To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVAN 'I. EvANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westerville, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Telephone-Transmitters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in telephone transmitters and includes especially a disinfectant receptacle associated with the mouth piece, provided with means of communication with the membrane there in; a sponge or other porous body is placed at the mouth of the opening into the mouth piece and a needle valve which seats the porous member and also regulates the size of the opening communicating with the receptacle.
Essentially therefore my invention in cludes a disinfectant receptacle for telephone transmitters and regulable means providing communication between the receptacle and the inner surface of the mouth piece of the transmitter.
The details of the construction will more clearly appear hereinafter.
In the drawings which accompany this specification and are hereby made a part thereof, Figure 1 is a side view of a telephone transmitter; Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section along the line A-A of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a mouth piece adapted to be secured in the holder member 2.
3 is a perforated membrane for receiving and transmitting the sound waves in the usual manner.
At 4: is shown a receptacle provided in the body of the holder member 2 which is curved in outline to adapt itself to the form of the holder; the opening, 5, thereinto is closed by the screw cap 6, after the disinfectant 7, is placed in the receptacle.
The passage way 8, through the wall of the mouth piece 1, opens thereinto adjacent to the membrane 3, to conduct the disinfectant into the mouth piece where it evaporates and destroys all germs found therein and objectionable odors generated thereby Specification of Letters Patent.

in the normal use of the telephone. A sponge 9, or other porous substance is placed in the mouth of the opening 8 and becomes saturated with the disinfectant and gradual evaporation takes place therefrom. To secure said sponge in place and also to regulate the size of the opening communicatmg with the disinfectant receptacle, I provide a needle valve 10, inserted through the wall of the holder member at 11, and through the wall of the mouth piece at 12, extending across the face of the membrane 3 at the front side thereof.
The rod 14, is threaded at 15 and pro vided with the mill head 16, whereby the valve, 10, may be inserted into or retracted from the opening into the disinfectant receptacle, and thereby the outflow or feed of the disinfectant is reguluated.
The use of my invention will now more clearly appear to be as follows: The disinfectant 7, stored in the receptacle 4-, is admitted into the porous member 9, and evaporates from the surface of the latter and is disseminated over the mouth piece, 1, and the membrane, 3; the sponge is held in place by the rod, 14, tapered at its end to form a needle valve, 10, which also controls the degree of the opening from the passage way 8, and hence the quantity of the disinfectant that may enter the porous member, 9. The rod, 141, is threaded and may therefore be turned to set the valve 10 as desired.
What I claim is:
1. In a telephone transmitter comprising a holder member and a mouth piece, a disinfectant receptacle communicating with the interior of said mouth piece, a porous member for absorbing the disinfectant, and means for positioning said porous member and regulating the flow of disinfectant thereinto.
2. In a telephone transmitter comprising a holder member and a mouth piece, a dis infectant receptacle having an opening communicating with the interior of said mouth piece, a porous 'member in said opening, a rod controlling the degree of said opening and fixing said porous member in place.
3. In a telephone transmitter comprising a holder member and a mouth piece, a disposition of said rod from the exterior of infectant receptacle having an opening comsaid holder member.
