SIGN-LETTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed August 16, 1909. Serial No. 513,049.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known thatI, JOHN MRAZEK, a citizen of the United States residing at Chi cago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sign-Letters, of which the ollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sign letters, the main object of the invention being to provide suitable means for securing transparent ornamental inlays in a letter of this character.
A further object of my invention is to i provide adequate means for protecting the inlays from the weather when the same are silvered to form mirrors thereof.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully'described and more particularly pointed out in'the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part 6f this specification,
'and in which,
Fi re 1 is a front elevation of my improved sign letter, showing the same attached to a sign board, Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the letter and one of the'ornamental inlays secured'therein, Fig. 3 1s a section similar to Fig. 2 but showing an inlay in elevation, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section showing a recess or depression in which an inlay is secured.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates a sign board and 2 a letter of my improved construction attached thereto. Formed in the letter 2 are a plurality of hemispherical recesses or cavities 3 as shown in Flg. 4. Substantially hemispherical transparent ornamental inlays 5 are pro- .vided, the same having preferably a series of facets 6 cut on the curved portions there-, of. These facets are silvered in order that each inlay may produce a brilliant effect by reflecting light.-
In order to secure each inlay 5 in its re cess 3, the recess is first partially filled with 60 cement 7 'in a plastic condition, then the inlay is forced therein until it becomes on a level with the surface of the letter. The
secured therein.
cement is smoothed ofi' flush with the sur face of'the inlay and the letter, and when the same becomes set the inlay is rigidly Owing to the adherence of the cement 7 to the silvered portion 8, the latter will not be affected by the weather, consequently the facets will always'reflect light perfectly and present a brilliant and dazzling appearance.
The letters are formed preferably of wood butany other material which the cementwill readily adhere to may be employed. The inlays may be colored lass, cut crystal, or other like substances. W sired to produce a color effect the letters may be colored or tinted, and the inlays be formed of colored glass to match the color of the letter. .The facets of the inlaysare preferabl cut or ground but may be molded in the size an the design of the facets may be varied to suit the taste or any particular design of letter.
Various changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without de arting from my invention, and hence I db not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the a pended claims.
Having describe my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. A sign letter comprising a body having recesses therein and, a transparent inlay havass, it being understood that the here it is deing mirrored facets on its inner surface, the
sald inlay being embedded in and having its mirrored facets completely covered by ce-' ment, substantially as described.
2. A'sign letter having a series of hemispherical recesses formed therein, a layer of cement in each of said depressions, and a substantially hemispherical transparent inlay having facets formed on its substantially curved surface secured in each recess, thefacets being silvered to form mirrors of said inlays, substantially as described.
3, A wood sign letter having a plurality of hemispherical recesses formed therein, a layerof cement in each recess, a substantially hemispherical transparent inlay secured in the cemen t of each rece surface of each inlay, said vered and adjacen each recess, substan t the layer 0 ss, the layer f a-unlform ut 1n curved.
facets being sil f cement in i tially as described. 1 In testimony whereof I have signed my 1- na1ne to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
