To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT B. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Madison, State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to pen holders and more particularly to thatclass which are so constructed that the pen held thereby may be readily ejected when it becomes useless.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a pen holder of this class which may be manufactured at an extremely low cost and sold for a small sum, this object being attained through simplification of construction.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the pen holder embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough, the ej ecting device being shown in normal position in full lines and in ej ecting position in dotted lines, and, Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the ejectingdevice removed from the holder.

In the drawings, the staff of the holder is indicated by the numeral 5 and the usual sleeve which is fitted upon the staff, by the numeral G, the said sleeve being formed with a slot 7 the function of which will be presently made clear. Vithin the sleeve 6 there is arranged the usual split pen gripping member 8. The ejecting device is in the form of a pin 9 which is slidably received in the said sleeve of the holder and which is formed with an undercut portion.

The pin 9 is preferably of the same diameter through its body as the interior diameter of the sleeve and secured through the sleeve and extending transversely thereof is a pin 12 which is received in the undercut of the pin 9, it being understood that the sliding movement of the ejecting pin 9 in the direc tion of the extremity of the sleeve is limited by the contacting of the shoulder 11 with the transverse pin l2, the movement of the ejecting pin in the opposite direction being limited by the lower extremity of the pen holder staff 5. The pin 9 being of the same diameter as the interior diameter of the Specification of Letters Patent.

sleeve prevents the ink from working up into the portion of the penholder behind the pin and clogging and rusting the mechanism hereinafter described as therein contained.

In order that the pin 9 may be slid in the direction of the extremity of the sleeve in which it slides, there is formed or fixed upon the said pin a finger stud 18 which projects through the slot in the sleeve and is formed with a head 14 with which the finger nail may be engaged.

In use, the pen is inserted into the sleeve so that its butt end abuts against the finger stud 13 and when it is desired to eject the pen from the holder, the ejecting pin is slid in the direction of the extremity of the sleeve, the stud forcing the pen from engagement in the sleeve.

Vhat is claimed is:

l. A device of the class described com prising a staff, a sleeve fitted upon the staff, the said sleeve being formedwith a slot extending longitudinally of the top, an ejecting pin slidably received in the said sleeve and having an undercut arranged to form a transverse shoulder, a stop pin held in said sleeve and extending from side to side thereof for limiting the movement of the ejecting pin in one direction, and extending into the undercut of the ej ecting pin beneath the shoulder thereof when the ej ecting pin is in its forward position, a spring connected to the ejecting pin and staff for returning the ejecting pin to normal position, and a linger stud upon the said ejecting pin and projecting through the slot in the sleeve.
