To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL LEIIMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tent-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a folding tent bed and has for its object to provide a tent bed for campers, prospectors, soldiers and the like, Which, when it is set up, forms a bed that is raised above the ground and that is completely covered by an inclosing tent, so as to protect the sleeper from the weather and from insects, and which can be collapsed and folded up into small compass and into a convenient shape for transportation.

A principal object of the invention, to be more particular, is to provide a tent bed of this sort in which the bed section and the tent section and legs constitute together a single, integral structure of which the folding or collapsing parts are so related to each other that the device may be folded longitudinally into a relatively thin, narrow parcel without the detachment of the parts and by simple manipulations that can be quickly and easily effected.

The character of the device is such that it may also, in time of need, be used as a stretcher.

The invention has for other objects such new and improved constructions in tent beds and the like as will be described in the following specification and particularly set forth in the claims appended thereto.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tent bed set up. Referring to the drawings, the bed section, as I have termed it, consists of the side rails 15, to which is secured a strip 16 of some strong fabric, such as canvas, to form the bed bottom.

oupporting devices are provided lor the side rails which preferably may be collapsed and also folded against the bed section. I have shown at each end of the device a pair of legs which are pivoted together. These legs may be of any construction to effect the desired result. Leg 17 is shown as consisting of a single piece of wood hinged by the plates 18 to one of the side rails, the plates being pivoted to the latter at '19. The other leg consists of two pieces of wood 20, 21, connected by the curved straps 22 in such a way as to leave a space in which is pivoted by bolt 23 the other leg 17. The upper part 20 of the two-part, leg is hinged to its side rail by means of hinge plates 18, identical with those referred to. A hook let is attached to one of the legs so as to hook into a staple 25 on the other. By this arrangement the legs may be folded up against the bed section and then collapsed in the manner to be described hereafter.

The tent consists of a fabric cover 26 of any suitable size and shape, which is securely and pernlanently attached to the side rails 15, at the sides of the device, and to the fabric bed bottom at the ends. The cover is formed on each side with an opening, these openings being closed by flaps 27, which may be provided with eyelets 28 for buttoning the llaps to the carriage buttons 22 on the side bars. If desired, the tent may have only one opening and llap. This covering with its (laps constitutes a complete tent or housing over the bed which Above the [laps are straps 30 having eyelets 31, and hooks 32, so that the llaps may be held rolled up, as indicated in Fig. l by the dotted line 33.

For supporting the cover or tent I provide supporting devices which I shall ter'm hoops, intending by that term any sort of bowed support extending from one side of the bed to the other. These devices are so constructed and so connected with the bed that when they are set up their engagement with the bed and with the cover puts the cover under tension, which holds the supports from accidental displacement. The hoops are also so constructed and connected with the bed that they may be folded down upon the bed and also folded with the bed when it is collapsed longitudinally. I have shown one of these hoops at each end of the device. The hoop consists of the upright or side rods 34:, provided with rings 35 at their lower ends, which rings extend over guide rods 36, there being one of these at each corner of the bed; and of the diagonally placed or roof supporting rods 37, which are hinged to rods 34 and at their other ends are provided with rings 88 or other means for hinging them together. I have shown two suitable ways of constructing the hinge between rods 34 and rods 37. One form is shown 'in Figs. 9 and 10. Rod 3% has secured to its upper end the sleeve 89, in which is pivoted the bent end 40 of rod 37, the sleeve having a slot on its inner face to allow the turning of rod 37. The full line position (Fig. 9) is the position which the roof supports 37 take when the tent bed is set up. The dotted line position shows the position of the parts when the hoop is collapsed for packing.

Another form of hinge is illustrated in Figs. 11 and 1:2. The upright rod 41 is formed with a loop or ring 42, in which seats the inturned end 43 of a loop 4A on the roof supporting rod 45. In this case also the full line position shows the normal supporting position of the hoop and the dotted line position its collapsed arrangement. The end of loop at abutting against rod 41 prevents the roof supporting rod from turning too far. The hoopsare preferably so connected with the bed that when they are set up they put the cover under sufficient tension to prevent the accidental displacement of the parts, the arrangement being such, however, that the hoops may be folded down and the tent section collapsed without detaching any part of the device. By means of the rings 35, it will be seen, the hoops slide on the guides 86. When at the inner ends of the guides, the hoops stand, preferably, at a slight inclination from the vertical, as shown, thus putting the cover or tent under some tension. This tension is relieved when the hoops are slid back on the guides and the guides are preferably provided with the offsets l6 to allow the easy turning of the rings when the hoops are folded down upon the bed bottom. If desired, the spaces between the guide rods 36 and the side rails may be small enough so that there is a little friction between the rings 35 and the side rails, which will also hinder the accidental slipping back of the hoops.

