Description

W. H. HOOPER.
CHANNEL LIP TURNING MACHINE.
APPLICATION rum) 0073.29, 1908.
Patented Jan. 25, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HOOIFER, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THGMAS G. PLANT, OF BOSTON. MASSACHUSETTS.
CHANN EL-LIP-TUIZN IN G MACHINE.
9&7509.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1910.
Application filed October 29, 1903. Serial N0. 460.030.
To 11'! tr/ .0m it may concern:
Be it known that I,VXLLI.\.\[ II. Hoornn, a citizen of the United States. residing at Lynn. in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts. have invented an Iinprovenn-nt in Channcl-L1p-Tnrning Machines. of g which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification. liltc characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention to he hereinafter described tehttcs to machines for treating the soles of 3 boots and shoes. and. more particulartv; to
to leave the. channel open for the reception of the fastcnings which unite the sole to the shoe. the tlap hiring then turned hack again to its first position to cover the fas- Lettings.
f formed hetween the upper and lower hearing portions 2 and 3 of the head. and M- cnred to the shaft l. between the upper and lower bearing portions. is a pulley t' driven by a lNlt T which receives motion tron. any =3 convenient source of power.
The upper portion of the shaft -i may he pl'efcrahly provided with the head on which rests a washer 8 preferably of sonic yielding material. Such as fiber or the like. to provide a yielding resistance to the upward movement of the shaft l. Screw thread d into the upper portion of the upper hearing i. is an adjusting s rew 9. the end of which hears again t the tihrons or elastic washer I A shield 10. shown as hroken away and in section. 1 1g. 1. may surround the pulley Connected to the lower end of the shaft l i is the tool for acting upon the work. said The object of the present invention is to I provide a. simple and eti'ective machine of this general character, the salient featuresor characteristics of which will best he unv 1of which i that when disposed in the chandcrstood from the following description in connection with the drawings which disclose one form or embodiment thereof, the I invention itself being definitely pointed out i in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, parts being broken away, showing the npp ror head portionot' the machine; Fig.2 is a detached detail view showing the wiper or llap turner and its associated channel groover acting upon a shoe sole; and Fig. 3 is a. diagrammatic sectional view to show the position of the upturned tlap and the.
fastenings which secure the sole to the shoe. 1
such fasteniiigs hcin;, located l! the groove formed in the channel.
The supporting head 1 for th appcr portion of the machine may be 0 any usual character and is preferably lorincd as a casting having an upper hearing portion 2 and a lower bearingportion I in which Lcaring'portions is sustained a shaft 4 for tool. for identification. iring herein dcsigl natcd as th wiper or ilap tninei' and comprisingr a head portion ll preferably provided with an interior screw thread 12 adapted to engage corresponding screw threads 1 dotted lines Fig. l, on lhc end (if the sha t 4-.
Formed on the lower portion of the head 1] are the tlap cngaginr and turning surfaccs. 'lhc e stirt'accs are. prcl'crahly formed as downwar-llv and inwardly extending ribs or corrugation It. the general characteristic nel 15 they will engag and by their rotation. open and turn haclurardly the channci flap i as indicated in Fig.
As well known by those skilled in the art. after the iinc of fastenings has been placcd in the tl lltll channel of a shoe sole, and the channel flap returned to its former position. the lltlt Sole is treated to the till ishing operations whcrcin the sole is subjected to pre sure and Mlclt pressure sometimes causes the lines of stitches or other fastenings to impress themselves into the channel flap to such an extent asvto mar the finished appcarancc thereof. The present in ention,
' therefore. in addition to the general char- .carrying the wiper or flap turner and;
groovcr. An opening 5 is pro fc rahly I actcristics of the flap turncrs, as hcreinbcfore indicatml, contcniplatcs the provision of means for producing in the surface of the channel a groove or depression to receive the line of fastcnings or stitches. To this end, as one form of the present invention, the ribs or cm'rngations 14 which act to open and turn the flap, as hLl'UilliXBfUf-J indicated, converge and meet at their lower I I work is fed in the bands of the operator or otherwise in the direction of feed, and this turning action of the groover 1T facilitates the action thereof in forming the dei pression or groove in the surface of the; channel for the reception of the line of stitches or fastenings, and such groover also acts to prevent the operator from accidenproper working position with respect to the said tools, all of which will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art. The channel flap 1'6 having been turned backward, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the groove or depres icn in the surface of the channel havmg been formed by the groover or point. 17.
the shoe S is presented to the fastener inserting means and a line of stitches or fasti-nings 18, as indicated in Fig. 3 serves to unite the sole to the shoe, after which the flap 16, Fig. 3.
formed as described.
Changes in matter of form and relation of parts may obviously be made within the .true tienl of the present invention which i contemplates a backward turning of the! is turned down, the line of i fastenings being sunk into the -groove channel fiap and the simultaneous formation in the surface of the channel of a groove or depression to receive the line of fastenings.
I claim-- 1. In a machine for turning back the channel lip of a boot or shoe sole, the co1nbination of a shaft and operating means therefor, and a wiper or flap turner detaehably connected thereto and comprising a head having downwardly and inwardly concaved ribs extending continuously to the lower extremity of said wiper or lip turner and forming a channel groover, said head having a circular flange portion extending horizontally over the upper portions of the concaved ribs to engage and hold down the top of the channel flap as it turned back by the concaved ribs. tally moving the work transversely out of t 2. In a machine for turnin back the channel lip of a bootor shoe so e, the combination of a wiper or lip turner having lip engaging and turning portions, a channel groover carried by said wiper or lip turner to engage the surface of the channel and form a fastener receiving groove therein, a shaft to which said wiper or lip tan 5;.- is detachably secured. means to permit 'said shaft to yield as the work is pressed against the wiper or lip turner, and means fbr adjusting the yielding action of said means.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
