To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WALTER H. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheshire, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Incandescent- Lamp Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-- Figure 1 a side view of an incandescent lamp socket constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of the same on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 a sectional view of the switch-shaft showing the tumbler mounted thereon. Fig. 4 a top or plan view of the inner face of the lower part and showing the switch-shaft 1n osition. Fig. 5 a plan View of the inner ace of the upper part. This invention relates to an improvement in incandescent-lamp sockets, the object being to provide a simple, cheap, convenient, durable and effective device complying with all the usual requirements in devices of this character.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the construction to be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, the insulator block within which the mechanism is mounted, is formed in two parts which I will term .the upper part 2 and the lower part 3. These are formed from porcelain or other suitable insulating material. In the upper part 2 is a T-shaped recess or chamber 4. adapted in form to receive a T-shaped tumbler-operating spring having arms 5 and 6, the former terminating in a T or cross-piece 7 which constantly presses down upon the tumbler 24 which it throws, so to s eak, into its respective positions. In the ace of the upper part 2 at each end of its chamber 4 are semicircular notchcs 8 and 9 for the reception and bearing of the switch-shaft 21. The lower part 3 has a chamber 10 having a central opening 11 for the reception of a rivet 12 employed to permanently secure the contact-arm 13 in the said chamber 10. This chamber has an offset 14 for the reception of the arm 15 of a contact-spring 16 which extends over the contact-arm 13 aforesaid. In the face of the lower part 3 is a semicircular recess 17 llanked on either side by notches 18, 19, corresponding to the notches 8 and 9 before mentioned, and forming therewith bearings for the switch-shaft 21 which has in the part 3 an additional bearin notch 20. This switch-shaft 21 has a hand e 1-4 and is held against longitudinal movement by lugs coacting with a washer'23 carried by the shaft and bearing against the outer wall of the recess 17 in the lower part 3. Mounted on the shaft 21 at a point between the arm 7 of the tumbler-operating spring and the contact-spring 16, is a tumbler 24 held in position on the shaft by cars 25 thereon, and by the adjacent walls of the chambers at and 10 in the upper and lower parts 2 and 3.
In the outer surface of the lower part 3 are recesses 26 and 27 to receive the usual binding devices 28 and 31 for the attachment of the wires which are not shown, and registering with these recesses 26 and 27 and in the upper part 2 are suitable recesses 15, 16, for the passage of the said wires to said binding devices. The binding device 28 is secured in the part 3 by a screw 29 which extends throu h the part and is employed for making 0 ectric connection with the shell 30. The binding device 31 is secured in place in the part 3 by a screw 47 which is embedded in the said part 3 and has its head protected by scaling/18 from contact with the shell 30. The said screw 47 passes through the binding device 31 and the contact-spring 15 and holds them together and in proper position in the lower.

As herein shown the rivet 12 by which the arm 13 is secured in place, has its shank drilled as at 32 so that it may be readily upset over the arm 13 which it secures in place. Preferably and also as shown, the binding devices 28 and 31 will be part 3. The central part of the shell 30 is 1 er ses formed with cars 33, 34:, which assist in holding the wires more securely in place.
Instead of recessing the'upper and lower parts 2 and 3 of the block so that the tumbler 2 on the switch-shaft 21 will be arranged at recess 38 to receive a'T-shaped tumbleroperating 'sprin 39 the outer end 4 0 of which Wlll. be in ine with the contact-spring 36. The tumbler 41 on the switch-shaft 21 will be'in line with these two s rings 36 and 39 so as to make and break t e circuit bea tween them. In both constructions shown and described herein, the parts are secured together by screws 42 and 43 entering nuts 48 and 4:9, embedded inthe 11 per part 2.

In an incandescent lamp socket, the combination with a sectional block having recessed upper and lower parts, the upper part having a T-shaped recess, of a T-shaped tumbler-operating spring located in the said T-shaped recess in the upper part, a contact spring located in the recess in the lower part, a switch shaft having'bearing in registering notches in the abutting faces of the said parts, a tumbler mounted on the said shaft and coacting with the said "3" shaped tumbler-operating spring on the one hand and with the contact spring on the other hand, a washer mounte on the shaft and with one of the said parts to hold thesai shaft against longitudinal. movement, and binding devices located in recesses in the exterior surface oi the said lower part and connected with the contactspring therein.
