JACOB BLESER. OF SIERINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
ACETYLENE-GAS-GENERATING L AMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15; 1,910.
Application tiled November 21, 1908, Serial No. 1163.922.
ATo all whom. it 'nm/y concer/V:
Be it known thatl, J'xcon Brausen, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Spring ticld, .in the county ot' Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ri,cetyleneGtts-Geuerating Lamps, ot' which `the 'following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use my said invention.
My 'invention relates to an acetylene gas generating lamp, such as are used by miners, prospectors, hunters, etc., giving a much brighter, cheaper and cleaner light than oil.
.The purposes ot this invention are to provide a valve body of improved construction, to provide a valve stein easily removable for the purpose of cleaning the valve, to provide means :tor connecting the feed-tube with the valve-body, to provide means `tor cleaning the feed-tube without detaching the valve or the 'valve stem; to provide a screen of improved construction and vto provide means to prevent the escape ot? water .t rom the res ervoir.
lV ith these ends in view .my invention consists in the novel features ot' construction and combinations ot.' parts shown in the annexed drawing to which reference is hereby made, and hereinafter particularly described and finally recited in the claim.
In the drawings Figure l is a side view ot' the complete lamp and Fig. 2 is a vertical axial section through the lamp.
The main structure of the lamp comprises a water reservoir l having a downwardly extending part 1c and a carbid nox 2 having an upwardly extending neck 2 screwing;r into the downwardly extending screw-threaded part l of the water reservoir substantially as shown. A gasket 16 between the members 2 and lc vforms a gas-tight connection between the reservoir l and the box 2. The reservoir 1 has in its upper part an openingl l" of suitable site to permit easy insertion or removal of the valve stem G, and also has a diaphragm lb forming` the bottom ot the chamber containing' the Water. A removable cap l" covers an opening 1d through which water is pmu-ed into the reservoir. In the center yol'wthc diaphragm ll is a hole l" in i which the valve body 3 tits tightly. The valve body 3 has internal threads 3, open ings 3, a central chamber 8", a tapered valve seat 3", at the bottom ot'4 the chamber ob, a
downwardly extending' reduced screw threaded member S) and a central vertical hole il" in which the needle Yt3 fits loosely. The feed tube /thas a central bore et" in which the needle 'i3 tits loosely and has at its upper end a screw-threaded part li. A coupling l() screws onto the member 9 of the valve body and the screw ith ot' the tube ft and connects the tube with 'the valve body. The valve stem ti has a central bore 6b, a scrcw-tln'eaded part tic screwing into the screw 3 ot the valve body, a reduced part (5 within the chamber 3b of the valve body and having its lower end G" tapered to fit on the valve seat 3; and has at its upper end a lmnrled handle 6 by which the valve stem may be turned to screw it into the valve body, or to nnscrcw it from the valve body. The washer .l2 tits around the valve stem and covers the opening la. A coiled spring 1l surrounds the valve stem between the handle (3 and the washer l2 and acts to hold the washer firmly over the opening l, so as to prevent the escape oi water through the opening'. The needle 13 tits loosely within the bores of the valve stem, the valve body and the tced tube and has at its upper end a lmob 13" for convenient handling of the needle. A screen 1l of wire cloth, tits on and extends entirely around the lower tapered part ot' the valve bod)r and extends entirely across that part of the reservoir which is below the diaphragm l, so as to torni a gas chan'iber 8 above the screen, and the screen prevents ashes and dust :trom entering the gas chamber. The lamp has a burner l5 in cominunication with the gas chamber 8. The burner may be ot' any approved construction.
vhen the parts are assembled and the valve-sle1n screwed down so lthat its tapered lower end ti rests on the tapered seat .'"r and water is supplied within the reservoir and carbid is supplied within the box, the water will tlow through the openings 3n into the chamber 3h, and upon unscrewing the valve stein to the necessary extentv water will flow downward along the needle 13 and through the tube tand will be applied within the carbid mass, in an obvious manner.
if the tube becomes clogged the valve stem b may be screwed down to close the valve and the needle 13 may then be slid upward and do\\'n\vard to clean the tube it and re move any obstruction at the end thereof. lVhen that is done the valve may be opened lll) ` to the desired extent to permit the water to again flow downward along the needle and through the tube. in case the valve seat becomes clogged the water will be poured out from the reservoir and the valve stem will be unscrewed from the valve body and withdrawn through the opening l and the valve seat may then be properly cleaned or ground and the valve stem may then be replaced. y
It will be Seen that the needle may be easily moved without disturbing any of the other parts and that the spring 1l adds to keep the washer 12 in place over the opening' lzL when the valve is opened as well as when it is closed.- Having fully described my invention,
\ what I 'claim' as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
I The combination ot a carbid box; a water reservoir connectible with the carbid box and having a diaphragm; a valve body i central bore, also having a downwardly eX tendingl member provided with a tapered fixed centrall on the-'diaphragm of the resend fitting on the tapered valve-seat of the valve body; and a needle extending'through the Valve-stein, the valve-body'and the feedtube.
In witness, whereof I have hereunto subscribed niy name at Springfield, Ill., this 20th day of September, v1908. I
JACOB BLESER..
