Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that we, Fonnns'r HILL and Yunnan E. HILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vagon- Loaders and Graders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wagon loaders and graders, the object being to provide a machine which is so constructed that it can be easily and quickly operated and one which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, the parts being so arranged and connected that they are not likely to get out of order in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide automatic means for operating the scoop whereby it can be raised with its load so that the same can be dumped into a wagon.
A still further object of the invention is to provide novel means for raising the scoop whereby a positive movement will be imparted to the same by the operation of a lever.
A still further object of the invention .is to provide a machine which is mounted on wheels having a clutch mechanism mounted on a drive axle for operating a drum which carries a. cable for operating the hoisting frame.
A still further object of the .invention is to provide the main axle of the machine with driving wheels having ratchet hubs which are adapted to be engaged by pawls carried by fixed members whereby the axle will be rotated on the forward movement of the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a frictional brake in connection with the winding drum whereby the hoisting frame carrying the scoop can be lowered after the load has been dumped out of the same smoothly.
A still further object of the intention is to provide a pivoted scoop which is so constructed that when in a lowered position it will be held firmly when the same is driven into the ground as the machine is moved forwardly and it will also be held firmly with-- out any danger of it moving in any Way.
A still further object of the invention is to provide novel means for dumping the scoop when in a raised position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide automatic means for throwing the clutch so as to stop the winding of the drum when the scoop has reached its uppermost position.
WVith these objects in View, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved machine partly in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the hub of the wheel and pawl carrying ca p, the rim being partly shown in elevation. Fig. 4. is an inside view of the pawl carrying cap. Fig. 5 is an elovation of the wheel with the pawl carrying cap removed and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing a modified form of means for raising the hoisting frame by hand.
In carrying out our improved invention we employ a tri-angular frame A provided with a drive axle B at one end having driving wheels C loosely mounted thereon which are provided with internally toothed hub portions C adapted to be engaged by spring actuated pawls D carried by caps l!) which fit within the hub portions of the wheels and are secured to the axle so that they will rotate with the same whereby the axle will be rotated as the machine is moved forwardly. The other end of the tri-angular frame is supported by a c: ster wheel F and is also provided with a double tree G to which a pair of horses are adapted to be connected. The drive axle carries hold-backs G at its outer ends and it will be seen that by this arrangement the machine can be moved forwardly by a pair of horses so that the scoop which is arranged at the front of the machine will be in advance of the horses as will be hereinafter fully described.
Secured on the side members of the triangular frame A are standards II which are provided with braces It" so that the same will be held in a rigid position thereon without any danger of them moving.
A shaft H is mounted in the upper ends of the standards ll on which is pivotally mounted a substantially pyramidal hoisting frame J carrying hangers J which are pivotally connected to clips K secured to the sides of a scoop K which has runners K scoured on its bottom which extend out to the rear and are connected to the back of the scoop by braces K adapted to strike the axle when in a lowered position so as to hold the scoop firmly whereby all danger of it twisting is prevented when the same is forced into a pile of dirt. This hoisting frame is so mounted that it swings freely on the shaft, whereby it can be swung upwardly so as to raise the scoop in position as shown whereby it can be dumped into a wagon. For operating the scoop we employ a crank L which is carried by a sleeve L mounted on the shaft H between the standards H, said crank being connected to the sleeve by braces and having an operating rod L pivotally carried by its free end which extends forwardly and is secured in a T-coupling K pivotally mounted on the bail K of the scoop K whereby the scoop can be swung on its pivot so as to dump a load by forcing the operating rod forwardly which is accomplished by a lever L connected to the lower end of the crank L and connected thereto by a suitable brace, said lever extending rearwardly .over a platform A secured on the frame A adjacent to a seat A mounted thereon so that the operator can dump the scoop by simply pulling upwardly on the lever.
