The spool 20 is mounted on a collar 31 which is rigidly mounted on the righthand end of the shaft 24 where said shaft projects beyond the frame 18, said collar, in effect, constituting a part of the shaft. The s ool 21 is -detachahly mounted in the mac ine by means of a spring-pressed puppet 3? which is'slidably mounted in a racket 34 dependin from the top plate. Said dog lies in a, slot 38 cut diametricallv of the shaftrand collar and cut in endwise of said shaft-'and collar `from the righthand end thereof. The dog 3S is shown in Figs. 1 and 3 engaging the spool 20 but by rocltino' it about its pivot 37 it can be made to release said spoo 2x1 and to enga e the spool 21 and it is by rocking this dog rom one of the ositions to the other that the direction of 'eed is reversed. The dog 3G projects beyond the sleeve 3l onl both sides thereof as shown iii the drawings. The end of said do opposite' the spool-engaging end thereo terminates in a t1 ip iig device having the forni of a pin -fl-Q having a grooved roller 41 mounted thereon. 1 his roller is engaged by a plate spring 42 which is' secured to one side of the sleeve 31 by means' of a pair of screws 43. The free end of the spring 42 is bent toward the roller 41 and is pointed as shown iii Fifr. 5` at 44. This pointed end of the spring dies in a peripheral roove in the roller 41 and prevents said ro Ier roxn'fallingoff of the pin 40. The point 44 is midway of the two shifted positions of the roller 41.` pointed s ring is adapted to hold said roller and the og 3G in eit er of its' shifted positions an'd to press said dog with 'a sight spring pressure against whichever one of the ribbon spools is being driven. AThe frame 57, 58 is controlled by a spring G0 which acts in the same manner as the spring 55. The two frames are spaced apart on the rod 51 by means of a collar 61.
In Fig. 4 the general position of the spools 20 and'21 is indicated by broken lines and it will be seen that the follower arms 58, 5S, pome between the flanges of the res )ective spools and that the cams 45 and 46 he between the spoolsthemselves. Each of said cams consists ofan ear beiitoff from the respective arms 52, 57 and made on an incline or bevel.- lVhen the ribbon is substantiallyf; exhausted from either of the spools the correspondinv follower 53, 58 will have been moved up by its spring 55, 60 to such a position that the corresponding cam 45, 46 will have moved into the path of the pin 40. Said piii engaging saidcam will' be moved toward the right or toward the left as the ,case may be, throwing the spool-engaging end.of the dog iii the opposite direction. The cum 45 is adapted-to push the pin 40 away from the spool 20 and 'this acts to. force the engaging end of the dog into engagement with said spool 2O and a similar thing is true ofthe cam 4G. It will be noted in Fig. 4 that one of these 'cams stands in advance of the otherso that there is no interference between the two cams. In order to prevent the cams from` moving too high when the Aspool 21 is removed from the machine, an arm G2 projects from one of the ears of thed frame comprising the cam 46 and follower 58, and said arniis adapted to strike the rod 5G and thus limit the upward motion of said cam and follower. An arm or ear is bent oli from the arm 5T and lies above the arm 52v of the cam 45 and holds said cam down when the follower 5S is held down. These features, however, are not of my invention.
In orderto reverse the direction of ribbon feed by hand the shaft 24 is formed with a longitudinal roove in which lies a wire 64 which exten s nearly the entire length of the shaft; At its inner end this wire profjects into' the slot 38 wheret is bent up as shown` at ('5 -into a notch 66 formed inV the dog 36. The outer end of the wire (54 is bent outward as shown at G7 where it enters a suitable hole in a collar G8 loosely mounted on the shaft 24 and having a milled head. The dog 36 can be shifted to either of its two positions by sliding 4this collar by hand to the right or to the left as the case may be.
In the application of Alexander T. Brown 'hereinbefore referred to, two ribbon spools shown herein and they are enga ed y a4 pivoteddog adapted to be shifte Vinto enagement with either spool. This dog was, owever, pivoted on the`outside of the sleeve isr :sc ,that when the ribbon was which corresponded to the'l sleeve 31 in the present case, and said sleeve had to be squared or liattened for this .purposa The roller Vwhich corresponded to the roller 41 was on the wheel-engaging end of the dog exhausted from one of the spools the cam controlled bythat "spool had to pull the follower toward the to accomplish this ,the cams4 spool. yIn order were made in a form that was much less Vconvenient to manufacture thanthat shown in the present case and a form in which said cams werel not asrigid as those shown in the present case. The present construction is simpler to manufacture, is more rigid and positive in its action and is in several vrespects an improvement over that shown in the Brown application.
Various changes can tails of construction and arrangement without departing from my'invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: a
1. In a' typewriting machineand in ribbon mechanism, 4the combination of two ribbon spools arranged side by side, a driving shaft coaxial with said spools, 'a dog piv otally mounted on said driving shaft between said spools and shiftableiabout'i'ts pivot into engagement with -either spool, said dog consistingof a lever ofthe first order having one'of its ends formed to enga e the ribbon spools and having a tripping evice at the other end `the ribbon on said spools and arranged to come intothe path of said tripping device when the ribbon is substantially exhausted from one of the spools, cach of said canis being arranged to p .ish said tripping device away from the corresponding spool and thus to throw the spool-actuating end of the dog into engagement with Said corresponding spool.
