Application filed April 26, 1909. Serial No. 492,363.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Netawaka, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Desks; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being. had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as applied with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the desk turned down against the floor. Fig. 3 is a detail erspec tive view of one of the spring catc es and the lug with which it engages. Fig. 4: is a detail side View of the same.
The invention relates to school desks, hav ing for its object the provision of a desk which while fixed to the floor may conveniently be turned down thereagainst for convenience of the janitor in sweeping, and as readily returned to normal position.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, the letter a, designates the desk, having as shown a metal supporting frame 6, and an attachment including a back rest 0, secured to said frame, and a seat (Z, having supportin arms 0!, cl, hinged to outward extensions of the frame I), at their inner ends at (P, 03 The frame support 1), forward of the bottom thereof is hinged to the floor of the room at b, b, in such manner that it may be turned forward and downward upon said outward extensions against the floor, the seat cl, assuming at the same time a folded position to allow the desk to more nearly approach the floor. The extensions b", extend outward beyond the plane of the back rest and the seat hinged thereto isadapted to turn up in such close relation to the back rest as to be out of the way, the desk when turned I at its middle down resting upon said outward extensions b".
In order to secure the desk in normal raised position a laterally operating spring rode, secured to the floor, has engagement at its middle portion with the under-beveled face e", of a shoulder or lug e, at the lower portion of one of its rear legs and will sna over said lug automatically. The free en portion of the spring rod 6, has engagement with a lateral horizontal slot 9, of a keeper 7 plate g, which serves to keep the sprin rod from lifting out of engagement with said shoulder and at the same time limits its movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is: V
1. A desk havin floor hinges upon its front legs, a latera lug having an underbeveled face upon the lower portion of one of its rear legs, a floor plate having a lateral horizontal slot, anda laterally operating floor spring having engagement at its free end portion with the slot of said floor plate and ortion with said lug.
2. A desk iaving aback rest as a part thereof, extensions at one side having projection outward beyond the plane of the back rest, floor hinges upon its front legs having permanent connection with the desk and with the floor, a seat hinged to said extensions and capable of being turned in close relation to theback rest out of the way, a lateral lug having an under-beveled face upon one ofits rear legs, a floor plate having a lateralhorizontal slot, and a laterally operating floor spring having engagement at its free end portion with said slot and at its middle portion with said lug, said desk being capable of being turned downward upon said hinges to rest upon said extensions.