Mounted loosely on the axle B is a winding drum M which is provided with a ratchet wheel M carrying a toothed clutch member M adapted to be engaged by a coacting clutch member M which is slidably mounted on the axle and is keyed thereto, said clutch member l 3 being normally held into en gagement with the clutch member M by a coil spring ,l 4 whereby the drum will be revolved when the wheels are rotated. For operating the clutch member M we employ a pivoted crank N which is connected to the clutch member 1V 3 by a yoke in the ordinary manner and has an operating rod N connected to its outer end which extends back and is connected to a foot operated lever i 3 arranged adjacent the seat whereby the clutch mechanism can be thrown into and out of engagement for operating the same it of course being understood that the spring M only holds the clutch members into engagement after once being thrown.
Mounted on the drum M is a cable 0 which passes through a snatch block 0 carried by the pyramidal frame J and has its free end connected to the main cross bar of the frame whereby the frame will be swung forwardly and upwardly when the cable is operated so to raise the scoop after it has been loaded and secured on the cable is a clip 0 adapted to engage the snatch block so that at the last movement of the hoisting frame a direct pull will be obtained and it will be seen that by this arrangement when the frame with its load is first started the power is increased by the pulley until the clip carried thereby is brought into engagement with the block and then a direct pull is obtained so that the load will be raised faster. By this arrangement the sudden strain of' starting the frame carrying the loaded scoop is prevented which increases the life of the machine and prevents any of the parts being broken by sudden jerking which would be the case if a direct pull was obtained at the start.
In order that the upper movement of the hoisting frame may be stopped at the correct time we employ a crank P which has one of its arms connected to the operating rod N and the other arm to the hoisting frame by a rod P which is provided with a turn buckle so as to take up lost motion and it will be seen that when the hoisting frame reaches the desired position the crank is operated which in turn operates the crank N through the medium of the rod N which draws the clutch member M out of engagement with the clutch member M so as to stop the winding of the drum.
For preventing the drum from unwinding after the cable has been wound thereon we employ a pivoted pawl Q which is adapted to engage the ratchet M carried by the drum said pawl being operated by a crank Q to which a coil spring Q is connected and to which an operating rod R is connected which extends rearwardly and is connected to a foot lever B mounted adjacent the seat so that it can be easily operated in order to throw the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet when it is desired to lower the scoop after it has been dumped.
For regulating the speed of the drum we employ a frictional brake which comprises a drum S carried by the drum M and having a band S passing over the same, one end of which is connected to the cross beam of the frame A and the other to a crank S to which is connected an operating rod S which extends rearwardly and is connected to a pivoted lever T mounted adjacent the seat to which is connected a coil spring T which is of sufficient strength to hold the band taut over the frictional drum in order that the speed of the same will be regulated but if desired the lever can be grasped by the hand and the tension increased so as to decrease the speed of the drum which in turn decreases the descent of the hoisting frame. It will be seen that by this arrangement the hoisting frame can be lowered smoothly without any danger of allowing the same to drop with a jerk which would probably break the same as the spring will apply a sufiicient tension to the frictional brake to lint instead of employing the clutch mechanism as heretofore already described for operating the drum through the medium of the wheels we employ a ratchet V and a lever \V carrying a spring actuated pawl \V which is operated by a triangular shaped block X through the medium of a rod X and a lever X, and it will be seen that by working the lever X back ardly and forwardly the drum will be rotated so as to wind the cable Y and hoist the frame Y.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we have provided a machine which is provided with means for automatically raising the scoop after it has been filled and by operating a lever the load within the same can be readily dumped into a vagon but it is of course understood that this luaehine can be used with great advantages for carrying the load after it has been raised when the distance is very short thereby sav ing a great deal of time and expense.
\Vhat we claim is 1. A machine of the kind described comprising a f'alne provided with a caster at one end and a drive axle at the other end, power wheels mounted on said drive axle provided with internally toothed boxings, caps fixed on said axle provided with pawls fol-engaging said boxings standards arranged on the frame a shaft carried by the standards, a hoisting frame mounted on said shaft carrying a scoop and means operated by the axle for operating said hoisting frame.
In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame, of means for locking one pair of wheels to their respective axle, a hoisting frame carried by said frame, a scoop pivotally carried by said hoisting frame, a winding drum carried by the axle a cable carried by said drum passing over a pulley carried by the hoisting frame, means for locking said hoisting drum to the axle and means for operating said pivoted scoop.
3. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame, provided with standards, of a hoisting frame mounted on said standards, means operated by the drive axle for raising said hoisting frame together With means for disengaging said means whereby the upward movement of said hoisting frame will be limited.

