Be it known that I, THOMAS JEFFERSON FLA'Ge, of the city, county, and State of New York, have made an invention of a new and useful article of manni'acture, to wit, a Composite Felt Suspender-End, and that the-following is a Tull, clear, and exact description and specification of the same. My present invention is an improvement upon the articleY of manufacture described in the Letters Patent of 'the' United States, granted to my assgnees, .Fisk, Clark, and Flagg, the 27th day of April, A. D. 1869, and its object is to attain wholly, Or mainly, the advantages incident tothe original invention, but with the addition ot' greater' strength, when the articles are of equal thick-ness.

' To this end, my invention con`sists of a suspender- 'end,'faced with felt, and composed of -felt Vcombined with"b1`xckskin, chamois leather, kid, goat-skin, or other stl-engthching-material.

In manufacturing my improved article, I prefer to l employ strong, hard felt, such as is used for the manufacture of bonnets, or such as is'nsed for covering piano-forte hammers. I paste a sheet of the strengthching-material to a sheet of such felt by mea- 1s of wheat-flour paste. I press the composite sheeand permitit to dry. I then cut out the suspender-endsfrom the composite 'sheet by means of a cutting-die, vwhose edge corresponds with the outline of the suspender-end. Each of said-suspender-'ends has a face, a, of hard felt, and a back, b, Of, buekskin, the two pieces being pasted together and combined securely by the lines of stitches, represented by thel dotted lines in fig. 1.

Each suspender-end is'fumly connected with the loep C, b y doubling a portion lof it throughQthe loop, and making it fast by an eyelet, d, which is riveted, byjmeans of an eyelet-press.A The lop C is attached to a'plate, e, which is perforated with a slot, f, that is 'raveL and in case of a rear 'suspender-end, I prefer to conadapted to hook upon a stud projecting from the buckleof the shoulder-strap.

In some cases, I manufacture the articles of two thicknesses of felt, with a layer of goat-skin or 'kid between tliem'; -and .in some cases, ot' a single thickness of felt, anda single thickness of chamois leather,

with a layer of gOatskinorother strengthening-material between the two. Ineither case, I prefer to conduct themanufacture by 4first producing a composite sheet by pasting the material together.

The faces ofthe articles may -be made of any desired color, by nsingfelt dyed-of that color. I prefer to employ,.for my manufacture, felt produced`without spinning and weaving, but felt produced in part by spinning and weaving will answer the purpose,pro# vided the felting-process hasl beenefiected so thoroughly thatthe edges of the article, when cut, do .not The articles may be made o i any desired form,

Composite felt suspender-ends, made as above described,have the ornamental appearance, and freedom from ravelli'ng at the edges, oi' a suspender-end cornposed wholly of felt, and also the advantage that they do not tend to stain the clothing with-Which the felt face is in contact, even though the, suspender-ends he -the mode in which it maybe produced, I declare that I am aware, that suspender-ends have been made of two or more thicknesses of various materials, and
