Be it known that I, JOHN .RrnNEHm a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Say vanna, in the county of Carroll and ltate of Yto `provide a novel formof a paratus whereby the'reflaying-of the rai s rof a railroad may be accomplished more expeditely and economically Athan has heretofore been possible.
In re-layinnf Ithe rails of a. railroad .the new rails have alwa s, so far as I am aware, been picked up an `.nut in place by hand labor. Ordinarily the'v new rails are carried alon on the' old trackon cars and thrown ott t e carsone by one. The old rails-on that side of the track are then. removed from the'ties and the new rails grappled with hand tongs and put in the places of the old rails. The same' procedure is, of course, followed 'at the other side of the track. This method of laying the new rails requires the .Xpenditure of a great deal of-time and labor. It takes a large ang of laborers to lift the rails from the paces where they are strewn along the shoulder of the qroadbed and carry them to their-places on the ties;
and, of course `this amount of labor increases -with the moderntendency to use increasingl heavier rails.

The positioning of the rail is facilitated by the fact that the lever is mounted so as to swing laterally, althouvh thisis perhaps not essential.
