, hermetically seals the jar.
ln sterilizing fruit and the like a piece of wire is inserted between the disk and upper edges of band for vent, at boiling point the removal of said wire followed by cooling of ar, causes a vacuum.

It is understood that the use otelastic' bands has been previously proposed for fixing covers on to jars and the like.