In order to brace the portions of the cover at the sides of the flaps, diagonal braces 47 may be used, these braces being slidable on rods 8st, as, for example, by being provided with the rings 48, which abut against stop pins 49 on rods 34. The upper ends of the braces are preferably bent over, as at 50, and secured to the cover 26. The rods 3% may be sewed to the cover 51 and the rods 37 at 52.

I preferably provide a removable ridge pole consisting of a stick and having its ends grooved at at and which may be placed between the hoops when the tent bed has been set up. It is not absolutely essential to use this ridge pole, but it is desirable to do so, as it serves as a strut for the upper end of the hoopsand also supports the covering between the same. The grooved ends of the pole 53 engage with the rings at the upper end of rods 87.

The operation of the tent bed, when constructed as above described, is as follows: Supposing the device to be set up as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in order to collapse it for transportation the ridge pole, when that is used, is first taken out and then the hoops supporting the covering are pushed back to the outer ends of guides 36 and are then tion, legs and collapsed tent section, can A thereupon be collapsed or folded longitudinally. In this way the cover and its supports can be neatly packed away within a sort of sack formed by the fabric bed bottom. The legs may then be folded up, so that the collapsed tent bed takes the shape shown in Figs. 6 and 7. To set up the tent bed, this operation is reversed.

It will be seen that the device constitutes a single, integral structure (with the exception of the rit ge pole, which may or may not be used). It may be unfolded or folded up by a very simple manipulation of the parts and without the necessity of making any detachments. There are no small, loose parts to become lost. The device, when folded up, makes a long, thin parcel which will easily go into a wagon or a boat and in which the slack of the cover and the more described, as modifications might be devised Z which would come within my invention as defined by the claims herein. the parts have been described. as made of Wood. The whole structure could be of metal, if desired.

lVhile the device is intended to be used particularly as a bed, it could be used also as a stretcher, in which case the handles mt may be provided, which handles as shown are merely continuations of the side bar. I t is optional to construct the device with handles or not.

I claim:

1. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover attached to the ends and sides of the bed section, and supports for the cover, said tent section being connected to the bed section so that it folds down upon the same and said bed and tent sections, when the former is folded down upon the latter, being fold able longitudinally.

2. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a tent section comprisii'lg a cover and supports for the same which are movably but non detachably connected with the bed section, said supports being foldable down upon the bed section, and said sections being foldable longitudinally of the bed section.

3. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover, and supports for the cover at: each end of the bed, said supports being slidably connected with the bed section, whereby they may be folded down upon the bed section or set up so as to support the cover, said tent section and bed section being foldable longitudinally of the bed.

4. In a tent bed, the combination with a folding bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover attached to the bed section, and supporting devices for the cover, said supporting devices being mo ably connected with the bed section so that they may be set up to support the cover or folded down upon the bed section, and being also themselves collaspible so as to fold with the bed section Without detachment therefrom.

5. In a tent bed, the combination with a Certain of z bed section, of a cover secured to the bed section, supporting hoops for the cover having rings on their lower ends, guides on the bed section for said rings, and means on said guides constituting, with said rings, hinges whereby the hoops may be folded down on the bed section.

7. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a cover secured to the bed section, supporting hoops for the cover having rings on their lower ends, and guides on the bed section for said rings, said guides provided with off-sets, substantially as and for the purpose described.

8. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section which is foldable longitudinally, of a cover secured to the bed section, supporting hoops for said cover, and guides with which said hoops are slidably connected, said hoops being foldable upon the bed, aml being also foldable limgitutlinally therewith.

9. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover secured to the bed, supporting hoops for the cover, one at each end of the bed section, which hoops are foldable upon the bed. and which when set up engage the cover and a ridge pole adapted to be put in place between the hoops when the device is set up, said bed section and hoops being foldable together when the hoops are folded down upon the bed.

10. In a tent bed, the combination with a longitudinally foldable bed section, of a tent section con'iprising a cover, and hoops, one at each end of the bed section which support the cover and are foldable upon the bed section, said hoops being hinged at their middle points.

11. In a tent bed, the combination with a longitlulinally foldable bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover, and hoops, one at each end of the bed section which support the cover and are foldable upon the bed section, said hoops being hinged at their middle points by universal joints, and at points on each side of their middle points.

12. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover, and supporting hoops for the same. said hoops consisting of side rods and roof supporting rods hinged to the side rods, and hinged to each other by universal joints, said side rods being foldably connected with i the bed bottom.

15. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover, and hoops at each end of the bed engaging the cover, and movably connected with the bed section, said supports being foldable down upon the bed, and longitudinally, and braces for the sides of the cover, which are slidably mounted 011 the supports.

16. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover and cover supports, said supports comprising two rods, one of said rods formed with a ring, the other of said supports provided with a loop having an inturned end which seats in the ring of the other member, said loop forming a stop which abuts the other member so as to limit the pivoted movement of one member upon the other.

17. In a tent bed, the combination with a bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover attached at the edges to the bed section, and foldable supporting devices for the cover which are connected to the cover and have slidable connection with the bed section lengthwise thereof, whereby the lower ends of said supporting devices may at will be swung to a position to brace said supports against the extended cover so as to support the same, or in the opposite direction so as to collapse with .the cover.

18. In a tent bed, the combination with a foldable bed section, of a tent section comprising a cover attached at the edges to the bed section, and supporting devices for the cover which are connected with the cover and are slidably connected with the bed, said supporting devices being foldable down upon the bed section and being foldable with the bed section.

19. The combination with a bottom section, of a cover secured thereto, and cover supports hinged to the bottom section and arranged to be held in upright position by the tension on the cover resulting from the raising of said supports to upright position.

20. The combination with a bottom section, of a cover secured thereto, and cover supports hinged to the bottom section and arranged to be held in upright position by the tension on the cover resulting from the raising of said supports to upright position, said supports, cover and bottom section being foldable lengthwise of said bottom section.

21. The combination with a bottom section, of a cover secured thereto, and cover supports having a pivotal connection to the bottom section and slidable lengthwise thereof, whereby in one position said cover supports will be diagonally braced against said cover so as to be held in upright position by the tension on the cover resulting from the raising of said supports to upright position and in another position said supports will collapse with said cover upon said bottom section.

22. The combination with a bottom section, of a cover secured thereto, said cover comprising a top portion and end walls extending outwardly and downwardly in opposite directions from said top portion, and cover supports pivotally connected with the bottom section and arranged to be at will folded down upon the bottom section or swung up into engagement with the cover at the angles between the end walls and the top of said cover and to be held in such position by the resulting tension on the cover.

23. The combination with a bottom section, of a cover secured thereto and comprising a top and end walls extending diagonally downward and outward from said top in opposite directions, and cover supports pivotally secured to the bottom section and slidable at their lower ends lengthwise of the bottom section, whereby the upper ends of said cover supports may be raised into engagement with the cover at the angles between the top and end walls thereof and the lower ends of said supports may be moved lengthwise of the bottom section, so that at will said supports will. either be diagonally braced against said cover so as to be held in upright position by the resulting tension on said cover or may be folded upon said bot tom section with said cover.

24. The combination with a longitudinally foldable bottom section, of cover supports which are transversely foldable relative to the bottom section and also longitudinally foldable with respect thereto connected with said bottom section, and means for holding said cover supports in upright position when said bot-tom section is extended.

25. The combination with a bottom section, of a cover attached thereto, cover supports arranged to engage the cover at substantially fixed points when the structure is extended, and means for connecting the lower ends of the cover supports at different points lengthwise of the bottom section.

26. The combination with a longitudinally foldable bottom section, of a cover attached thereto, and cover supports connected with said bottom section so as to be foldable lengthwise upon said bottom section and transversely therewith. Y
