SCISSORS AND SHEARS.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 19, 1909.
Patented t an. 2&5, 1919.
Serial No. 523,391.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that l, ALFRED K. CHAPIN, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State ot Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors and Shears, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object ot' the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in scissors and shears, whereby the blades can be conveniently and quickly adjusted by the employment of a spring device on the pivot, to produce the necessary tension between the blades, and thus bring the cutting edges into correct cutting or shearing position, the ar rai'igement being such that the parts of the spring device are locked in the adjusted po sition, thus preventing the parts from gradually working loose and hence insuring proper working of the shears or scissors at all times.
For the purpose mentioned, a tension spring is interposed between the head of the pivot on which the blades are mounted to turn, and one of the said blades, and on the pivot a washer is held against turning, and a nut screws on the pivot against the said washer, which latter and the nut have interlocking means to hold the nut against working loose and thus preventing a reduction in the tension of the tension spring.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a plan view of the improved scissors or shears; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 8 is a side View of the nut; and Fig. 4 is a face view of the washer.
rlhe top and bottom blades A and B of the scissors or shears are provided with the faces A, B, terminating in the usual handles A2, B2, and the said blades A and B are mounted to turn on the pivot C extending loosely through registering apertures A3, P3, formed in the corresponding blades A and B. rFhe pivot C is provided with a fixed, integral head C', against the under side of which presses a flat spring D, resting with its ends on the face B of the plate B,
as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The pivot C is provided with a fiat portion C2 and is threaded at the outer' end, and on the said pivot tits a washer Fl, seated on the tace A of the blade A, the said washer having the wall of its opening E provided with a 'flattened portion E2 fitting the flattened portion C2 of the pivot C, to hold the washer E against turning on the pivot C.
A nut F screws on the threaded outer end of the pivot C and abuts against the said washer E, and the under side of the nut F is provided with a series of recesses F', preterably arranged radially and adapted to cngage a lug E3 integral on the outer face of the washer E. Now when the several parts are assembled, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the nut F is screwed up on the pivot C, then the spring D is placed under tension so'as to press the blades A and B toward each other to a more or less degree. The nut F is turned until one of its recesses F engages the lug E3, so that the nut F is locked against turning on the pivot C, as the washer E is held against turning, and its lug Ef"s engaging one of the recesses F holds the nut F from turning. As the spring D is under tension, it is evident that the nut F is carried by the pivot C in firm contact with the face of the washer E, and as the nut F is held against turning by the washer' E, it is evident that the several parts are not liable to gradually work loose, and hence the proper working of the scissors or shears is insured at all times.
It is understood that when adjusting the tension of the spring D to a more or less de- 4 gree, the nut F is turned sutliciently to bring one of the recesses F into engagement with the lug E3 on the washer E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
Scissors or shears, comprising a pair ot blades, a pivot on which both blades are mounted to turn loosely, the pivot having a head and a flattened threaded portion, a spring interposed between the said pivot head and the blade adj acent to the said pivot head, a washer seated on the other blade and engaging the said pivot, the washer having a portion of the wall oi its opening flattened and iitting the flattened portion of the said pivot, to hold the washer against turning on the pivot, and the Washer having an In testimony whereof I have signed my lntegral 111g 011 11s outer face, and a 1111iY name to thls spemcat'mn1111'11ep1es011 eof screwlng 0n the sald p11/'ot and havlng two s11bsc1'1b111g w1l'1'1esses.
