POLISHING DEVICE.
following is a specifica-tion, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means or devices for polishing knives and forks; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and by means of which both knives and forks may be quickly and easily polished; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a polishing device of the class specified `constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a sectional side view of my improved polishing device, Fig. 2 a plan view thereof, F ig. 3 a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, andg-Fig. t a View similar to Fig. l, but showing only one end portion of the device and a modification thereof.
My improved polishing device comprises a base member a and a top member Z) which is pivoted on the base member at c and adapted to oscillate thereon. One end of the base member a is pan-shaped in form as shown at c2, and the other end comprises a raised horizontal table portion as having a downwardly directed end member at, and the end c7 of the pan member a2 opposite the end a4 of the part a3 is curved outwardly and downwardly as shown at a5, and the side walls o@ of the pan member a2 are higher than the end portions c? and as thereof, and the sides of the raised table portion a3 are also provided with raised side anges a which are continuous with the side walls a of the pan member a? and preferably less in height than said side walls.

directed side flanges b5 which fit within the side walls a of the pan member c2 as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and the front end of the box member b2 is open as shown at o and provided with a downwardly, forwardly and upwardly curved plate 297.
A flexible cushioned polisher Z composed of leather, cloth or any othersuitable material is connected with the bottom of the plate l by means of hooks Z2 connected with said polisher and adapted to engage the front and back edges of said plate, or this connection may be made in any desired manner. Another flexible polisher c consisting of a strip of leather, cloth or any other suitable material is placed on the top of the raised table portion a3 of the bottom member c, and the rear end thereof is de tachably secured in the front end of the pan member a2 by means of hooks or other devices as shown at e2, and the front end thereof is detachably connected with the bottom of the downwardly directed part at of the table member a3 by means of hooks or other devices as shown at e3.
The rear end portion of the horizontal part b3 of the top member l) is provided with a transverse downwardly curved portion 58 which corresponds with the part c5, and said parts a5 and bs form inter-operating polishing jaws, and the part o7 of the top part b forms a similar polishing jaw which operates in connection with the front end portion of the table member a3 of the bottom part a.
A' flexible polishing strip or sheet f similar to the polishing strips or sheets Z and c is placed on and detachably connected with the polishing jaw a5, one. end thereof being secured in the rear end portion of the pan member a2 by means of hooks or other devices as shown at f2 the other end portion thereof being connected with the outer transverse edge of the jaw member a5 by hooks or similar devices as shown at f3. The horizontal back portion b3 of the top member b of the polishing device is also provided with a bottom flexible polishing strip or sheet g one end of which extends upwardly into the boX member b2 and is detachably connected with the rear wall thereof by means of hooks or similar devices g2, and the rear end thereof is folded over the jaw bs and detachably secured to the rear part b3 of the top member b of the device by hooks or other devices as shown at g3, and the polishing strip or sheet g is preferably made of two or more thicknesses and is slitted longiw tudinally as shown at g4 in Figs. 2 and 3 so as to divide said polishing strip or sheet into longitudinal parts or members gf.
In practice, a suitable polishing powder 7i is placed in the pan member c2 and a block z' of sapolio or any other suitable or preferred scouring material is placed in the box member b2 and rests on the polishing strip or sheet e.
In Fig. l of the accompanying drawing I have indicated at the handle of a knife, and in polishing the blade of a knife the said blade is inserted, as shown in Fig. 1, between the polishing jaws o7 and the front art of the raised table member a3 which orms a counter jaw, and the front end or box member b2 of the top part I) of the device together with the block z' of polishing material is forced downwardly and the blade of a knife moved back and forth beneath the block z' and between the polishing` jaw b? and the front part of the raised table member a3, and in this operation the knife is turned over so that both sides thereof will come in contact with the block z' and with the polishing strips or sheets cl and e as will be readily understood. I have also shown at m2 and w3 in Fig. l the tines and shank of a fork, and in polishing the fork, the tines and shank thereof are inserted between the jaws a5 and b3 and into the polishing powder 7L and the fork is moved back and forth so that the shank and tines will be polished by the jaws a5 and bs on the opposite sides thereof, and in this operation the handle of the fork may be depressed and the tines m2 raised so that they will pass through the polishing strip, sheet or device g as clearly shown in dotted lines in F ig. l, and the adjacent faces of the tines of the fork will be polished as will be readily understood. In the operation of polishing the knife, the front end or box member b2 of the top part Z) of the device is depressed together with the block z' as hereinbefore described, and in polishing the fork the rear -end of the top part I) is depressed as will be understood.
In Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawing I have shown a modification of the front part of the top portion b of the device. In this modification I place in the box member b2 a supplemental box j adapted to receive a polishing powder y', and in the construction shown the bottom of the box j is provided with apertures ja, and placed in the front portion of the box y' is a slide member 7c having a bottom 7a2 adapted to cover the apertures js, and the slide member 7c is provided with a pin 7c3 which passes forwardly through the opening in the boX member Z22, and mounted on said pin is a spiral spring /64 one end of which is secured to the slide member /c and the other to the front- Wall of Y the box y', and by pressing on the outer end of the pin 7c3 the slide member r; will be moved backwardly or inwardly and the apertures in the bottom of the box y' will be opened and the powder jg in said box will fail through said apertures onto the polishing strip or sheet e, and by means of this construction I am enabled to use a polishing powder jg as a substitute for the block z' of polishing material.
It will be understood that the sheets or strips d, c, f and g which form the polishing surfaces of the different polishing jaws b?, e, a and 79S form polishing pads, and these pads may be composed of leather, cloth or any suitable fibrous material.
By pivoting the top part b of my improved polishing device at c, the said top part is rendered capable of the oscillatory or vibratory movement hereinbefore referred to,'but my invention is not limited to the exact form of construction herein shown and described for accomplishing this result and various changes in and modifications thereof together with similar changes and modifications in the other parts of the device as herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims without departing from theV spiritl of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A polishing' device of the class described comprising base and top members, one end of the base member being provided with a pan or receptacle at the outer end of which is a raised polishing jaw, the other end of the base member being provided with a longitudinal raised portion forming an elongated polishing jaw, the top member being adapted to oscillate in a vertical plane and the end portions thereof being provided with polish? ing jaws which correspond with and co-act with the polishing jaws of the base member, and the end of the top portion over the elongated polishing jaw of the base member being also provided with means for holding the polishing substance.
2. A polishing device of the class described comprising base and top members, the top member being adapted to oscillate in a vertical plane, said base member being provided at both ends with polishing jaws one of which is elongated, and the top portion being provided at both ends with polishing jaws, the base member being also provided at one end with a pan or receptacle adapted to hold the polishing powder, and the top member being provided at the opposite end with a box-shaped receptacle open at the top and bottom and adapted to receive a polishing material.
3. Apolishing device of the class described comprising base and top members, the top member being adapted to oscillate in a vertcal plane, said base member being provided at both ends with polishing jaws one of which is elongated, and the top portion be ing provided at both ends with polishing jaws, the base member being also provided at one end with a pan or receptacle adapted to hold the polishing powder, and the top member being provided at the opposite end with a box-shaped receptacle open at the top and bottom and adapted to receive a polishing material, all the polishing aws of the device being provided on their operating faces with detachable flexible fibrous sheets forming pads.
4. A polishing device of the class described comprising a bottom member and a top member, said top member being adapted to oscillate in a vertical plane, and both of said members being provided at their opposite ends with polishing jaws having detachable polishing pads, the bottom member being provided in one end portion thereof with a receptacle and the opposite end portion thereof being raised to form the jaw of said member at said end, said jaw being elongated, and the top member being provided over said jaw with means for holding a polishing material.
5. A polishing device of the class described comprising top and bottom members, the top member being adapted to oscillate longitudinally in a vertical plane, said'members being provided at both ends with polishing jaws, and the bottom member being provided in one end portion thereof with a pan or receptacle, the top member over said pan or receptacle being provided with an opening below which is a flexible polishing pad device which is slitted longitudinally.
