Description

Patented Jan. 25, 1910.
I/Vi in wow l n um co, PnoYo-mmmruln wumm o n a UNITED STATESEATENT oFFiioE.
NATHANIEL R. MIDDLETON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINATION SHOVEL AND COAL-RECEPTAGLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 4, 1907, Serial No. 391,384. Renewed June 21, 1909. Serial No. 503,496.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL R. M11)- DLETON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combination Shovel and Coal-Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a receptacle de signed to hold coal and provided with a shovel designed especially for use in connection with the receptacle and the object of the invention is to provide a neat, convenient means for holding a supply of coal on hand in a place convenient to the stove, as the receptacle can be placed in a kitchen or store room without taking up more than a minimum amount of space without being open to the usual objections to the ordinary bin.
This invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, the lid being raised and the door open. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the receptacle showing the same closed.
In these drawings A represents the receptacle which is preferably mounted upon suitable rollers and is provided with a handle A so that it can be readily moved from place to place. The-receptacle is also provided with a hinged lid A for convenience in filling. \Vithin the receptacle is a sloping downwardly inclined false bottom B provided with an opening 13 through which the coal can fall to the bottom of the receptacle A and the false bottom B prevents the coal from falling against a pivoted door C of an opening C normally closed by said door. Sliding beneath the false bottom B and through the doorway C is a shovel D constructed in the form of a scoop and provided with a pivoted handle D. Upon one side of the doorway, the front of the casing A is provided with a sleeve E into which the handle D enters when folded as indicatcd in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the said handle being also shown in this position in Fig. 2.
In a receptacle so constructed, a supply of coal can always be kept ready for immediate use and the coal can be removed from the receptacle to the stove without dropping the coal or dirt upon the floor.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A receptacle for coal havinga doorwav formed in one side and slotted adjacent said doorway, a shovel working through said doorway, and a pivoted handle connected to the shovel and adjusted to rest in said slot when the shovel is not in use.
2. A receptacle for coal having an opening formed in one side and having two adjacent sides slotted, one end of said slot communicating with said opening, a shovel working through said opening, and a pivoted handle carried by the shovel and in position to enter said slot when not in use.
NATHANIEL R. MIDDLETON.
