CORE-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR K. Moonn, molder, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Core-Nlachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to core making machines, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having its parts so arranged as to tamp the material from which the core is formed and to force the packed material through a suitable opening, the tamping and ejecting operation occurring alternately.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and in which the parts are so arranged as to perform their functions efficiently and with certainty.
Nith the above, and other objects in View, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view upon the line 5-5 of Fig. l.
The improved core making machine is adapted to be operated either manually or by power and comprises a longitudinal base or platform 1, upon which is mounted a suitable hopper 2 having its open face enlarged and arranged at an angle so as to readily receive the material forming the core. The hopper 2 has its forward face constructed of heavier material than is the remainder of the hopper and this face is provided with an enlarged opening 3 which is adapted for the reception of a core outlet tube 4. This tube 4 is provided with a flange 5 which contacts the outer face of the wall of the hopper and limits the inward movement of the said tube. The front of the hopper is provided with oppositely disposed Specification of Letters Patent.

bolts 6 which are adapted for the reception of slotted retaining plates 7. The plates 7 are adapted to contact with the flange 5 of the tube 4 and to be retained in tight engagement therewith through the medium of suitable winged nuts 8 engaging the threaded bolts 6. By this construction and arrangement, it will be noted that outlet tubes of different sizes may be readily positioned upon the hopper and effectively sustained thereon so that cores of various sizes may be formed by the machine presently to be described.
The numeral 9 designates a pair of longitudinally extending members suitably spaced away from each other and positioned upon the platform 1 to the rear of the hopper 2. These members 9 are adapted for the reception of the ends of a sliding toothed plate 10. The tooth plate 10 is sustained upon the plates 9 through the medium of vertical spaced bracket members 11 having their lower ends provided with oflsets coinciding with the offsets provided from the ends of the plate which are adapted to serve as ways and prevent the lateral movementof the tooth plate 10. Mounted within the ears 11 is a suitable shaft 12 which is provided central of the said ears with a suitable toothed wheel 13 and which meshes with the teeth of the plate 10. Mounted upon the forward end of the sliding plate 10 is a detachable plunger 14 which is adapted to be posi tioned in a line with the core outlet tube 4 and to project through a suitable opening provided by the rear wall of the hopper 2. The shaft 12 is adapted to extend a suitable distance beyond one of the ears 11, and this projecting portion is adapted for engagement with a suitable link 15. The link 15 has its upper portion formed in the shape of a handle and has one of its sides provided with an offset boss 16 which terminates approximately central of and above the hopper 2. The boss 16 has its outer portion provided with interior threads adapted for engagement with a suitable bolt 17 through the medium of which the slotted extending portion 18 of a packing member 19 is adjustably connected with the sald boss.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that as the link 15 is swung it in turn rotates the wheel 13 causing the plate 10 carrying the plunger 14 to be Slld. within the hopper 2, thereby forcing the material from which the core is to be formed through the core' ou-tlet tube 4 and it will be further noted that as the link 15 is swung in the opposite direction the plunger let will be retracted and the tamper or packer member 19 is forced downwardly within the hopper 2 so as to contact the mass of material within the hopper.
It is at times desirable to operate the device by power, and in order to accomplish this I have provided the under face of the toothed plate 10 with spaced projecting arms 20, it being understood that the plunger member let is removably attached to the plate 10 carrying the arms 20. These arms 20 extend downwardly between the members 9 of the frame, and the said members 9 are each provided with alining opening adapted for the reception of a shaft 21 which is provided intermediate of the members 9 and between the arms 20 with an eccentrically connected wheel 22. The shaft 21 has one of its endsextending a suitable distance beyond one side of one of the members 9 and this projecting portion is adapted for the reception of suitable pulleys 23 which are adapted for engagement with a suitable belt connected with an engine or other source of power.
Positioned upon the platform 1 is a plurality, preferably two in number, of suitable flanged collars 24. These collars 24 have their flanges suitably connected with the platform 1 and are each provided with threaded openings communicating with their vertical bores and adapted for the reception of suitable threaded members 25.
The numeral 26 designates a core receiving member. This member 26 has its body portion substantially semicylindrical in cross section and has its under face provided with projecting rods 27, adapted to engage the bores of the collars 24 and to be retained in proper position to receive the core ejected through the tube 4, through the medium of the threaded elements 25. These core receiving members may be constructed in various sizes to agree with the size of the core and are each provided with rearwardly extending handle members 28 by which the said members may be readily lifted out of engagement with the bores of the collars 23.
In order to provide the core with a bent wire or with reinforcing rods I have provided the base 1 with a standard 50 positioned to the rear and approximately central of the sliding member 10. The member 10 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 51, and the standard 50 is provided with a hollow head 52 having a transverse threaded opening adapted for the reception 7 of a threaded element, such as a wing bolt 53, whereby a rod 54 may be retained within the hollow head of the standard and extend longitudinally through the opening 51 provided by the sliding plate 10, through the plunger let and within the core outlet tube a. By this arrangement it will be noted that the cores produced upon a machine constructed as above described may be easily and quickly provided with bent openings by simply allowing the rod 54 to be reciprocated through the core while at the same time the said rod 54% may be buried within the core so as to provide a reinforcing strip or member.
Having thus fully described the invention whatis claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a hopper adapted for the reception of plastic material, said hopper being provided upon its front and rear faces with alining openings, a core outlet pipe provided with a flange for one of the openings, means provided by the hopper for engaging the flange to secure the outlet pipe upon the hopper, a plunger for the opposite opening of the hopper, a sliding rack connected with the plunger, means for reciprocating the rack, a toothed wheel cooperating with the rack, and having a shaft, a link upon the shaft, an offset upon the link, and an adjustable packing member secured to the offset of the link.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a platform, a hopper adapted for the reception of plastic material upon the platform, said hopper having its opposite faces provided with alining openings, a core outlet tube having a flange adapted for engagement with one of the openings, means for removably securing the tube upon the hopper, a removable core receiving member upon the base and positioned adjacent the mouth of the outlet tube and in alinement therewith, spaced side members upon the platform at the rear of the hopper, a toothed rack slidably mounted upon said spaced members, downwardly projecting arms upon the bottom of the rack, an eccentrically mounted wheel between the depending arms, a removable plunger connected with the toothed rack and engaging the opposite opening of the hopper, guide ways for the toothed rack, a shaft mounted within the guide ways, a toothed wheel upon the shaft cooperating with the teeth of the rack, a lever upon the shaft, and an adjustable tamping member removably connected with the lever.
