In certain operationsof the machine, with which the present invention is not concerned, it is desirable to lift the rack out of engagement with the escapement dogs in order to permit the carriage to be released, and this raising of the rack bar will also serve to lift themargin stop bar in position to clear the various devices with which it normally cont-acts, so that in releasing .the carriage from the escapement dog, it will travel freely without obstruction of any kind. The stop block which limits the movement of the carriage. in the first direction operates in the manner previously described, and can belifted into position to clear the stop pin 3%, r the other devices in the manner previously. set forth. By hinging or pivoting the stop plate in the manner specified, it will easily ride over the stops or other devices on .a backward movement, so that no difficulty will be experienced in returning the carriage to its original position. In a typewriter line lock mechanism, the combination of a carriage, an escapement rack rotatably secured'to the carriage, a rod forlocking the type bars in non-operative position and suitabl connected with a locking hook, a lever mec anism for engaghook, a margin stop bar roto the carriage, a stop block tatably secure adjustably secured to the margm stop bar 1 the locking lever mechanism, independent means for rotating the margin stop bar and the stop block out of alinement with the locking 1ever mechanism, and means for moving the escapement rack out of engagement with the escapement device, and for rotating the margin stop bar and stop block out of-alinement with the locking substantially as described.
