TENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT D. Gnonen, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Tents, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tents and has for its primary object to provide a device of its kind which provides the same amount of floor area with less canvas and which may be set up with a less number of guy ropes than heretofore.
Among further objects are to provide a tent of a given size which may be set up without the use of poles and which can be folded into a smaller package having less weight than as previously constructed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tent when erected, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tent when spread out.
In the drawings A and B represent two sides, C the back, and DD two flaps forming the front, all of which parts combine to form the roof of the tent. lVhcn these parts are in elevated position, the walls of the inclosure converge upward forming an apex E, and the lower edges of the sides, back, and front in shape conform to a square or rectangle. The back of the tent is nearly an equilateral triangle while the two sides are right-angle triangles. The pieces forming the sides, back, and flaps are secured together by means of seams 2 and at or near the lower corners of the sides and back and the lower meeting corners of the flaps perforations 3 admit loops t through which stakes 5 may be driven into the groi'lnd to secure the lower edge of the tent. The apex is provided with a loop 6 which is secured thereto by stitching 7 and through which a rope or cord 8 is passed and thrown over an overhead support such as a linmb of a tree 9 to hold the tent in elevated position, the outer end of said rope being secured by means of a stake 10 in the ground. Buckles 11 are shown attached to the meeting edges of the flaps to hold said flaps closed in the Specification of Letters Patent.

usual manner. then the tent is in elevated position the front wall is in substantially vertical position while the sides and back incline downwardly and outwardly from the apex. A tent of this construction can be quickly and securely set up and will provide more room with less amount of canvas than tents constructed in the ordinary manner.
Two tents employing my invention can be easily erected with their front walls coinciding and in this manner provide double the amount of floor area which is a distinct advantage in army and cruising service.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principle of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A shelter tent consisting of a llat sheet of fabric, in shape an irregular semi-octagon made up of two sections substantially rightangled triangles in shape having similar right-angle edges lying on substantially the same straight .line and constituting the longest side or edge of the sheet, two sections substantially right-angled triangles in shape having similar right-angle edges united to the longest sides of the two first-named sections, and whose own longest sides are united to the side lines of a triangular rear tent section, all the triangular sections having a substantially common apex located near the straight line forming the longest side or edge of the tent sheet.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
