To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL FRIEDRICH ERN, a subject of the German Empire,residing at Wald, near Solingen, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Razors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a razor, the blade of which may be easily and read-- ily exchanged by hand and replaced by a new blade in a very simple manner. More-- over the arrangement is such that the blade may be easily fixed in any desired position, and its movability regulated with the greatest precision.
The invention consists principally in the provision that the shank of the blade is clamped or heldat the pivot between two springs arranged between the shank and the handle scales and that the pivot or fulcrum for the blade is constituted by two projections located on the inside of the springs, and engaging with suitable recesses or a hole in the shank of the blade. The scales of the handle are held together by a set screw projecting through the scales below the joint. By these means it is possible by simply rotating the set screw to exchange the blade quickly and readily, and also to adjust the rotatability of the blade or to fix the latter in any desired position.
The invention is illustrated in several constructional forms in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an open razor, parts being shown in section for the sake of clearness, and Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views showing modifications of the invention.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the two sides or scales a and b of the handle consist of a single U-shaped metal strip, which, if desired, is provided with a longitudinal groove or may have any appropriate profile. Arranged between the shank c of the blade 0? and the two scales of the handle are two flat steel springs e, f of which the parts e adjacent to the respective scales of the handle are riveted to the inner wall thereof. The other portion f of each spring adjacent to the shank c and adapted to press against this shank, is provided on its inner faces with a projection 7 so formed as to enter an opening from each side in the shank 0 and thereby to form the pivot or the springs e, f attached fulcrum for the blade. Beneath this pivot the two scales a, b are traversed by a screw it by means of which the scales of the handle are held together. By rotation of this screw it in one direction, the scales are slightly loosened, thereby enabling the pivot g to be withdrawn from the blade and the latter to be exchanged. If the screw 72, however is rotated in the opposite direction, to the scales are pressed against the blade to a greater or smaller extent, whereby the rotatability of the blade is accordingly regulated or the blade itself secured in any desired position.
At a short distance from the set screw it a second screw 2' projecting only through one scale a is arranged so as to bear against the other scale 6 or the spring which is attached to the latter. This second screw 2' has the object to confine the movability of the scales with regard to each other to that end or portion of the handle which is connected with theblade. The screw '5 is so adjusted that the lower end of the handle, which is adapted to receive the blade of the razor, always presents a precisely determined slot or sheath. If desired, in place of the screw 2' a pin rigidly secured to the scale a, may be used.
A further constructional form of the razor according to this invention is illustrated in Fig. 2, wherein the handle or scales consist of a non-metallic substance. These scales a and b are each provided on its upper portion with a thin metal sheet or plate 9 which is bent inwardly over the corresponding scale, so as to form a spring u. Arranged on these springs are the lugs g forming the pivot and entering the hole in the blade shank, and the scales are held together by a screw h projecting through both scales. A second screw extending through both scales may, if necessary, be arranged below the screw h.
In the constructional form shown in Fig. 3, the scales are supposed to consist of celluloid or some similar substance. For the purpose of insuring a better resiliency and at the same time strengthening the scales. it is preferable to provide these scales at the outset with a spring a pressed into the scales so as to extend along the whole length of the same. Arranged on this spring are the project-ions g forming the pivot. The clamping of the blade shank is here again effected by dishshaped perforated springs t. A portion of each scale moreover is provided on its outside with a metal strip or fitting s for carrying the set screw it, and the screw t'.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In a razor, in combination, a blade shank provided with an opening therein, a handle having spaced scales between which said shank extends, and springs positioned between said scales on opposite sides of said shank and having shank engaging portions, said springs being provided with lugs engaging the opening in said shank to form a pivot for the blade.
2. In a razor, in combination, a blade shank provided with an opening therein, a
handle having spaced scales between which said shank extends, and springs positioned between said scales on opposite sides of said shank and having shank engaging portions, said springs being provided with lugs engaging the opening in said shank to form a pivot for the blade, and adjustable means holding said scales together, whereby the distance between the scales may be varied to vary the pressure of the springs upon the shank.
