Description

HERBERT.
RAIL JOINT,
. 1909. 947,553,. Patented Jan. 25, 1910.
Albert H bert 800mm UNITE STATES PATENT ()FFTC. i
ALBERT C. HERBERT, OF GLENLYN, VIRGINIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Annnn'r C. Hearst-arr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenlyn, in the county of Giles, State ot Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to rail joints and more particularly to the class of rail connections for oining together the meeting ends of railway rails.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a rail joint in which the meeting ends of railway rails may be joined without the necessity of the usual well known bolt fastenings which are employed for connecting the fish plates in position upon the rails.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a rail connection in which the rail ends will be securely united or held connected so as to form a tight joint at the meeting ends of the rails without any possibility of the separation thereo'l.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a rail joint in which the meeting ends of railway rails may be quickly and securely joined together without the necessity of using bolts and nuts generally employed in securing the adjacent ends of the rails.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a ail joint which is simple in construction strong, durable, thoroughly reliable and etticient in operation and that is inexpensive in the manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings disclosing the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and as pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan View of the meeting ends of Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 518,596.
railway rails with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. is a transverse sectional view.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts through the several views in the drawings.
l teierring to the drawings by numerals. 5 and (l designate generally the adjacent or meeting ends of railway rails which are of the usual well known construction, each having a tread 7. web S and base 9, the latter resting in the ordinary manner upon cross ties 10 ot' the usual type. These rails in their webs have the usual bolt receiving holes or openings and on opposite sides of the said rails are disposed fish plates 11 and 12, the [ish plate 11 being formed at intervals on its inner face with integral hollow cylindrical protuberances or lugs 13 which project through the holes or openings in the webs of the rails and receive integral pins 1 1 on the fish plate '12 at; the opposite sides of the rails.
The lugs 13 and pins 1 1- contain transverse alining openings registering with each other when the pins 1-il have been inserted in the hollow lugs to receive a locking rod 15, the latter formed at one end with an eye terminal 16, while its opposite end contains a slot which detachably receives a key 17 to securely hold the locking rod from becoming detached when securing the fish plates together for joining the meeting ends of the railway rails. It being understood of course that the key 17, is inserted in the rod 15, subsequent to the mounting of the same in the transverse openings contained in the intertitting lugs and pins 13 and 1-1- intcgral with the fish plates.
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. '.lheretore l do not wish to contine myself to the exact construction, shown and described but wish to claim all such modified terms as will come properly within the scope of the appended claim.
\Vhat is claimed is:
Tn combination with the rails having ap ertures in the Webs thereof, fish plates disposed on opposite sides of said rails, hollow fitted lugs and pins for locking the fish lugs integral with and projecting from the plates together. 10 inner face of one fish plate and passed In testimony whereof, I affix my signathrough the apertures in the webs of the tnre, in presence of two witnesses.
rails, pins integral and projecting from the ALBERT C. HERBERT. inner face of the other fish plate and en- Witnesses:
