To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jesse B. Gaiman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county ot Columbiana and State ot Ohio, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Iumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled .in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
ivly invention relates to pumps, and more particularly stated to that class of pumps which are designed, arranged and adapted for pumping both air and water into a storage tank or reservoir, from whence the water may be distributed, under pressure throughout the pipes and connections oit a water service system.
Among its objects my invention contemplates the production of pumps of the character stated, which are at once simple in construction, responsive in action, economical in point of power required, and ot' greater geiieral etliciency than those heretofore employed for similar purposes.
The present invention will be hereinafter particularly described and pointed out in the claims following.
In the accompanying drawings which it'orm part of this application, and whcreon corresponding reference characters indicate like parts in the several views: Figure l represents in side elevation my invention with lower pumping cylinder attached, the latter broken away exposing the lower end of a piston rod, piston, and in side elevation the foot valve. Reference being had to the drawings, it
will be apparent that the leading features of l my present invention are contained within what may be termed a mixing cylinder, as distinguished from the pumping-cylinder located below, the latter being ot' any well known construction and forming no part ot this invention per se. It will be noted also that no particular means for reciprocating the piston rod are shown, ttor the reason that any well known reciprocating mechanism may here be employed.

rl`he mixing apparatus, which is preterably o'f cylindrical form, may or may not be provided with a brass or other lining, and is formed oit' upper and lower sections A1, 2 respectively, the adjacent ends whereof are connected by a coupling I3 in screw threaded relation. Extending longitudinally through center oi the mixing apparatusl aforesaid is a piston rod 8 adapted to be reciprocatcd in any approved manner and to control the action ot an ordinary pumpingcylinder S) below. To said piston-rod is secured a plunger mechanism comprising a cage l0 threaded upon said rod below the rod coupling l1, a tubular plunger l2 depending trom said cage and passing loosely through a central aperture 13 in the coupling 3 aforesaid, an annular 'follower 14 threaded upon the exterior sur't'ace o'll plunger tube 1l adjacent to its point ol connection with cage l0, a cup packing '1.5 securely held between the plunger' -follower lil and the lower edge oit cage 1() its free edge bearing upon the interior of the upper cylinder section l or the lining thereof, and linalt' a similar but 0ppositely arranged cup packing lo securely held between the upper end ol cylinder scction 2 and the coupling 3. It will be noted that the 'tree edge or inner periphery ol the last. named packing is arranged to surround and snugly engage the outer circumtcrcnce ot the plunger tube '12 and is beveled as shown to 'Facilitate a sel't packing action under the upward j'n'essure ot a column of water within the cylindrical section 2. Entering at one side ot the coupling 3 is an air inlct port Q0 Vwhich may be tapped as shown to receive a regulating cock (not shown). Intersecting this port Q() is a vertically arranged air passage 2.1 communicating with an enlarged scat QQ for a ball valve Q3 and opening directly into the annular mixing chamber 17 surrounding the plunger tube 12 beneath its follower 14, as shown by Fig. 2.
Screwed into the lower coupling 5 is the tubular pumping cylinder 9 of any approved diameter, length and capacity, or as is frequently necessary in deep wells said cylinder may be more or less extended by the interposition of a tubular connect-ion or pipe (not shown), but in any event containing the usual pumping piston 24 secured to and movingl with the piston rod 8, and also the usual foot valve 25 as shown by Fig. 1.
i rIhis being a description of my present invention in one form of construction, it will be noted that various changes in the matter of materials employed, the form, arrangement and construction of parts may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, the operation, however, remaining substantially the same, and being as follows: An upstrole of the piston rod S from its lowermost position as indicated by Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, in addition to elevating water by agency of a partially submerged pumping cylinder 9 in the usual manner, carries with it the cage 10, cup packing 15, follower 14 and tube 12, thus tending to produce a partial vacuum in the annular mixing chamber 17 beneath said follower. As the plunger mechanism ascends, air rushes into said chamber 17 via the air inlet port 2O and ball valve 23, the ordinary pumping mechanism in the meantime inducing an upward flow of water into the cylinder section 2 and through plunger tube 12. Near the top of each stroke, as the port 19 passes above the cup packing 16, water escapes from within tube 12 to the mixing chamber 17 until pressure is equal in both, whereupon with each downstroke of the plunger mechanism said mix ture of water and air from chamber 17 is forced past the circumferentially yielding upper edge of packingl into the stream Howino` through tube 12 and is thence delivered to its place of utilization, as for ex ample, a storage and pressure reservoir.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with means for inducing a flow of water therethrough, of a mixing chamber, an air inlet to said chamber, a reciprocating air pumping plunger, a tube depending from said plunger, and a port in said tube adapted to deliver water into the mixing chamber following each charge of air thereto, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with means for inducing a iow of water therethrough, of a mixing chamber, an air inlet to said chamber, a check valve guarding said inlet, a reciprocating piston rod, an air pumping plunger carried by said rod, a tube depending from said plunger, and a port in said tube adapted to deliver water into the mixing chamber following each charge of air thereto, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with means for inducing a flow of water therethrough, of a mixing chamber, an air inlet to said chamber, a reciprocating piston rod, an air pumping plunger carried by said rod, an open ended tube passing through said plunger, and a port in the depending portion of said tube adapted to deliver water into the mixing chamber periodically, substantially as described.
4. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with means for inducing a flow of water therethrough, of a mixing chamber, an air inlet to said chamber, a reciprocating piston rod, a cage carried by said rod, a plunger secured to said cage, a tube depending from said plunger, and a port in said tube adapted to deliver water into the mixing chamber following each charge of air thereto, substantially as described.
5. In an apparatus of the character described the combination with a pump for inducing a ow of water therethrough, of a mixing chamber, an air inlet to said chamber, a reciprocating air pumping plunger, a tube depending from said plunger, and a port in said tube adapted to deliver water into the Vmixing chamber following each charge of air thereto, substantially as described.
