Description

aearsma am l @time y SMITH, or SANFRANCISCO,` CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 95,054, dated September 21, 1869. Y
IMPRQVEMENT INl sr.ovv-erneuterA vALvEs Fon WATERcLosETs The Schedule referred vto inthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To ,all whom 'it mwy concern 'ment in valves for water-closets, whereby they are rendered more useful and durable than they have hitherto i been.; and
consists 1n theconstruction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described. Y
The drawing represents a vertical longitudinal sec- 'tion vof the valve.
1 "i A represents the valve-shell, or tube, formed of dif-` ferent sections, which are screwed together with packing secured in 'thejoiuts,`as seen in the drawing.
B isl the4 Socket, from which arod extends to the seat of the closet, which 4seat is hinged, so lthat it yields to the weight of a person sitting on it.
In this manner the socket B is depressed, and with itV the spindle C, with thetube D, which hears on the inner packingc of thevalvef, and drives the spindle G, with the plunger AI-I, into the chamber I. While the valve is' in this position, no Water can pass through it. 4
When the seat is relieved Yof the weight'of the'I person, the spring J lifts the spindle O and tube D from the packing c, when the water flows through the tube C and water-waysk k, (at its upper end,) and through the outlet-pipe L tothefbasin. A t
'lhe plungerH, having been depressed, (or forced into the chamber' 1,) would be `forced upward by the f spring/m, but for the following reason:
yThe chambers N` and I, being filled with water or oil, or other` more 'elastic fluid, the descent of the plunger H causes the water or other uid to escape past the elastic wash'erc to the upper chamber N.
Now, before the valve and plunger can ascend again to close thel valve, the displaced fluid, now occupying the chamber N, must return to the lower chamber I, but this is prevented by the elastic washer o, and it-is retained in the chamber, exceptas it escapes through a vertical channel in the plunger, marked p, which permits the iluid tov return gradually, thereby suspending 4,the valve a sufficient length of time to give the refluisite wash Ato thebasimtc.
' The spindle Gr is -tted accurately to the orifice in the partition, and works through it almost water-tight. The valve f, when closed, bears' against the packing q`. rIlhis packing q is fitted tightly around the tube.
D, and prevents any leakage around the tube while the valve is depressed,v
To prevent leakage around the spindle O, thatportion ofthe shell through which it passes y(nearlyinA contact,) is turned out dishing and provided with a cupped leatherv gland, fr, which is tted thereto, and
compressed and kept to. its seat bythe spring J. By p this method of packing the spindle, the wear of the gland is compensated by the pressure of the spring.
It will be seen that the principal improvement in .this valve consists in separating the suspending-chamhers N and I. from the water-passage. By this method, Iam, enabled to make a self-suspending valve, that will be reliable under' all circumstances.
Grit, sand, and other impurities contained in the. lsupply-water cannot affect the operation of the valve.
The primary fluid, as water, oil, spirits, or any other non-elasticluid, is retained in the suspending-chambers at all times, thereby insuu'ng the perfect working of the valve under all circumstances.
1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenty l. A valve for water-closets, havingits-suspendingchanibers'partitioned oi` from, and having no commu- 4nication with the vwater-passages, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes specified. 2. 1n combination with'the plunger H, the chamber N, gland lr, and tube D, the spindles O and G,
valve f, packing 'or valve-face q, and packing e, ar-
ranged substantially as shown and'described,'for the purposes set forth.
