To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR GEORGE WVI-IITEHORNE-COLE, a subject of His Majesty the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at SS Sackville road, I-Iove, Brighton, in the county of Sussex, in that part of the United Kingdom called England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vaporizers for Medicines and Disinfectants, of which the following is a specification.
The ordinary spray apparatus, the nebulizer, atomizer and such like apparatus do not effectively answer their purpose by reason of the substance or substances used in these apparati, although very minutely divided indeed though they be, yet taken in the mass or as a whole is necessarily in the form of drops of the liquid used in that apparatus, and again the drug used in either of the aforementioned apparati, does not reach the whole of the lung substance, a great deal of the drug in proportion used settling upon one portion of the lung viz the bronchi, and thereabout while other parts are practically or quite untouched.
Now the object of my invention is to improve upon the already existing apparatus for impregnating air and for inhalation purposes comprising a boiler having a nozzleoutlet and a receptacle, contained within the said boiler but not communicating with it having an air inlet and a nozzle outlet located closely adjacent to the boiler outlet, in such manner that the steam issuing from the latter sucks up the vapor of a substance under volatilization contained in the receptacle and carries it off with it.
Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 a vertical section and Fig. 3 shows an alternative form of distributer.
The apparatus consists of a receptacle for the purpose of holding boiling water or a steam boiler suspended into which but not in any way communicating with the interior of the boiler, is a tube the lower portion of which is for the purpose of containing the drug or drugs which are to be vaporized or volatilized, and in such a way and position is the tube suspended, that the steam generated in the boiler is able to entirely encircle this tube. The upper part of this tube, has aremovable cap in which is a funnel shaped opening for the entrance of air this cap and funnel shaped opening being in one piece.
The steam from the boiler issues from the boiler tube the vapor arising from the drug or drugs being vaporized or volatilized in the receptacle from its tube, the latter being assisted in its exit from its tube mainly by the pressure of the current of fresh air gaining entrance through the funnel shaped opening in the cap of the tube, so that the drug vapor is kept constantly escaping and is being replacedby the fresh air gaining entrance also to some extent by the suction like action exerted by the steam issuing from the boiler tube as it passes over the point of exit of the vapor tube within itself and to a very slight extent by the pressure of the vapor itself. The steam becomes saturated with the vapor of the drug or drugs used and distributes and intermixes it with the air to be inhaled or with the air of the room.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I now proceed to describe the same regard bein had to the accompanying sheet of drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereupon.
The apparatus comprises the boiler 0 mounted upon legs I and having a dome shaped top A wherein enters the tube (Z having a detachable lower part as at H designed to contain the drug or drugs and this tube is fitted with a loose funnel shaped top- F through which air enters. A straight tube M from the boiler unites with the curved tube L from the vaporizer just before the nozzle N as shown. The vapor from the drug or drugs intimately mixed with steam, issues, and is distributed through the trumpet B, one end of which is considerably larger than the other the smaller distributing end being employed for inhalation pur poses and the larger end for distributing the mixed vapors about a room for disinfecting purposes or for the purpose of impregnating the air of the room with the said vapor and this trumpet is supported upon a perforated plate Gr having a largecentral hole or perforation for the passage of the common nozzle N. The plate is supported in position by means of a wire loop IV surrounding the upper extremity of the tube (Z and carrying preferably seven clips or fastenlngs so arranged that three support the trumpet in one position and four in-the other position.
The legs I of the device may be made detachable for convenience in packing. The said device may be employed for vaporizing any suitable drug or substance and for distributing the mixed vapor for medicinal 1. A vaporizer for medicines and disin- 1 fectants comprising in combination, a boiler, a tube having one end closed and the other end open and having its closed end projecting into the boiler and its other end permanently open to the atmosphere, a distributer for the vaporizer, a nozzle pipe leading from said boiler to the distributor, and l a pipe leading from said tube to said nozzle and joining said nozzle pipe at a point in advance of the intake end of said nozzle pipe.
2. In an improved apparatus for impregnating air with medicinal and disinfectant vapors, the combination with a boiler, of a tube entering therein fitted with a loose funnel shaped top, pipes leading from the boiler and tube respectively and uniting in a common nozzle, a perforated plate supported over the said nozzle and a distributor having ends of unequal diameter designed to be supported in two positions upon said plate by means of attachment devices; substantially as described and shown in the drawings and for the purposes specified.
3. A vaporizer for medicines and disinfectants comprising in combination, a boiler, an open topped tube extending therein and communicating with the outer air closed to the boiler, said tube being provided with a branch tube, a nozzle communicating with the boiler in said branch tube, the branch tube communication with the nozzle being i in advance of the point of communication between the nozzle and the boiler, and a distributer communicating with said nozzle.
