DRAFTGr EAR.
Specification of Letters Patent. )Pmi-,tainted Jann, 2li, application filed. November 7, 190. Serial No. Ill.
19Min To all whom it may concern:
B e it known that I, Hanni F. Porn,`of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Draft-Gear, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference Vbeing had to the accompanyingdrawings,
'inensions to give the strength and stiffness 20- required to resist the longitudinal stress `to wliich'it is put when in use. The platform end sill is made of two parallel parts 3, 3', seprirated vertically from one another to a su 'cient extent to permit passage between them of the buiier shank 2', the lower inextrber 3 serving to support and guide the buffer shank in its longitudinal movements. At the rear end of the buier shank are clamped the two parts oi a buffer spring ease 4C, Li, which contains the buffer spiin 5, ay second spring case member 6 being iitte telescopically within the member l and having a sliding bearing on a curved segment 7. The novel feature of this part of In" invention resides in the usev of a bader s ank in a continuous-straight piece which extends in a' direct line from a point midway of the height of the transverse ineniber oit the buffer to the spring; and in supporting the buffer shank by the divided end sill. rlhis construction enables me to get great strength andi'gidity, and dispenses with offsetting or foijking the butter shank.
S is the ear coupler having a rearward extension or shank 8', which at its rear end is preferably extended upwardly into line or nearly into line with the buffer shank` and is connected pivotally by a pin 9 to the yoke 1U oi the draft rigging which is prof` vided with ` followers 1,1 and draft spring l2, mounted between draft irons l, which are alixed to 'the center sills 14- of the ear. The' coupler is engaged with the buil'er by engagements l5, 1G and 41 7, which permit/real`- ward motion o't' the bull'er independently of 19 and Yare retainedv by nuts` 25. 'head of each bolt there is a projecting boss the coupler, the construction being such that when the coupler and its shank swing radially on the axis 9 in passing over acurved portion of the track, the butler being enV gaged therewith is carried with the coupler. 1t is necessary in such construction'to have a guiding connection between. the draft gear and the truck, and my invention relates to a novel construction of this portion of the device.
In the drawing, 18 is the front pait of the Ytruck frame having a bracket 19 attached thereto. This bracket has forwardly ei-z tendingpockets 19. lhey are designed to retain the centering springs 20.
2l is, an arm which is. pivoted to the bracket L9 at a pivotal center 22, and is slidin ly connected to the draft gear at 23. T is'arin has lateral wings 2l adapted respectively to engage the headsdf" oi' bolts 24. These bolts 24 pass through the springs 20 andv also through holes in the laoltlet tu tie 26, whose lateral extensions tit and slide beneath guiding lugs 27 on the bracket 19. When the coupler is forcedy laterally out of its normal position at the centers of the track,A the forward end 21* ol the arm 2l is also carried laterally and one of its Wings 2l' is moved against the corresponding head 24 of the bolt, ushing it forwardly against the spring an compressing the saine by means of the shoulders 24 on the bolt, thus putting the parts under tension. which, when the force dis lacing the cou ler is removed, restores it su stantially to die center'ot the track. y
Modifications may be made in the construction andarrangement of theparts, since A radial draft gear, a laterally movable buffer engaged therewith and having at its iront end a transverse hailing member and a rigid shank extending rearwardly niidway of th`e height of the transverse member and in line with the biill'ei'spriinr, and a buffer-spring which backs the shan i.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand.
