Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST N. HUMPI-IBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Suspender-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ornamental suspender buckles, and the objects of my improvements are to provide efficient and reliable means of securing the ornament to the buckle.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a side elevation of an ornamental suspender buckle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the same with the clamping member turned 90 degrees from the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the same with the clamping member turned 180 degrees from the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line :0 a: of Fi 1. Fig. 5 is a development of the blank for the plate of the clamping member shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a different style of ornament from that shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4:, with the location of the holding means indicated by dotted lines. Figs. 7 and 8 are similar views of other styles of ornaments.
A is the body member of a suspender buckle of any generally well known form on which is mounted by hinge joints 10 a swinging clamping member B of which the clamping member proper comprises, all integral and made out of a piece of sheet metal, a finger plate 11, hinge lugs 12, and a clamping jaw 13, all of well known form.
As shown in Fig. 1 the buckle parts are in normal position for clamping the webbing, not shown. In this position said finger plate 11 hangs downward from the said hinge joints 10, and would expose a generally broad fiat surface to the front, except for the ornament C which is mounted on the front face 14: of the same in a manner as will be herewith described. The said ornament C may be a slab of pearl, stone, or other material suitable for ornament and embellishment, having a generally flat back surface and a front surface likewise generally flat, with the edges square or rounded, as may be desired, and having a shape generally in conforinity to that of the said finger plate 11 which in itself may be shaped to suit the fancy of the designer. In other words, the said ornament G covers the front face 14 of the finger plate 11. As a means of mount ing the said ornament C on the said finger plate 11 I make use of an eyelet rivet connection D comprising an eyelet rivet 15, the body 16 of which passes through a hole 17 in the said finger plate 11, the foot 18 of which is received in a circular recessed socket 19 in the back face 20 of the said ornament C, and having the outer end headed over to form the rivet head 21 bearing against the back face 22 of the said finger plate 11. The said eyelet rivet connection D answers generally as a means of securing the said ornament C on the front face 14 of the said finger plate 11 of the clamping member B, but in view of the fact that the said finger plate 11 is subject to considerable handling, even under normal conditions of usage, I find it advantageous to supplement the said eyelet rivet connection I), particularly with a view to cooperate with the same to resist any tendency to rotate the said ornament C on the said rivet connection D as a pivot, and
for this purpose I provide suitable auxiliarylugs 23, shown in Fig. 1 as two in number. The said auxiliary lugs 23 are formed integral with the said finger plate 11, as shown in the view of the blank for the clamping plate B in Fig. 5, and are bent up at right angles to said plate so as to bear against the lateral edges of the said ornament C.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5, the finger plate 11 and the ornament G are essentially of the same shape and size and are shaped somewhat like the segment of a circle, with corners cut off, the chord forming the straight and horizontal upper edge and the arc of the circle the lower edge, the eyelet rivet connection I) located essentially in the center of the body of the figure, and the lugs 23, integral with the said plate 11, and bent forward so as to bear against the bottom edges of the said ornament C, one on each side, near the outer lower corner. This is the preferred arrangement for the particir lar style of ornament shown and described. In Fig. 6 a generally similar arrangement is shown as that described, adapted to a different shape of ornament C, the location of the eyelet rivet connection D and auxiliary lugs 23 being indicated by dotted lines. As the object of the said auxiliary lug 23 as dean ornament C having parallel top and bottom sides 25 and rounded ends 26, the lug bearing against the bottom edge 25 at the center. Whether one or more of the said lateral auxiliary lugs 23 23 are used, the function of the same is as described to resist any tendency to rotary motion of the ornament G, and such tendency is effectively resisted by the said lugs on account of the relative remoteness of the same from the said eyelet rivet connection D.
I claim as my inventioni V 1. In a suspender buckle, a clamping lever plate provided with an ol'fi'iamental plate on its front face, means for securing said ornamental plate generally on said front face comprising an eyelet rivet and supplementary means for preventing relative rotary motion comprising an upturned lug on said lever plate in contact With the edge of said ornamental plate.
2. In a suspender buckle, a clamping lever plate provided with an ornamental plate on its front face, means for securing said ornamental plate generally on said front face and supplementary means for preventing relative rotary motion comprising a lug on said lever plate bearing against the edge of said ornamental plate.
