Description

E. B. BROWN.
GORE FORMING APPARATUS.
APPLICATION IILED SEPT. 23, 1909. 950,202. Patented Feb.22,1910.
i j l lih 1 i WITNESSES: mmvran FIG. 4.
-0, 5? 15mm. H S zy" A a ATTORNEK UNITED s'rArns PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER E. BROWN, 01 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO BUCHANAN FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
CORE-FORMING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. a Core-Forming A paratus, of which the following is a speci cation.
My invention is a core forming apparatus comprising a box having means cooperating therewith to provide an aperture containing a character within the core, so that the metal east within the aperture of the core will be impressed with the character, as a numeral indicating its weight.
In the accompanyin drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a sash weight which it is desired to produce with a number thereon indicating the amount of metal which it contains; Fig. 2 is a broken perspective view of the core used in molding the end of the weight shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of my improved apparatus for making cores such as that shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the apparatus shown in Fig. 3.
The apparatus, as shown in Figs. 3 and 1 of the drawings, comprises a base 1 having thereon a post 2. A tapered finger or wedge 3 is engaged by a threaded shank 4 of the post, being held in position by means of a nut 5 engaging the shank. A core box 6 supported and movable upon the base 1 is provided with the o positely dis osed side apertures 7. A bot 8, adapte to pass through the box 6 by way of its apertures 7, has therein the channel or recess 9'. A spring 10 is fixed to the bolt 8 and carries a bed piece 11, which lies within the channel 9, the bed piece holding within the recess 12 thereof a type or character block 13. A lug .14 is fixed to the piece 11 to serve as a guide and stop for positioning the bolt 8 and the character in the box 6. V
In operation, when the bolt 8 has beeh inserted through the apertures 7 to the desired position in the box 6, the two are moved together along the base 1 so that the point of the finger 3 enters the channel 9 beneath the bed piece 11, which is rovided with the inclined surface 15 to faci itate the entry of the finger. The bed piece 11, is elevated against the action of the spring 1t), by the fin er 3 so that such piece engages the wall 0% the box, the bolt and box being firmly held in relation to each other and in position upon the base by the wedging action of the finger. The box is now filled with sand in the usual manner and the core shown in Fig. 2 is formed, the bolt forming the passage 17 extending through the core and the numeral on the character block forming a numeral within the passage. The core being formed, the box and the bolt are drawn back together so as to disengage them from the finger, whereupon the sprlng carries down the bed piece and disengages the numeral carried thereby from the core. The bolt can now be withdrawn from the box and core, without disturbing the structure of the latter, so that the core can be removed.
It will be understood that the core shown in Fig. 2 can be used for producing the end of the sash wei ht shown in Fig. 1, which has the eye 18 %ormed by the crown 19 of the core and the cross bar 20 bearing a numeral formed within the passage 17 of the core.
It will be observed that by means of the foregoing apparatus it is practicable to use a solid core box, with the attending advanta es thereof.
aving described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of a core box, a device adapted to pass through said box, a character, and means whereby said character is carried by and is movable relatively to said device.
2. The combination of a core box, mechanism adapted to pass through said box, a device carrying a character, a spring connected with said mechanism and supporting said device, and means adapted for moving said device against the action of said spring.
3 The combination of a core box having an aperture in a wall thereof, a bolt adapted to pass through said aperture, a character block, means comprising a sprin whereby said bolt supports said character %lock, and a finger whereby the position of said character block is varied.
4. The combination of a base, a post supported on said base, a finger supported by said post and extending substantially parallel to said base, a core box having apertures therethrough, a bolt containing a channel and adapted to be passed through the apertures of said box, a bed piece disposed within said channel and carrying a character, a
spring for connecting said bed piece with In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my said bolt, and a stop whereby the movement llilllll' this 20th day of September, 1909, in of Saul bolt through said apertures 16 (our lhv 'n'vsem-i- 01 the subscribing Wllllts'hld.
trolled, said finger being adapted to enter IGLMER E. BROWN. said channel beneath said bed piece and "ilnesses: elevate the Same against the action of said ROBERT JAMES EWING, spring. Joe. G. DENNY, Jr.
