HANGER FOR ELEVATED RAILS.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 3, 1809.

Serial No. 531,256.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, I-IAAKEN P. Hanson, citizen of the United States, residing at Albert Lea, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Elevated Rails, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention pertains to hangers for supporting elevated rails on which litter carriers and other wheeled devices are moved, and also to said rails; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous hanger and rail hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

In the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a rail and hangers constructed in accordance with my invention as the same appear when associated in use. Fig. 2 is a view showing one of the hangers in side elevation and the rail in transverse section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking downward.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:

A A are hangers comprised in my improvement, and B is the rail thereof.

The hangers A are identical in construction, and therefore a detailed description of the one shown in Figs. 2 and 3 will sutlice to impart an exact understanding of both. The said hanger, Figs. 2 and 3, is formed in one piece of material suitable to its purpose, and comprises an upper vertically-disposed portion (4 having an eye Z) and front and rear flanges c and (Z surrounding said eye, an intermediate vertically-disposed portion (2 arranged in a plane parallel to that of the portion a and having a stiffening and strengthening rib f at its back, an oblique portion 9 interposed between and joining the portions a and c and having a rib h at its back extending between the rear flange (Z and the rib f, and a lower portion 2' corresponding in width throughout to the portion a and extending downward from the portion 6 and rib f and then forward to a point in the same vertical plane as the por tion a and having a slot j, of right-angle form in cross-section, which extends throughout its width and has its upstanding mouth disposed in about the plane illustrated.

By virtue of the hangers being constructed in the manner set forth in the foregoing, they are strong in proportion to their weight and are capable of sustaining great burdens. The hangers are designed to be connected by bolts (not shown), passed through their eyes Z), to an overhead support (also not shown) and are also designed to depend in vertical positions from the belts or other connecting devices employed.

The rail B is made of steel or other suitable material and is of right-angle form in cross-section, as shown.

In assembling the parts of my improvement, the hangers A are slipped on an end or the ends of the rail B and are then fastened in position, or, on the other hand, the rail B is slipped endwise into the slots j of the hangers subsequent to the positioning of the latter.

By virtue of the hangers having the right angle slots j, they are adapted to hold the rail of right angle form in cross-section in a fixed and permanent position and against casual movement without the employment of connecting bolts, set screws or other extraneous devices; and it will also be noted that the hangers are adapted to hold the angular rail in such manner that the hangers do not interfere in any measure with the passage of the traveling wheels of littercarriers or other devices that may be moved on the rail.

The construction herein illustrated and described constitutes the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised, but it is to be understood that in the future practice of my invention such modifications may be made as do not in volve departure from the scope of my invention as defined in the claims appended.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A hanger for an elevated rail formed in one piece and comprising an upper vertical portion having an eye and front and rear flanges surrounding the same, an intermediate vertical portion disposed in a plane parallel to that of the upper portion and having a strengthening rib at its back, an oblique portion interposed between and joining the upper and intermediate vertical por- Patented Feb. 22, 1910.

tions and having a strengthening rib at its back extending between the rear flange of the upper portion and the rib of the intermediate vertical portion, and a lower portion corresponding in width throughout to the intermediate vertical portion and extending downward from said intermediate vertical portion and its rib and then forward to a point in the same vertical plane as the upper portion and having a slot, of right angle form in cross-section, which extends throughout its width and has an upstanding mouth.

2. A rail holder having in one side a railreceiving slot, of right-angle form in crosssection, which has a horizontally-disposed inner portion and a vertically disposed mouth.

3. A hanger for an elevated rail comprising a portion adapted to be connected with and to depend from a support, and a lower portion extending forward from the firstnamed portion and having in its upper side a slot of right-angle form in cross-section which extends throughout its width and has a horizontally-disposed inner portion and a vertically-disposed mouth.

In an elevated railway, a rail of rightangle form in cross-section, in combination with a hanger comprising a portion adapted to be connected with and to depend from a support and a lower portion extending forward from the first-named portion and having in its upper side a slot of right-angle form in cross-section which extends throughout its width and has a horizontally-distically disposed portion having an eye, an I intermediate vertically disposed portion arranged in a plane parallel to that of the upper portion, an oblique portion joining the upper and intermediate portions, and a lower portion extending forward from the intermediate vertical portion and having in its upper side a slot to receive a rail.

7. The combination of a rail, of rightangle form in cross-section, with a rail holder having in one side a railreceiving slot, of right-angle form in cross-section, which has a horizontally-disposed inner portion and a vertically-disposed mouth and which snugly receives the said rail.
