IMPRQVEMENTIN MACHINE PoR FILING saws'.

Be it known that I, THOMAS llLHUsTI, of Orange,
have invented certain new and useful 4Ilnprovements inMachines for Filing Saws; .and do hereby declare that the following is a full,'clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andy to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part ot' this slfiecilication. i
The nature of myinvention consist-s in the construction ot' a machine for filing saws, andin the arrangement of'the devices hereafter sety forth and explained.

Letter A represents the frame or bed'upon which my machine rests, and which mayy be of any4 desired VSecured toan upright standard, at one end of the C, for drawing the ile back and forth, so as to sharpen Upon the opposite end of the'sha't to which the eccentric is secured, is the small cog-wheel D, which Just under the eccentric B, is the cam-wheel F, which is secured to the same shaft as the wheel E.
Upon the peripher Y of this wheel, there are threeor more cams, which operate the lever G, and which has an Iindentation cut in its surface, in which the lever'H catches, so as to move lthe frame, to which the saw is fastened forward for a new out of the file.

while being tiled, is secured. v
As this'disk is `only held 'down in place, it allows the Moving back and forth in this frame, is the slide L, placed the saw-clamps M, for holding the saw.
The upper part of this slide is "loose, 'so that it can` of the rod which extendsfrom one end to the other. By turning one ofthe thumhserews, at the ends `of at'the point where it passes through the arlh O, the saw can be moved to any desired `point,'without the trouble of moving the whole slide.
Extending up from the side ofthe frame, are the brace l and spring 1t, which clasp the saw just at the point where 4it `is being tiled, in order to prevent it from bending or shaking. .i Suspended from an arm, projecting out from the :disk I, is a slotted lever, S,rwhich has a hooked dog on its end, (as yshown in red lines. xr iig. 2,) which catches in the toothed bar T, on the underside of the slide, so as to move it forward, at each revolution of the cam-wheel F, for the tile to cut in .the next tooth.
Placed just back of this'lever, is the screw U, which regulates the distance which the slide is to be moved.
Attached to a cross-piece, which binds the frame K together, is'a spring, V, which draws the lever S back toits position after it has moved the :'lide forward.
The end of the lever H is fr'rstencd to the bottom of .the wheel strike the end of the lever, it raises this rod upward, carrying the le with it, raising it from the saw, while it is being moved forward.
Inorder to regulate thc pressure of the li'le on the saw, a spring, X, has been attached to the end of the lever, which can b'e varied at pleasure, by changingr the length of the connecting-pin.
Upon the rod XV, is placed a block-Y, which supports one end iof the tile-holder. In this block, is placed a burr or nut, by means oi' which 'the tile can be lowered or raised to any desired point.`
The endof the lile-holder passes through a slot cut in the block, and out through the one in theupright Z, which serves as a guide to it while moving back an d lforward.
Extending up' from the frame A, is the support b, which has -a curved slot `cut in it, so that the guide c, which holds the heel of the tile, can be raised or lowered at will. v
This heel d consists of a block, in which the rear.
end of the tile is secured, and basa number of vertical grooves, ext-ending upward on its end, as seen in tig. 3.
In the front end ot' the block c, there are corresponding grooves made, so that the heel d will tit in them, and` move up fle. 4
The tile-bar f, which connects the two parts of the `file-holder together, is secured to the top of the heel d, andpasses back over the end of the block c.
About the middle of this block, the screw g, having a spiral springaround its surface, ispassed through the bar into the block, securing them together, but at the same time allowing the iile-bar to play up and down, so as to letthe tile adjust itself tothe saw.
Through the' back end of this bar, is the screw i, the lower end of which bears upon the arm O, so as to regulate the height at which the die' is to be raised while moving back and forth.
To the back endof the block lf, which holds-the and down, so as to give elasticity tofthe front end of thc file, is the segment u, which is pivoted on, in such a manner as to be turned freely around, so as to change the file from the edge to the tlat side. In the top of this segment., there are a number of holes made, through which a pin is, passed, so
as to secure it at any desired point.
In cach of the blocks l and 1.', which hold the iile, there is placed a small round cylinder, o, in which there is 'made a triangular opening, (as shown by red lines in fie'. 3,) in which the end of the tile is placed, and then is secured b'y//ueans ff a screw, or any suitable device. The one in ythe heel Z is movable, and can be turned entirely around, but the one in the block k is seemed firmly to the segment n, and forms au axle, on which it turns..
In order to accommodate the holder to files of every length, thc'bloek L is made to slide back and forthon the bar f, and is secured at any desired point by means of a screw, I.
In using this machine, there is but oneI shaped tile that will answer the purpose perfectly, and this a three-corneredmue, of the same size from end to end,
without any taper at any point.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The block Y, provided with a burr, so that the iille can be lowered or raised, and working on the screwrod \V, incombination with the tile-barf, screw g, and set-screw yi, constructed to operate as and for the purposes set forth.
2. 'lhe slide L, moving backand forth in the frame K, and provided with the clamps M, brace P, and spring, and so constructed that it can be moved by means of the screw-rod N, s0 as to adjust the saw withoutloosening the clamps, substantially as shown.
3. Providing the heel ot' the ile with grooves, so that it can move up and down, for the purpose of giving elasticityY to the file, substantially as set forth.

The cylinder o, .in which the ends of the le are secured, in combination with the segment 1i, when used substantially as specified.
(i. The segment 11,11aving openings in its top, so that it can be secured at any desired point, for giving a suitable pitch to the le, substantially as described.
7. Levers H and S, spring V, and cam-wheel F, when used to move the slide tor\vard,n combination with the screw U and slide L, lwhen constructed as described, and operated by the screw-rod N, substantially as shown.
The file-holder, when composed of the file-barf, grooved wheel (l, block lf, segment yu, and cylinders o, when con'ibined substamtially as described.
