GUARD FOR WATER-GASES.
water in a steam boiler and that are more l especially serviceable upon alocomotive, and has for its object to provide a simple and 1nexpensive device of this character that shall g be etlicient and reliable in use.
A further object of my invention is to provide a gage that has not only the safety and reliability required to positively avoid injury to the engineer or fireman having charge of the locomotive upon which the gage is used resulting from flying pieces of glass or escaping steam or hot water upon breakage of the glass of the gage, but that comprises a guard having three windows arranged at suitable intervals in the guard, one facing the firemans position, another facing the engineers position, and another facing the burner of a lamp with which the guard is provided, so that the glass of the gage and its contents may be adequately illuminated at all times and the engineer and fireman are able to observe the height of the water in the gage with facility at all times.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
ith these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Referring now to the drawings 1 designates the glass tube of the gage, which glass is provided with an upper head 2 and a lower head 3, to which are connected respectively the pipes 4 and 5 leading from the steam-space and water-space of the boiler Specicaton of Letters Patent.

(not shown) the guard for the glass 1 consist-ing of a rectangular case or shield 1 composed in the main of sheet metal and surrounding the gage and extending from slightly above the top of the glass to slight-ly below the same. Said case is provided with a top and bottom end G and 7 respectively, each having a slotted portion 8 to receive the pipes 4 and 5, the lower slotted portion being shown in plan in Fig. 4.
Secured to the sides 9 and 10 of the case 1 by means of the bolts 11 and plates 11 are. rectangular sheets of mica 12 covering the rectangular openings 13 in said sides and serve as windows whereby the water glass is rendered visible to the engineer and fireman whose positions are on opposite sides of the guard. The case 1 is held in position by means of two removable headed rods 14 adapted to slide through perforations 15 provided in disks 16 and 17 which are secured to the pipes 4 and 5 respectively. Two sleeves 18 are secured in the corners of the case 1, as shown in Fig. 4, and the rods 14 when passed through said sleeves, as shown in Fig. 3, hold the,
guard in position.
The rear sliding door 19 of the case 1 is removable and consists in a perforated plate having longitudinal reinforcing ribs 2O and U-shaped grooves 21 formed in the edges thereof. The flanges 22 in the rear edges of the sides 9 and 10 of the case 1 are adapted to project into the U-shaped grooves 21 and hold the door 19 in position, the vlatter being provided with a handle 23.
The rectangular opening 24 in the front of the case 1 is covered by a rectangular removable glass 25 which is vertically slidable in the guard grooves 26 formed in the corners of the case 1, a stop 27 being provided on which said glass is adapted to rest.
A substantially cylindrical lamp casing 23 is positioned in front of and soldered to the case 1, the lamp 29 being adapted to rest in the bottom of said casing and to illuminate the water glass. The door 30 is hinged to the casing 28 by means of the hinges 31, a. spring snap 32 adapted to engage the projection 33 being provided to lock the door in the closed position. A glass front 34 is provided in the door 30 in order that the coal in the locomotive tender may be illuminated, the direction of the rays of light from the lamp 29 being shown in Fig. Ll.
Then the guard is installed in a locomotive having means for electric lighting, an incandescent lamp 35 may be provided in the casing 28 to be used instead of the oil lamp 29. A lamp holder 36 is therefore provided in the top of the casing 2S, the saine being concentric with the walls of said casing, as shown in detail in Fig. 5, and when the incandescent lamp is not used a cap 37 is provided and adapted to cover the opening of said holder. A series of pertorations 3S are provided around the top and bottoni ot` the casing, as shown in Fig. this provision being necessary for the draft ot the lamp 29. And the perforations iii the door 19 are provided to allow steam to escape iii case a glass is broken.
llvhile l have shown what l deem to be the preferable torni ot my invention, l do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be slightl modifications thereof which would be coinprehended within the scope ot my invention.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a device of the class described, a
water glass having a head at the upper and lower extremity thereof, pipes leading t'rom the steam-space and water-space ot a boiler to said upper and lower heads respectively, a disk secured to each of said pipes adjacent said heads, a rectangular`` case surrounding said glass interposed between and adapted to be secured to said l 4 ot .said casing tor holding an incandescent disks, a substantially cylindrical lamp casing containing a lainp arranged parallel with and secured to said case, a glass winj dow or partition arranged in such a manner that said water glass may be illuminated by said lamp, and mica windows secured in each side ot said case, substantially as and ttor the purposes specified.
2. In a device of the class described, a f
water having a head at the upper and lower extremities thereof, pipes leading from the steam space and water-space of a boiler to said upper and lower heads respectively, av horizontally disposed disk provided with perforations and secured to each ot said pipes adjacent said heads, a rectangular case provided with sleeves in two ot' its corners registering with said perforations in said disk, said case surrounding said glass and interposed between said disks, removable headed rods passing through the perforations in said disks and through the sleeves iii said case, mica. windows in said case, a substantially cylindrical lamp casing containing a lamp disposed parallel to and secured to said case, a glass window arranged in said case adjacent said casing in order that thel lanip therein may illuminate said glass, a door having a glass front hinged to said casing and means for locking said door, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In a device ot' the class described, a water glass having a head at the upper and lower extremity thereof, pipes leading from the steam-space and water-space of a boiler to said upper and lower heads respectively, a disk secured to each ot said pipes adjacent said heads, a rectangular case surrounding said glass having a rear perforated vertically slidable door Vand grooves formed in its front, mica side windows in said case, a lamp casing containing a lamp secured to said case, a removable glass secured in said grooves formed in the iront oit said case, a door having a glass iroiit hinged to said casing, and means in the top lamp, sulistaiitially as and for the purposes specified.
