application nledl March 6, 1922. Serial No. t1,356.
To all ywhom it may concern;
Be it known that l, .losnrn Hourtin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new .and useful Improvements in a Camp lCot, of which the cation.
'lhe invention relates to camp beds and more particularly folding cots which are adapted to he readily transported 1n a pack strapped on the back of a person using the saine.
rlhe primary object of the invention 1s to provide a foldable cot which is simple in construction and readily assembled, and` 1s provided with screened sides and a rainproof covering.
Ai further object is to provide a foldable camp cot in which the various elements are so constructed and arranged as to be readily assembled or disassembled.
TVith these and such other objects in v iew as will be apparent from the description, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which 'Figure 1 is a perspective of' the cot in assembled position;
Figure 2, a vertical longitudinal section therethrough;'
Figure 3, a detail illustration of a ina-nner of attaching the canvas top;
Figure 4, a horizontal section on the line @d of Figure 2;
Figure 5,. a vertical transverse section vthrough the assembled cot;
Figure 6, an elevation illustrating the manner of folding the cot body;
Figure 7, an end elevation of the completely folded cot; and
Figure 8, a detail section illustrating the manner of supporting the side screens.
ln detail, the invention comprises rectangular frame 1, hinged at its center on opposite sides by means of the hinges 2 arranged on the bottom thereof and provided at opposite ends with standards 3 pivoted to the frame at their upper ends and connected by means of transverse rods a. rl`hese vstandards are provided with guiding and brace rods 5 slotted longitudinally to engage over pins 6 carried by the inner sides of the frame 1 whereby the standards following is a specin-- may be swung upwardly and into position within the frame 1, as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 6.
Secured to the opposite ends of the frame 1 are anchor plates 7 which are perforated at spaced intervals to receive suitable springs .8 connected at their inner ends in supported relation with a mattress member 9 constructed of heavy canvas or any other suitable material which may4 be readily folded. rlhe end bars of the frame 1 are constructed to carry thereon end wall meinbers 10 each comprising a rectangular frame having a screen covering 11 and pivo-ted so as to swing inwardly of the cot by means of hinges 12 on end bars of the main frame 1. Each end wall 10 carries a substantially triangular shaped upwardly extending framework 13 liingedly connected at the bottom tothe upper bar of the frame 10 by means of hinges 14:,.so as to swing outwardly of the'end walls 10 when disposed 'in folded position, and when in assembled position to extend upwardly supported on and in alignment with the end walls 10. rllhe apex of each triangular member 13 carries a socket 15 for the reception of a ridge pole 16 formed of two hingedly. connected sections, the hinge 17 thereof being disposed on the under side ofthe pole, whereby when in assembled position the pole will be rigidly supported in the sockets 15 and extend lorigitudinally of the cot.
e triangular frame members 13 are covered by canvas 1.8 or any other suitable fabric, and the end wall members 10 are provided with canvas rolls 19 secured by an upper ange 20 to the upper bar of the end wall frame on the exterior of the cot, whereby the rolls may be lowered to completely enclose the ends of the cot. Spring clip members 21 are carried at each side of the end wall frames to receive thereunder the free sides of the canvas roll 19 when in lowered position, whereby the same will be held securely in place.
rllhe side walls of the cot are formed of screened frame sections 22 hingedly connected at the middle ,portion of the cot by means of the interior hinges 23 whereby the sections may be folded upon one another when in disassembled position. The interior faces of the upper portions of the side bars comprising the end Wall frames l0, are provided with 'vertical slots or' sockets 23 which are adapted to receive pins 24 carried by the conslsting of a tarpaulin 25 adapted tobe positioned ov'er the ridge pole 16 and provide, at'each side, depending side flaps 26 which normally are rolled up and secured by means of snap fastening straps 27 on the ex- 'terior face of the side walls 22. The ends of the tarpaulin 25 are provided with flaps 28 `adapted to close over the triangular end frames 13 along the middle portion thereof and to be secured in place by means of snap fasteners 29 carried on the respective Hap portions. f
When in disassembled and packed posltion, the cot occupies the position as illustrated in Figure 7, in which the various members are secured together by an exterior strap 30 passed therearound. When it is desired to set up the cot, the main frame 1 is placed in position with the supports 3 extended as il-A lustrated in Figure 2, and the end walls are then swung outwardly, as best shown inl Figure 6, and the ridge pole 16 placed in position in the sockets 15 whereby the end walls and `upper frame members will be securely braced and retained in position. The side walls 22 are then mounted on the cot by inserting the pins 24 in the slots 23 and swinging the walls inwardly to rest on the upper portion of the cot frame 1. The tarpaulin cover 25 is then secured in position and the cot is ready for use. The canvas rolls 19 covering the end walls 10 are secured in pla-ce by means of snap fasteners extendingacross the upper bar of the wall frame, and all fastening connections of the canvas atwhatsoever points are made by any suitable type of snap fastener permitting the ready application of the cover.
While I have illustrated and described certain details and materials which enter into the construction and operation of my invention, I desire it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to these, but that any such may be used as will' fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim: y
1. A foldable camp cot comprising a main frame, standards therefor, adapted to be folded beneath said frame, end walls hin edly connected to said frame, side wal s adapted to be positioned on said frame, means for pivotal connection between said end wallsand side walls when in assembled position, hingedly connected triangular wall sections carried at thel top of said end walls, a ridge pole adapted to be supported between the apexes of said triangular sections for maintaining said end walls and sections in operative upright position, and a cover adapted to be supported by said ridge pole and extending over said cot in its entirety.
2. In a foldable camp cot, the combination of a main frame formed of two hingedly connected sections, supports therefor adapted to be folded beneath said sections at each end of the frame, end walls hingedly connected to the ends of said frame, uprights hingedly connected to the upper portion of said end walls, a ridge [pole formed of hingedly connected sections adapted to be positioned longitudinally of the cot between said triangular sections to maintain said triangular sections and end walls in raised position, sidewalls formed of hingedly connected sections adapted to be pivotally supported on the sides of said main frame between said end walls, and a cover for said cot adapted to be positioned over said ridge pole and supported thereon.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
