To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iana, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Blockand-llackle Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention abbut to be set forth and claimed pertains to a new and useful block and tackle device designed for use in connection with derricks, but especially adapted in connection with wagons and the like, whereby such may be loaded or unloaded as desired, as will be clearly manifest.

The invention in its fundamental characteristics has for its primary object to provide a device of this design, comprising mainly a rectangular frame in which a suitable drum is journaled, and from which a sectional boxing is suspended, in which seetional boxing or closure a plurality of pulleys or drums are journaled, with which, and the first mentioned drum a flexible cable, rope or other means cooperates, as is clearly evident.

This invention comprises further objects and combination of elements which will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out by the appended claim.

The features, elements and the arrangement thereof which constitute the above ontitled invention may be changed or varied, that is to say, in an actual reduction to prac tice, with the understanding that the changes or variations accruing from said reduction to practice are limited to the scope of the appended claims.

To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combination of features, elements, and advantages, refer ence is to be had to the hereinafter set forth description, and the accompanying drawings, in connection therewith, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the block and tackle device, showing the sectional boxing separated, and showing one end of the device in readiness to be attached to that which is to be lifted or loaded into a wagon. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the block or tackle device showing the sectional boxing closed.

Fig. 3 is a similar view, the parts thereof being shown in sectional elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4: of Fig. 2.

In regard to the drawings wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several illustrations, 1 designates a rectangular frame in which a drum 2 is ]0lll'llill0(l and about which drum a flexible cable, rope, or other means 3 is wound, as shown clearly in the drawings. This drum is journalcd in suitable bearings l of the frame and its ends 5 are Pl'OVltlCd with crank handles (3, whereby the drum may be conveniently rotated so as to wind the cable, rope or other means thereabout. Depending from the lower portion of this frame are supports or members 'i' to the lower extremities of which a boxing 8 is fixed, which boxing consists of two sections 9 and 10 which are designed to be drawn together when the device is not being used, but when the device is in use the sections of the boxing are separated and between them the cable, rope, or other means spans, as shown clearly in Fig. l of the drawings. The section 9 of the boxing has journaled therein a pair of pulleys or drums 1.1 over which the cable, rope, or other means 3 travels, that is to say when the sections of the boxing are in the act of being separated or drawn together. The free ends of the cable are secured to and within the interior of the section 9 of the boxing, as at 13, as shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The section .10 of the boxing is similar in construction to the section f), its interior being of sullicient size so as to contain a plurality of pulleys or drums 13, over which the cable, rope, or other means travels, as is clearly evident. hen the two sections of the boxing are separated there are eight strands of cable, rope, or other means extending between them, which provides a very secure connection between the two sections of the boxing, so as to stand hauling commodities of various sizes and weights, as will be clearly apparent.

The rectangular frame is provided with suitable locking devices l: and designed to cooperate with the drum 2. One of those looking devices prevents rotation of the drum in one direction but when released the other locking device is brought into play so as to prevent rotation of the drum in the opposite direction.

This device may be conveniently utilized in excavating as well as in unloading and loading wagons and similar processes.

From the foregoing the essential features, elements, and the operation of the device together with the simplicity thereof, will be clearly apparent.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful by the protection of Letters Patent, is

In a block and tackle device, a frame, a shaft having cranks on its opposite ends, journaled on the ends, ratchet Wheels on the shaft, oppositely disposed pawls pivoted to the frame adapted to engage the ratchet, arms secured to one end of the frame, a

housing carried by the arms, a shaft journaled to the housing having a plurality of spools thereon, a second housing, a shaft journaled in the housing having a plurality of spools thereon, and Winding means connected to the shaft of the frame and passed alternately over the spools on the shafts in the housings with the ends of said means fastened to the walls of the first housing.
