PROJECTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. MUN- SHAW, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattie, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Projecting Devices, of which the following is a, specification.

My invention relates to apparatus-of the above type and has for its primary object to, provide a device of novel construction including a throwingarm with which a target is associated for controlling the operation thereof.

Other objects will be set forth as my de scription progresses and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which I desire protection, succinctly defined in my annexed claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention secured in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side view, in partial sec tion, taken from the inner side of the device.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a supporting frame 1 consisting of a horizontally disposed arm provided intermediate its ends with an angular bracket 2 with which suitable securing means, as screws 3, are engaged for securing the device to a post or other support, as 4.

Reference numeral 5 indicates a throwing arm, the same being disposed lengthwise of frame 1 and having an angular end portion 5, journaled in and projecting through a bearing (3 on the forward end of said frame. The projecting end of the journaled end portion 5 of the throwing arm is made fast to one end of a coiled spring 6, whose other end is secured, as indicated at 7, to bracket 2. Frame 1 has its rear end portion off-set laterally, as at 1, so as to lie in the path of movement of the throwing arm and thereby limit the movement thereof.

Off-set frame portion 1 is provided with spaced guide flanges 8, 8, between which the free end portion of throwing arm 5 is engaged when said arm is set and held by a catch or trigger 9, pivotally supported on a horizontal extension 8", provided on the latter of said flanges. Catch or trigger 9 is arranged to engage over the throwing arm, as shown in Flg. 2, and as now considered, the same is provided with the inner Specification of Letters Patent.

end portion of an outwardly projecting horizontal target arm 10, pivoted at 10 on said flange extension 8, and provided on its outer .end portion with a target 11, .of any desired construction. A spring 12 serves to return arm 10 to normal position after each operation thereof.

The free end portion of throwing arm 5 is provided with a projectile holder 13, this being conveniently formed by bending said arm, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 and bringing the end thereof to lie beneath catch or trigger 9. This holder or set for the projectile, as herein shown, is of circular formation, being adapted for reception of a spherical projectile or ball 14. It may obviously however, be of any other suitable construction.

Throwing arm 5 is designed to make substantially a complete revolution in throwing a projectile, such movement being terminated by the free end portion of said arm striking the underface of the frame off set portion 1.

In setting the throwing arm it is swung from beneath the frame offset portion 1 on top of the same, where it is engaged with the catch or trigger 9 between the flanges 8, S, as before explained, which setting movement of the throwing arm rewinds spring (3.

My invention aims to provide an amusement device which in furnishing amusement will also be productive of good results particularly with respect to furnishing healthful exercise and good training for the eye and hand. With this end in view the operation of the device is as follows: In operation the device is secured to a suitable support a, and the throwing arm set as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A pitcher now, standing a predetermined distance away, say 18 feet, pitches a missile, as for example a ring 15 atthe target 11, which upon striking the target effects a swinging of the arm 10 and catch or trigger 9, thereby releasing the throwing arm 5 so that the projectile 14 will be thrown or discharged high into the air, to be caught by the pitcher.

In using the present device an interesting game follows the choosing of two teams, the members of which pitch alternately at the target and record points only with respect to projectiles caught. If desired the projectiles placed in the device by a referee may obviously have different valuations.

The throw of the trap can be varied by securing frame 1 to its support at a slight inclination from the horizontal, as' Will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, what I c1aimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is:

1. A device of the type set forth comprising a throwing arm provided with means for holding a projectile, means supporting said throwing arm for rotary movement, a spring for swinging said throwing arms, an arm pivoted intermediate its ends to said means and having its inner end portion engaged over said throwing arm to prevent swinging thereof, and a target on the outer end portion of said last named arm.

2. A device of the type set forth comprising a frame, a throwing arm journaled 011 one end portion of said frame for rotary movement, a spring engaged with the journaled end portion of said throwing arm for swinging the same, the other end portion of said frame being provided with means for limiting throwing movement of said arm, and a trigger for normally holding said arm against movement.

3. A device of the type set forth comprising a throwing arm provided with means for holding a projectile, means supporting said arm for rotary movement, a spring for operating said arm, a target, and an arm carrying said target pivoted to said means and having one end portion arranged to hold said throwing arm in set position.

4. A device of the type set forth comprising a frame having one end portion off set in a lateral direction, a throwing arm journaled on said frame for movement below the same and arranged to have its throwing movement limited by said off set portion thereof, a spring for operating said throwing arm, a trigger on the off set portion of said frame for holding throwing arm in set position, and a target supported for movement and connected to said trigger.

5. A device of the type set forth comprising a frame having a laterally extending bracket, a throwing arm journaled 011 one end portion of said frame for movement from above to a point below the same and provided with means for holding a projectile, the other end portion of said frame be ing formed with an off set portion lying in the path of said throwing arm to limit the throwing movement thereof, a trigger on the last named end portion of said frame, a coil spring for operating said throwing arm, a target, and means connecting said target with said trigger, for the purpose specified.
