Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE mun. L. NICROLIOH, 0F PIT'IBBURG. PENNESYLVANIA. ASSIGHOR TO WESTINGHO'UHE m0 AND IANUFACTURING COMPAN'L' Av JQBPORATIOH OI PENNBYLVANXA.
IDIED-I-IGULATOR T01 WINDING DOLLI.
Specification e! Lettcra Patent.
I'nt emitted Jun. 215, 1910.
Application and mum as, toot. Serial No. tamer.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAatt ltI. L. Xmnonunit, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania. lmve invented a new and useful lmpmvement in S -Regttlatom for Winding-Rolls. of w ich the following in u apeeiticntion.
My invention rctltea to Jim pt'upuh-iun and o ed regulation of gathering t'eeln or rolls or paper and other material and it.
\ ing reels or rolla in which the virtual di- Jb tem llll ru itnre.
has for its object. to provide memo: that shullbe dependent upon diameter variations, as the material is wound upon a roll, 10:! automatically varying the speed of the m I v In the manufacture of various aheet. materiala, cord, wire, ctc., gathering reels or rolls are employed to receive the material after it has been subjected to such forming and finishing processes as may be necessary or deairable. It will. of course, be readily understood that the linear velocity of the material must be maintained substantially constant antl confletptcntly, that. the speed of the gathering rol must be decreased as its diameter is virtually increased during the gathering process. Under the practice which has heretofore uaually prevailed, friction elutchea have been intcrpoeed'lmtween the gathering roll amt its shaft which permitted the speed at the roll to decrease reason of the pull exerted by the materia as it. pamcd onto the roll.
Accordin to my present invention, I provide a riving motor for the gathering roll the apeed of which in automatically varied ,In accordance with the changes in the vtrtual'dimneter of the roll. By thin meana, the material ia entirely relieved;
from the atraintt to which it was mbjected by the rior method, and thin and delicate l materta a may be wound without. danger of y invention in not mll'lt'lttl to gatherameter in gradually increased but may be i advantageously employed in printing and other am where nuttorjal la anpplied to :1 prevor other meehanmu from a reel or 1 roll the virtual diameter of which gradually decraaaea. I
The aingle figure of the acctanpeuying tlrawitt ia a diagrammat c view of a sysying my Invention.
strip or line 1 of paper or other mate rial is fed over a plurality of rolls 2 for drying or other pur )Ofit'rt uml llll'lhtl! onto a gathering reel or cut 3. The roll 3 is driven by an electric motor 4. having a tield magnct winding 5. which is supplied with energy. from any suitable sottltt'. through limconductora 6 and 7. tield rhcoatot 8 i:- udapted to govern the current supplied to the tichl magnet winding 5 and comprises a l'tHlSltlllCtB t). a plurality of stationary contact membcrs 10 that are connected to end and intermediate points in the rwistaucc.
and a movable contact arm ll. which is mlaptcd to engage the stationary contact members 10.
Movement of the arm It is cti'ct-tctl by a rod I) one end of which in twt'lllttl to the contact arm and the other end of which is provided with an idler roll 13 which is adapted to rest against the surface of the outer layer of material on the gathering roll 3. The center line of the rod 12 lies in a radial plane amt is wrwndicnlar to the surface of the roll. herod l2 is ad'ustublv mounted in thc gnidcwaya 14 am the roll I3 is held in engagement with the surface of the outer layer of material on the gathering roll by a spring If. The motion of the contact arm ll mm preferably be steadied by a dushpot Ill. The nrrangetntmt of parts in such that. an the material is wound onto the reel or roll 3. the rod I2 is life moved upwardly in opposition to the -opring 'material in traveling in the reverse .dircct ion.
no that the roll 8 becomes a supply roll. the decrease in its diameter will weaken the t'tcld of the motor and increase its apccd. Ordinarily. under them conditium, the pull exerted by the nmtcrial itaell' in relied upon to rotate the roll.
It will be rendil understood that the too voltage applied to t e motor armature may be varied tn ocean-dance with the variations in the size of the gathering roll undead off the lield resistance, an shown, and It dramamount of material on the roll for varying the field magnet excitation of the motor.
2. The combination with a winding roll I for material, and an electric driving motor 2 therefor, of automatic means for varying the field magnet excitation of the motor as I the amount of mnterial on the rolls varies.
8. The combination with a windin roll and an clectric'driving motor there or o automatic means for increasing the field magnet excitation of the motor as the diametcr of the material wound upon the roll increases.
4. The combination with a winding roll and on electric drivi motor therefor havmgi field magnet an armature windings en a resistance for the field windin of automatic means for varyi' g the stren th of the motor as the amount of materia on the roll varies.
5. The combination with a winding roll, and an electric drivin motor therefor havm field magnet an armature windings. an a resistance for the field winding, of automatic means do dent upon the increaee in diameter 0 the roll, as materiel is wound thereon, for strengthening the field of the motor.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 'aubscribcd my name this lttth day of March,
H. L. NICHOLSON. Witnesses:
it. S. Fsluu'r, E-Lmunr Hmm.