In a machine of the kind described the combination with a frame, mounted on wheels, of standards fixed on said frame, a shaft mounted in said standards, a hoisting frame mounted on said shaft carrying a scoop, a Winding drum operated by one of the axles and a cable carried by said drum passing over a pulley carried by said hoisting frame together with means for locking said winding drum on said axle.
5. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a frame provided with standards of a hoisting frame mounted on said standards carrying a pivoted scoop a lever for tilting said pivoted scoop and means for raising said hoisting frame together with means for limiting the downward movement of the same.

In a machine of the kind described the combination with a frame carrying an axle at one end and provided with a caster at the other end, wheels loosely mounted on said axle means for locking said wheels to the axle when rotated in one direction, a winding drum loosely mounted on said axle carrying a cable, a hoisting frame mounted above said frame, a pulley carried by said hoisting frame, over which said cable passes, a stop arranged on said cable and means for locking said winding drum on said shaft.
7. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a frame provided with standards, of an axle mounted in said frame carrying power wheels for rotating said axle when moved in one direction, of a winding drum loosely mounted on said axle provided with a clutch member of a clutch member keyed on said axle a crank for operating the last mentioned clutch member for locking said winding drum to the axle, a hoisting frame mounted above said frame and a eable carried by the winding drum for operating said hoisting frame together with means for controlling the downward movement of the same.
8. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a frame provided with a platform, of an axle mounted in one end of the frame and a caster mounted in the other end under the platform, wheeled loosely mounted on the axle, means for locking said wheels to the axle, a winding drum carrying a ratchet and provided with a clutch member, a clutch member on said axle co-acting in said first mentioned clutch member, a hoisting frame carrying a scoop, a cable carried by a winding drum connected to said hoisting frame a pawl engaging said ratchet and means for operating said clutch together with means for operating said pawl.
9. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a frame having standards mounted thereon of a hoisting frame rarrying a scoop mounted on said standards a power axle mounted in one end of the frame carrying a winding drum means for locking said drum to said axle, a cable carried by the winding drum connectml to the hoisting fame and means operated by the hoisting frame for unlocking said winding drum when said hoisting frame has been raised into an upright position.
10. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a frame mounted on wheels standards arranged on said frame carrying a shaft, of a hoisting frame mounted on said shaft carrying a pivoted scoop provided with means for engaging the forward axle of said frame when in the lowest position and a lever operated crank for tilting said pivoted scoop.
11. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a tri-angular frame mounted on a caster at one end and provided with a power axle at the other end wheels mounted on said axle, a winding drum loosely mounted on said axle carry-- ing a frictional drum, a hoisting frame mounted above said tri-angular frame carrying a scoop, a cable arranged on the winding drum connected to said hoisting frame, a frictional band arranged over the frictional drmn operated by a spring actuated lever and means for locking said winding drum to the axle together with automatic means for unlocking said drum.
12. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a frame mounted on a caster at one end and provided with an axle at the other end carrying power axles a winding drum arranged on said axle, a hoisting frame mounted above said frame carrying a scoop, a pulley carried by said hoisting frame, a cable connected to said winding drum passing over said pulley connected to the main frame, a stop arranged on said cable and means for locking said winding drum to said axle together with means for preventing said drum from turning backwardly.
13. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame of a hoisting frame mounted above said frame carrying a scoop, means for raising said hoisting frame when said wheeled frame is moved forwardly together with means for locking said hoisting frame to drop into its normal position slowly.

In a machine of the kind described the combination with a pivoted hoisting frame carrying a scoop, of a block carried by said hoisting frame, a winding drum carrying a cable passing over said block,-a stop secured on said cable and means for operating said winding drum whereby the speed of the hoisting frame will be increased after said stop has engaged said block.

In a machine of the kind described the combination wit-h a wheeled frame carrying a pivoted hoisting frame of a winding drum carrying a cable for operating said hoisting frame, a stop carried by said cable means for operating said winding drum whereby the speed of the hoisting frame will be increased after said stop has engaged said block. 7

In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame carrying a pivoted hoisting frame of a winding drum carrying a cable for operating said hoisting frame, means for locking said hoisting frame to the power axle and means operated by said hoisting frame for unlocking said means when said hoisting frame reaches a raised position.
17. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame having a power axle at one end a winding drum loosely mounted on said axle carrying a cable, a hoisting frame mounted above said frame connected to said cable said winding drum being provided with a clutch member, a clutch member keyed on said axle operated by a crank a rod for operating said keyed clutch member and means connected to said rod operated by said hoisting frame for disengaging said clutch members.
18. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame having a power axle at one end of a hoisting frame mounted above said frame carrying a scoop provided with means for engaging said axle when in a lowered position, means operated by said axle for raising said hoisting frame and means for disengaging said means operated by said hoisting frame whereby the upward movement of said hoisting frame will be stopped automatically.
19. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a triangular frame carrying standards of a hoisting frame mounted on said standards carrying a pivoted scoop means operated by one of the axles of said wheeled frame for raising said hoisting frame together with means for automatically limiting the upward movement of the same.
20. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame provided with a drive axle at one end a winding drum carrying a frictional drum mounted on said axle means for locking said winding drum to the axle, a hoisting frame mounted above said frame, a cable carried by the winding drum connected to said hoisting frame, a frictional band passing over said frictional drum having a fixed end and a movable end and a spring actuated lever connected to the movable end whereby tension will be applied to said frictional band so as to retard the movement of said drum in order to allow the hoisting frame to drop into a lowered position.
21. In a machine of the kind described, the combination with a wheeled frame, of a pivoted pyramidal hoisting frame mounted above said frame normally held in a lowered position, a scoop pivotally carried by said hoisting frame provided with means for en gaging the forward axle of said frame, means for raising said hoisting frame to a horizontal position, together with a lever for tilting said scoop.
22. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame provided with a drive axle carrying power axles, means for locking said power axles to the axle, a winding drum for operating said hoisting frame means for locking said winding drum to the axle, means operated by said hoisting frame for unlocking said means and a pivoted scoop carried by the hoisting frame provided with means for tilting the same.
23. In a machine of the kind described the combination with a wheeled frame provided with standards of a shaft mounted in said standards, a hoisting frame mounted on said shaft carrying a pivoted scoop means for tilting said scoop, means operated by the axle of said frame for raising said hoisting frame automatic means for limiting the upward movement of said hoisting frame together with means for disengaging said means so as to allow the hoisting frame to drop back into a lowered position together with means for limiting the desired movement of said hoisting frame.
