To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Holder Attachments for Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in match holder attachments for lanterns, and has for its object to provide an attachment of this class, mounted upon the oil cup of the lantern, so that the matches will always be within convenient reach when it is desired to light the same.

Another object is to provide a match receptacle, the cover of which is automatically opened when the chimney of the lantern is raised.

A further object is to provide means whereby the cover to the match receptacle will be securely closed when the chimney and holder therefor are forced down after the lantern has been lighted.

\Vith these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being umlerstood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern showing my improved attachment secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the chimney shown in raised position and the lid of the match receptacle open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section through the match receptacle and the lower portion of the lantern.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a lantern of any ordinary or approved construction, and 2 a chimney vertically movable in the lantern frame. A suitable holder 3 is also employed for returning the lamp chimney to its proper position.

4 indicates the oil cup of the lantern, on which is mounted the match receptacle 5, which is provided with the hinged cover 6. The front edge of the cover 6 is bent downwardly as shown at 7 and is adapted to contact with the arm 8 carried by the chimney holder 3. The arm 8 may be conveniently made of a wire loop the ends of which are each secured to the chimney holder 3. Suitable coiled springs 9 are formed upon either end of a length of spring steel wire, the intermediate portion being secured to the top of the cover (5 by means of a staple or other suitable securing means 10. The extremities of the springs 9 are secured to the rear face of the match receptacle 5, and the tension of the same is such that they will tend to open the cover 6 upon the raising of the chimney 2. Upon the rear edge of the cover (5 at either end thereof the angular extensions 11 are provided, and form stops to limit the upper movement of the cover. A suitable arm 3 is pivoted to the side bar of the frame and is connected to the chimney holder, whereby the same is raised and lowered. It will be seen from reference to the drawings that when the cover 6 is in open position, the arm 8 will bear upon the outer curved edge thereof, and when the chimney is again lowered will force said cover into a closed position. By providing the curved edge upon the cover 5, all danger of the same catching upon the under side of the arm 8 and interfering with the proper operation of the device is avoided.

From the foregoing it will be noted that as the chimney 3 is raised the cover of the match receptacle will automatically open by means of the coiled springs 9, so that ready access may be had thereto, so that the lantern may be quickly lighted and the chimney again adjusted to its proper position. Considerable annoyance is thus avoided as the matches are always conveniently at hand, whereby nmch time is saved. It will be understood that if desired the match receptacle may form a part of the lantern frame, but the device would preferably be constructed as shown in the drawings, so that the same may be readily detached if desired.

The device is very simple and inexpensive in construction, and highly durable and cilicient. It is also entirely automatic in operation and being small in proportions will form no hindrance when it is desired to light the lantern. The cover is securely held in closed position when the lantern is lighted, all danger of the matches contained within the receptacle becoming ignited being avoided, thus producing an attachment which is in every way practical and at the same time highly useful and desirable.

What is claimed is:

1. An attachment of the character described, comprising a match receptacle mounted upon the oil cup of a lantern, a chimney vertically movable in the lantern frame, a hinged cover for said receptacle, means carried by said chimney to close said cover and means secured to the receptacle for opening said cover When the chimney is raised.

2. An attachment of the character described, comprising a match receptacle mounted upon the oil cup of a lantern, a chimney and holder therefor vertically movable in the lantern frame, a hinged cover for said receptacle, an arm carried by said chimney holder adapted to close said cover, and means secured to the receptacle and the cover for opening said cover When the chimney is raised.

An attachment of the character described, comprising a match receptacle mounted upon the oil cup of a lantern, a chimney and holder therefor vertically movable in the lantern frame, a hinged cover for said receptacle having its front edge downwardly disposed, an arm carried by said chimney holder adapted to close said cover, springs adapted to open said cover When the chimney is raised, and'means for limiting the movement of said cover.

4. An attachment of the character described, comprising v a match receptacle mounted upon the oil cup of a lantern, a chimney and holder therefor vertically movable in the lantern frame, a hinged cover for said receptacle, an arm carried by said chimney holder adapted to close said cover, coiled springs secured to the rear of said receptacle and to said cover, and adapted to open said cover When the chimney is raised and angular extensions upon the rear edge of said cover to limit the movement thereof.
