y iatwtffm. Meeste-MW We Letters Patent No. 94,924, (lated September 14, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE NEEDLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari: ofthe same.
vTo all whom Iit may concerny Be it known that LHANNAH G. SUPLEE, of Sau Francisco, in the county of Sau Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and improved Sewing-Machine Needle; 'and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference heilig had to'the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of' reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in constructing the eye ofthe needle with a double inverted V-shaped slot, to form the necessary joint, through which the thread maybe drawn, withoutthe necessity' of inserting the end of the thread through the eye, as in the usual way.
I u the drawings- Figure l is a section; and
Figures 2 and 3 are enlarged views of a sewingmachine needle, having my improvements.
To enable others skilled in the artto make and use struction and operation.
A represents the slot or opening, which in form resembles au inverted double V, which is cut obliquely through one side ofthe eye of the needle, about midway with the points or inner vertex, rounded so that no acute angles will appear, to cuttlie cloth when it is passing through.
At the side of the eyeof the needle, immediately below the slot, is a projection, b,which extends alittle my invention, l will proceed to describe fully its coubeyoud the part of the eye above the slot, so that as theneedle enters the fabric, the part or point o of the upper part of the slot will not engageor catch the cloth.
Also, the needle is withdrawn from the stitch without lifting the fabric, or any perceptible difference in its operation from that ofthe ordinary needle, yet the perforatious of my needle in the cloth will be a littlel larger, but will not prevent the finest stitch from lieing made.
The slot is made obliquely', to more elfectually prevent the thread from being carried out of the eye in its operation.
The upper lip or point ofthe slot may extend nearer theshoulders or lower lip of the slot, according to the size ofthe needle and the thread employed.
Thus itlwill be clearly seen that my needle may be threaded by persons having poor eyesight, or even in thc dark, by simply taking the thread between the fingers of both hands, and raising it up to'. the depression of the slot, and carrying it over the centre or inner point, and down the oppositeiucline or radii to the eye of the needle.
Having thus described my invention,
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described needle for sewing-machines, having a slot or opening, A, ionl the eye, with points o (l and projection b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
HANNAH G. SUPLEE. [L s] Witnesses:
( W.M. SMITH, S. Tiener.
