Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois,
have made a certain new and useful Invention in PayAsYouEnter Cars, of which the following is a e iiication.
This invention tee to pay-as-yon'enter can.
l The object of the invention is to provide the fares or to piifierly rcgixter o'r record them when collect t is also desirable to from street or other assaEe means for facilitatin of passengers to an cars without unduly restricting the ways, and in auch nianner'its to ena le t fares of passengers to be collected as they enter the car.
further object is to provide means for, increasing the seating capacity of the car without increasing its izo or length.
A further object is di provide means for reducing to a minimum thc danger of injur) to passengers iii getting on or oli' the car.
the entrance and exit Other objects of the'inveiition will appear more fully hereinafter.
' 'llic invention eonsists substantially in thc construction. coiiihiniition, loeat ion, and relative arrangement of parte. all as will be niorc i'iilli hereinafter i-iel t'ortli, as v-hovi'ii in the aceuiiipaiiying dranin' and liiiiillv pointed ont iii the appended e ainis.
Referring to the accoinpiinyii'ig drawing. nud to the various viewii und reference :dans appeariirer thereon.--l"igiii'e I is a view iii diagraiiiunilie phiu ofii ear lioilviand ite lloor ripari. honing the applii-ntioii thereto 'of an hrriiogeiiieiit eiiihodyiiig the principles ol' nrvinvcntion. l"i Y. '2 is a .similar view of one 'cnil ol' the car. lifig. il is a rien' in :side elevation. parts broken out and parts broken oil'. Fig. l is a hrolaeu view iii transveieie uectiony on tho line I. l.`l"ig. Fignii isi a view ih icrepeetive of thc construction shown inV iig. l. li'ig. l' iis ii view similar to Fig. L'. showing. a niodiiieatioii within the purview and'ecope of the invention.
The saine part is designated h v the saine reference ign wherever it occurs throughout the several views.
in the matter of haiidlin sti-net and other passenger ear trallie, especially in the larger cities where there is an ever increasing heavy trallic and where, during certain hoursl of the tinyI und under constantly recarrin exigencias, the tratiic becomes congested, it is of the utmost importance to provide menus for facilitating the entrance and exit of. paaeengers to and from the cars to the end that this trame may be handled with expedition. It. is also equally important that the collection of fares from the facilitated, to the end that the compari opl eratinrihe cars may not su'er loes o revenne ugh failure of conductors to collect utilize all the available space for the accommodation of passengers to the end that the L car may have the largest possible carrying capacity.
It is alao desirable to provide ample safeguard against the danger of uijurmg the passengers or others getting on or oti' tlhe cars, or attempting to o sn premature y.
It is yamong the special urposes of in' piment invention to provi e means wliic are simple and etiicient for accomplishing theee various important and desirable objects.
1n carrying out my invention, in one form of embodiment thereof, I gropoae 'to ein loy.
tivo doors at. one side of t c rear end o the ear. said doors being separated by an intervening stationary or lixed panel of the car body l'rnnie, behind which iixed panel the doors, in opening, are designed to slide, one or hoi li ol' the doors being arrun ed to slide in the direction of the length of t ie cai', and, npproxiiiiaicly in tho plane ot' the side of the riir. and. when in ehwed position, serving lo incline the hiep actes-s to which from outside the car is i-oiiirolledhy the doors.
ln the drawing reference sign 7, designate` the lloor space of the car, and in prac tire. though, in this respect. my invention, in ithl broadest eco i, is not to be limited to this feature. this oo'r pace extentie the ctr tire length of the ear from end to end. The door t). are arranged in the side of the ear near ith rear end, andherve, when cloned to inelose. from the outside of the car. the steps ll). Il. respectively, leading tn or from the floor space of the citi'. The doorways are miparated by an intervenin fixed panel lil. of the ear body frame, behind. inside or outside of which, as in y be dired, one or bloth of the door `lite when moved intor tieir o en obition. .t asse r beul. i4, nia beparraiiged against iii@ fig panet'llb, if i esired. It will be obiierved that by t e ment above s entry p'letforrn ntthe. end of the our willi the treneversely arranged doors nt the en trenoe from the platform into the our, und 10 hence em enabled to utilize the entire. length of the cui' from ono extremo eiid to lthe other for the accommodation of passengers, thereby greatly increasing the comfortable trying clpecity of llw mit while ut the 1l seme time insuring protection to the pnt-oengeriiegenet rein, snow or the like.
