To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRED W. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State ot' New York, have invented-new and useful Improvements in Cutlery, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cutlery, and more particularly to an improved handle for a safety razor.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved form of handle which lnay be readily used in combination with any form of safety razor in which the cutting edge of the blade is at right angles to the handle.
The usual form of safety razors of this type are provided with a c lindrical handle. lIn shaving with razors o this type it has been found that there is a natural tendency to draw the blade downward over the face with its cutting edge at right angles to the direction of travel, which removes the hair by a boeing action very disagreeable and especially undesirable to a person having a tender skin.
The form of the handle contemplated in thisI invention will naturally cause the cutting edge of the razor to engage the face at an angle to the direction of travel, making it extremely ditlicult, if not impossible, for the operator to draw the blade over his face in any other relation. The advantages of such a construction are obvious, as the eutting edge of blade will always be an larly disposed in relation to the direction o travel and thereby remove the hair by a slicing action instead of a hoeing action which will cause the safety razor provided with this handle to shave with as much ease and with as little discomfort as the well known straight blade razor in general use.
While the preferred form of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawing, yet it is to be understood that minor detail changes may be made withoutdeparting from the scope thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the operation of this invention in use. Fig. Q is an enlarged view in side elevation of the completedevice. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. l showin the handle in section. Figs. 4:- and 5 are en arged sectional views illustrating modified forms of handles.
The handle 1 is adapted to bel rigidly secured in any well known manner to the operating parts of the blade holding mechanism in such a Way that the handle is at right angles to the plane of the cutting edge of the blade. In the form illustrated the handle l is shown secured to the curved base plate 2 provided with an outer curved securing plate 3 adapted to retain a resilient blade 4 between the two. It is to be understood that this specific form of blade holding mechanism is not a part of this invention, as the handle may be applied to any other form of safety razor of thls general type.

All the faces 5 u on the handle are angularly disposed in re ation to the cuttin y edge of the blade 4, and therefore when the operator picks up the razor and draws the same over his face the ane'ularly disposed' surfaces of the handle will cause him to grasp the same in such a manner that the cutting edge of the blade will normally travel at an angle to the direction of movement, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
As the angular] disposed faces are perfectly .,ymmetricaly the razor may be used with either hand and the same results produced in each case.
In the case of this general type in which the blade is provided with buty one cutting edge only,the two faces or surfaces on the side of the handle adjacent to the cutting edge of the blade are only necessary to the operation of this invention, so the other faces may therefore be dispensed with and that part of the handle may be either fiat or curved without in any way affecting the result accomplished. Furthermore in a razor of this type having but one cutting edge and when it is desired to use only one hand in shaving, only one angularly disposed surface or face need be applied.
What I claim is:-
1. In a safety razor, a cutting blade, a guard, a handle and means for supporting the blade upon the handle at right angles to the cutting ed e, said handle provided with four opposite y disposed faces with two diametrically opposite edges lying in a plane at right angles to the cutting edge of the blade.
2. In a safety razor of the type described, a handle having aplurality of oppositely disposed faces meetlng in edges lying in planes at right angles toeach other with one plane at right angles to the cutting ed e of the blade whereby when the hand e is grasped and the razor drawn over the face, the cutting edge will be normally disposed at an angle to the direction of travel.
3. In a razor, a thin fiat blade provided with one or more cutting edges, a handle mounted at an an le to the plane of said blade, and angular y disposed means upon the handle for normallyv disposing the cutting edge atan angle to the direction of travel during the operation of,shaving.
4. In a razor, a thin flat blade provided with one or more cutting ed es, dand a handle mounted at an angle to t e plane of the blade, said handle provided with one or more surfaces with the plane of the edges of one surface at an angle to the cutting edge providing means for normally disposing the cutting edge at an angle to the direction of travel during the operation of shaving.
5. In a razor, a thin fla-t blade provided with one or more cutting edges, and a handle mounted at an angle to the plane of the blade, said handle provided with a plurality of surfaces angularly disposed in relation to the cutting edge of the blade, one of which is adapted to be engaged by the hand when the razor is operated, whereby the cutting edge is normally disposed at an angle to the direction of travel during the operation of shaving.
6. In a razor, a thin fiat blade provided' wlth one or more cutting edges, and a handle mounted at an angle to the plane of the blade, Said handle provided with one or more concave surfaces with the plane of the edges of one surface at an angle to the cutting edge providing means for normally disposing the cutting edge at an angle to the (lirection v of travel during the operation of shaving.
