HOISTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,643, dated October 24, 1899.
Application filed March 29,1899- .To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BERGHOEFER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Ioisting Devices 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has especial reference to that class of hoisting devices which employ what is commonly known as clam-shell buckets; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device, partly broken away to better illustrate certain details of construction, showing a pair of buckets in their closed position for being elevated. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail under side view of the parts shown above the line 3 3 in Fig. 1, omitting the power-cables. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the .worm-gear-supporting frame.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent a pair of clam-shell buckets open at the top and inner adjacent sides and with closed curved bottoms.
B represents the worm gear supporting frame, (shown detached in Fig. 4,) comprising two U-shaped end pieces I) b, united by upper longitudinal beams c 0, having transverse seats or bearings (Z (Z on their upper surfaces for the journals e e of the wormwheels 0 O and drums D D, said journals being held in place by caps ff and suitable bolts, as shown, and the end pieces I? b having bearings g g for the Worm-shaft E, which latter is provided with proper right and left handed threads F G for engagement with the described worm-wheels O O and with a central pulley H.

and J J represent the long arms, and j 7" the short upper arms, of a corresponding pair of links, also pivotally suspended from said shaft K, the lower ends of the long arms J J being pivoted on the described studs a of bucketA and the corresponding ends of the arms J J being pivoted on the studs a of bucket A. The outer ends of the short arms jj are connected together by a brace L and just inside that by a journal M, carrying an idler-pulley m, and similarly the outer ends of the short arms jj are connected together by a brace L and just inside that by a journal M, carrying an idler pulley m. The shaft K is centrally provided with a hoistingpulley O, and the same shaft carries two hangers N N, and from the hanger N ropes, chains, or cables at a run to the drum D on each side of the worm-wheel C, while from the hanger N similar ropes, chains, or cables n a run to the drum D on each side of the Worm-wheel O. In the illustration given the ropes n and 'n are connected to the hangers N and N by means of intermediate rings 19 and 13, passing through holes in said hangers, but this is immaterial.
P P represent the hoisting-cable passing around the hoisting-pulley O, and Q Q the cable that passes around the pulley H on the worm-shaft E to revolve said shaft in either direction, as required, these cables P and Q running to proper engines or other sources of power, (not shown,) and the cable Q travels in the grooves of the idler-pulleys m m, between the same and the braces L L, which latter are preferablyin the form of rollers, as shown, to keepthe said cable within the said grooved idlers and also to lessen friction. Of course the cables P Q maybe ropes or chains, just as preferred.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description of its construction taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. In Figs l and 2 the buckets A A are shown closed and the ropes n n are fully wound up upon the drums D D, the worm-gear in this position keeping the buckets closed. In order to permit the buckets A A to open and separate, the wormshaft E is revolved by means of the cable Q in the direction of the arrows, the Worms G and F on said shaft thereby turning the worming, as before described.
wheels 0 C in the direction shown by the arrows and allowing the ropes n n to unwind from the drums D D, whereupon the said buckets A A will separate and drop by gravity, opening out to their fullest extent and dumping their contents. In this condition the whole device can be lowered by means of the cable P,and when the open buckets reach the mass of material to be elevated the said bucket-s are in the position of scoops or shovels, and an operation of the power-cable Q in the reverse direction will revolve the wormshaft E and the worm-wheels C O in the reverse directions to those indicated by said arrows, thereby closing said buckets together again in their former position (shown in the drawings with the scooped-up material safely held thereby) and winding up the ropes n at upon the drums D D, and then the cable P is operated to raise the load ready for dump- Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In ahoisting device,the combination with a pair of buckets, open at their top and adjacent inner sides, of a hoisting-pulleyand its journal; a pivotal link connection between said journal and said buckets; aworin-gearsupporting frame, carrying aworm-shaft,and pair of worm-wheels a pivotal strap connec tion between said worm-shaft and said buckets; apower-pulleyon the Worm-shaft; winding-drums on the worm-wheel shafts; and hangers'suspended from the hoisting-pulley journal, and'connected by cords, chains or cables to said drums.
2. Inahoistingdevice,the combination with a pair of buckets, open at their top and inner-adjacent sides, of a worln-gear-supporting frame, a worm-shaft and a pair of wormwheels journaled therein; a pair of drums on each worm-wheel journal; a pair of straps pivotally connecting each end of the Wormshaft with the outer upper angle of each bucket; an upper shaft or journal; apair of links suspended from each end of said upper journal and pivotally connected to the outer upper angles of the said buckets; a hoistingpulleyon said upperjournal; a power-pulley on the worm-shaft; a pair of hangers on said upper journal, one on each side of the hoisting-pulley; a pair of cords, chains or cables connecting each hanger with the drums on the adjacent worm-wheel journal; a powercable on the power-pulley and a hoisting-cable on the hoisting-pulley.
