Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
'Application filed June 12, 1909. Serial No. 501,824.
To allwhom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FRANCIS JENKINS, a citizen f the United States, rein the District of Cohave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages for Chemicals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the a-rt to which it appertains t0 make and use the same.. This invention relates to packages provided with multiplechambers, and has for its object the production of a package of this nature especially adapted for holding photographic suppliesv or other chemicals; and one that will be cheap to manufacture, simple in cclmdstruction and will be rigid when assemb e To these ends the invention consists in the novel detais of-construct-ion and combination of parts more fully hereinafter delumbia,
l scribed and particularly pointed outrin the rally wound type,
claims. v
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part'of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the viewsz-Figure 1 1s a side of the completed article with certain parts broken away for clearness. FiO. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a sllghtly modified form. Fig. 3- is a view of Athe containers ready to be assembled. Fig. 4 is aview of a spirally wound tube from which the containers are cut.
1 indicates a tube of thewell known spiwhich may be cut by any suitable mechanism into a lurality of pieces along a curved or wabbllng line, thereby forming raised portions2 and sunken portions 3 on the-'pieces thus severed. These pieces are of suitable lengths to form containers 4, and said containers are closed in the 'well known manner at one end by flanged bottom closures 5, as illustrated. When a package is to be formed one of the containers 4 is in addition providedwith a closure 6 whose flanges point in the same direction as the flanges of its correspondin bottom closure 5. The disk portion of sai closure 6 is, however, extended beyondthe edge 7 of its container 4 to form a seat for the abutting edge of the container 4, as best illustrated 1nv Figs. 2 and 3. The open end elevational view .been put up in separate packages.
to say, when a plurality of chemicals to bev edge of one of of the container or vessel 4 slips over the extended disk closure 6, as indicated', and thereby forms a package provided with a plurality of compartments 8 and 9; the compartment 9 being completely closed, andthe compartment 8 being open when the vessel 4 is ywithdrawn from the vessel 4', as indicated in Fig. 3. When placing the two vessels 4 and 4 together, they' are turned on their axes, so that `the raised portions 2 of each vessel abut., as best illustrated in Figs. l and 2, while the sunken portion 3 of each vessel come opposite each other to form vacant spaces 11. Over the meeting edges of the vessels 4 and 4 is, 'or may be, secured a suitable short label, such as l2 in Fig. 1, or a longer label may be extended the entire length of the article, as shown at 13 in Fig. 2. When it is desired to use the contents of the vessels, it is only necessary to break the label around the circumference of the'package, as by inserting a pin, the thumb nail, or a knife bladeinto the vacant spaces l1 and cutting the label; or the package may be ltaken inthe hands and twisted'on its axis nbopposite directions, thereby breaking the Heretofore photographic `chemicals have That is mixed have been heretofore wrap ed separately and placed in one receptac e, oftentimes the chemicals have become mixed and their usefulness thereby destroyed. In the 'package above described, however, these 0bjections are eliminated because each container constitutes in effect a separate package, which precludes all liability to accidental mixing of the chemicals.
What I claim is:-
1. A package comprising a plurality, of tubular sections provided with abutting meeting edges, one ofwhich has a projecting portion against which the other edge contacts, thereby providing between said edges, when in their assembled relation, a.
space 11; and a label covering the said edges tially as described.
2. A package comprising a plurality' of tubular sections havin butting edges;` closures Yfor the individua sections the meeting the said sections havin a proetween )ection adapted to provide a space yand holding said sections together, substansaid edges when in their' assembled relation; and a sealing strip overlying said edges to' hold said sections together, substantially as described.
3. A package comprising a lurality of tubular sections having irregu ar meeting edges; said edges adapted when assembled to form spaces therebetween; and a label .covering said edges and holding said sections in their assembled relation, substantially as described. i
4. A package comprising a tube having a closure at each end and` one end of which is provided with an uneven edge; a second tube closed at one end and provided at its other end with an uneven edge adapted to abut said first named edge; said uneven edges of the two tubes adapted to be held in an abutl ting relation providing spaces between said edges; and a label adapted to secure the said tubes in their abutting relation, substan tially as described.v
5. A package comprising a spirally wound tubular section having at one end a flanged closure and provided at its other end with an uneven edge; a second spirally wound tubular section having at one end a flanged closure land provided at' its other end with an uneven ed e and also with a flanged disk closure, the isk of which extends beyond said latter uneven edge to form a seat for said first mentioned edge; the said uneven edges being so abutted as to provide spaces therebetween; and a label overlying saidv edges and adapted to secure the said sections 3 in their assembled relation, substantially as described.
6. -In a package the combination of a tube having at one end a flanged closure provided at its other end -with an uneven edge; a sec- 4 ond tube closed at each end by a flanged disk closure, the flanges of which point in the same direction and the disk of one ofV which extends beyond the end of the said tube to form a seat for the said uneven edge; one of V4 the ends of the said second tube being also provided with an uneven edge adapted tosc abut said first mentioned edge as to provide spaces between the same; and a label ada ted to secure said sections in their assembled relation, substantially as described.
7. A package comprising an open ended tubular receptacle provided with a bottom closure; and a second tubular receptacle also provided' with a bottom closure and an un- 5 even edge adapted' to abut said first recep' tacle and havino a flanged disk top closure, the disk of which extends beyond the top edge of said second receptacle to form a seat' for the open end of sald first mentioned receptacle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature; in presence of two witnesses.
