j Be it known that we, FERDINAND LYDEN and Hanni* P. Ercan, citizens of the United States, residing at )Wood River, in the` i county of Hall, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Cigar-Cutter, of

which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to cigar clippers and has for its object to provide a device of this character that will. clip the end of a cigar in a l." shape instead of clipping the end square ott' as in the usual style of cigar clippers.

Another object is to provide a device of this character that is simple in construction, has few parts to get out of order and one which will reduce the cost of manufacture to a inininiun'i.

Still another object is to provide a device that will automatically return to operative position after each operation.

lilith these advantages and other objects in view7 which will be described in the accompanying specification, and set forth in the claims, our invention embraces the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through 5i-A of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross section through B-B of Fig. 1.

1t is well known to every smoker that when a cigar end is clipped o square in the usual manner the wrapper is loosened and as soon as the cigar is lighted, the end becomes ragged and will be broken o in small pieces which cause the smoker a great deal of annoyance and detract from the pleasure of his smoke. To overcome this difliculty, we have devised a cigar clipper that will clip the end of the cigar in a V shape, whereby the cigar will not become ragged as soon as lighted and will draw better and provide a cleaner smoke than the ordinary square.

Referring now to the drawings, a casing is shown having a bottom (1) from the opposite longitudinal edges of which rise the vertical side walls (2) and (3) and from the opposite end edges of which rise the vertical end walls (1) and (5). rlhe upper edges of the side and end walls are connected by the top (6). The top has formed therein a longitudinal slot (7) disposed adjacent one side, and an annular opening (S) positioned adjacent one end.

A. channeled block (16) is disposed longitudinally of the casing and is secured to the inner face of the top thereof. The channeled block is substantially rectangular in facial contour and has formed on its lower face a longitudinal recess (17) having vertical sides and an inverted V-shaped top. The guides (18) and (19) are secured 4to the bottom face of the channeled block and are disposed one on either side of the recess (17) and project over the inner edge of the recess a suiiicient distance to form a seat for the cutting member.

The cutting member is made of metal and consists of a rack (20) and a cutting head (21). The rack is substantially rectangular in contour and its teeth mesh with the teeth of the spur gear ('12). One end of the rack terminates in a tongue (22) adapted to secure the cutting head (21) to the rack. The cutting head corresponds in contour to the inverted il-shaped top of the recess (17) formed on the lower face of the channeled block, and is of a size to slidinvly fit said recess. The opposed faces of die vertical sides (23) and (211) of the cutting head are adapted to engage the sides of the tongue (9.2) and are secured thereto by the screw (Q5 The operation of the invention is as follows z--The end of acigar is inserted in the annular opening in the top of the case, projecting through the apex of the V-shaped recess in the guide. The lever is pulled forward as soon as the cigar end is inserted in the opening, thereby causing the shaft and gear wheel to rotate forward. The teeth of the gear engaging the rack cause it and the cutting head secured thereon to travel forward in the grooved support, the cutting head in its travel passing through the projecting end of the cigar and clipping out a V-shaped portion. The lever is now released and the Weighted end causes the shaft and gear to rotate backward and the cutting member engaging the gear to travel back- Ward and resume its normal position.

F rom the foregoing description, taken in connection ivith the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation oil our invention may be easily understood, Without a more extended explanation, it being nnderstood that various changes in the torni, proportion and minor details oit the invention may be made within the scope ot what is claimed., Without sacrilicing any ot the advantages or departing from the spirit ot the invention.

Having thus described ourinvention,what We claim is:-

l. In a cigar cutter, a cutter head having spaced bearing portions, the upper ends oit' which terminate in converging cutting portions, a rack combined with said cutter, a channeled guide adapted to contorni with and to slidingly receive the cutter, a gear adapted to mesh with said rack, and a Weighted operating lever combined with said gear whereby to reciprocate said cutter.

In a cigar cutter, a cutter' head having vertical bearing portions, the upper ends oit' which are bent inward, said bent portions constituting a cutting edge, a rack suitably secured to said cutter, a channeled guide adapted to contorni to thel contour ot the cutting head and to slidingly support said,A

cutting head, a gear disposed adjacent and adapted to mesh with said rack, and an operating' lever combined With said gear, said operating lever having a lateral Weight torined at one end, said Weight being adapted to gravitate and reciprocate said cutter.

5 ln a cigar cutter, a cutter head having sl ng cutting portions` combined With vertical bearing portions, a rack combined with said cutter, a channeled guide adapted to receive the end oit a cigar, a shaft dis posed near said rack, a spur gear secured on said shaft and adapted to engage the teeth ot said rack, and an operating lever adapted to rotate said shaft, said operating lever having a Weighted end adapted to gravitate and return the parts to normal position.
