This invention relates to improvements in machines in which the tool support is ca able of a lengthwise movement in order that the tool muy be quickly presented to the worlt, a slow movement imparted to the tool while the work iii being done, und a quick return of the tool to its starting position.
The object, of this invention is to provide nieiiin-i whei'eli the dill'ercnt movements uro independent of euch other, tlnit is, one must be completed before another is commenced.

While in the drawings` I have shown m improvements in a drilling machine in whie a quick return movement is im arted to the drill spindle l have not decine it necessary to embody auch element in moet of the claims as my improvements are complete without auch movement and it would only be adding an old movement to my improvement without .in any manner changing the nature of my improvements.

In a drilling machine, in combination a rotatable and lon -itudinally movable drill spindle, a quick at vancing' mechanism and work feed mechanism for successively advancing the spindle in the saine direction, means for startin f the quick advancing mechanism, means or holding the work feed mechanism out of action during thc quick advancing movement of the spindle, antomatic means for first stopping the quick ndvancin mechanism and afterward releasing sai holding means to icrinit the work toad mechanism to be plaem into action.
