DRIVING MEANS FOR MOTOR-VEHICLES.
T 0 all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL CHRISTIAN LAS- snN, engineer, citizen of Denmark, residing at 3 Helgolandstrasse, Schmargendorf7 near Berlin, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Driving Means for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention deals with the application of driving-gear to the steeringwheel of a motor-car in which the electroinotor which supplies the driving-power is arranged on the movable supports of the steering-wheel- In three-wheeled motors of this type the proper placing of the motor is a matter of great difficulty. The motor is usually fixed to the front fork of the frame which however means the use of complicated accessory parts which are anything but ornamental, which takc up much space, disturb the balance of the car and make the steering heavy.
rlhe cbj ect of the present invention is designed to remove all these disadvantages, and consists of the arrangement of the electro-motor in the same line as the axis of the steering movement.
The drawing shows one of the possible forms of construction.
Figure 1 is a section through motor, frame and steering-wheel, F ig. 2 a side elevation of the same parts.
(l) is the casing of the motor, the aXis of which is in a line with that of the steeringmovement and passes through the center of the steering-wheel- The front part of the frame is forked, the prongs passing around the motor and supporting it. The two clamping members (9) and (10) hold it in place and are bolted onto the prongs.
At the upper end of the steering-frame (2) Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 28, 1908.
Patented Feb. .22, 1910. Serial No. 418,343.
is the casing of the motor, and to this the hand-bar for steering is rigidly fastened. The motor-shaft is hung on ball bearings above and below in the casing (1) of the motor. At the lower end of the motor shaft is a cog-wheel (12) which engages in another cog-wheel keyed onto the counter shaft 13) parallel to the motor shaft. This shaft 13 carries a bevel-wheel (14) at its lower end which engages in a corresponding bevel-wheel (7) which is fastened to the hollow hub (8) of the steering-wheel The shaft (13) is fitted with a universal joint and consists of parts which can be pushed into one another. The system of bevel-wheels is covered by the casing (6) which is at the same time the bearing for the aXle of the front wheel. Both bearings of the aXle are rigidly connected with the springs (4L) and on which rests the frame These springs also support the U shaped piece 2, which serves at the same time as mud-guard.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A motor vehicle comprising a frame, a steering wheel, a steering frame pivoted in the first mentioned frame and in which the said wheel is journaled, a motor secured to said steering frame, and having its motor shaft coinciding with the axis of the steering frame, and a steering lever secured upon the upper end of the motor.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KARL CHRISTIAN LASSEN.
