SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4=15,529, dated November 19, 1889. Application filed October 11 1886. Renewed June 22, 1889. Serial No. 315,145. (No model.)
Be it known that I, GODFREY I'I. LASAR, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have im'ented a certain new anduseful Improvement in Type IVriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improvement. is a detail section the ribbon-spool. Fig. 7 taken on line 7 7, Fig. 3. l p This invention relates to an improvement in ribbon-holders for type-writers; and itconsists in features of novelty, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
. Referring to the drawings, A represents the paper-roller of a type-writer carriage.
B represents an. upper ribbon-spool and C a lower ribbon-spool, which are supported 011 shafts BC, respectively j ournaled in a frame D, which is in practice secured to the frame of the type-writer. The upper .end of the frame D has extensions D, that extend in an upwardly direction toward the rollerA of the carriage. At the upper ends D of these extensions are journaled rollers D over which the ribbon passes, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. Hinged to one of these ends at E (see Fig. 4) is an arm E, to the forward end of which are journaled rollers F, around the outerone of which and beneath the inner one of which the ribbon passes, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The rollers F and D are provided with end flanges G to prevent the displacement of the ribbon on the rollers. The arm E extends over the roller A of the carriage and holds the ribbon in printing position with relation to the roller; but the arm may, when desired, be thrown up to expose the roller and the printing, as shown in Fig. 4, by simply pressing ona horn or projection E with which it is provided. The downward movement of the arm E is limited by a pin E thereon coming against a projection 13 on 5 one of the ends'D of an extension D of the jfranie D, and the upward movement of the arm is limited by a pin E coming against an extension of the frame, as shown in Fig. 4. The arm E .is pivoted to an end D of an exite'n'sion of the frame D by'being secured to one of the .journals of the inner roller D the iother journal of this roller being extended, Eas shown at D, to receive a coil-spring D ione end of which is secured to the extension 5D at D and the other end of which is segcured to an end of an extension of the frame 1D. The action of thisspring is to hold t-he iarm E in its lower position, except when ,raised by pressure being applied to the horn E as described. *ith this arrangement for supporting the ribbon, a double thickness of ibbon is provided, through which the print- ?ing is done over the roller A. i The ribbon is secured at one end to the ';spool B and at theother end to the spool C, jand is wound from one spool onto the other, the spool 13 being turned when the ribbon is bein g wound onto that spool bya dog or pawl I engaginga ratchet-disk I, secured to the shaft 13', the lower end of the dog or pawl befing connected to one end of a key-lever I pivoted at I to the lower end of the frame D Yand provided at its other end with a key. 1*, Eby which it may be operated to shift the ribbon, or the lever Pmay be connected by a link I, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) extending down and connected to a bar or rod (not shown) extendingbeneath the key-levers of the machine, and with this latter arrangement the ribbon would be shifted each time a key-lever was operated. The dog or pawl I is held into engagement with the ratchetwheel I by means of a spring 1, connecting it to the frame D, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. hen the ribbon is to be wound 01f the spool 13 onto the spool G, a sliding dog J, adj ustable on the dog I, is moved down into engagement with the ratchet-disk J on the shaft O of the spool O. This forces the dog I outward, causes it to bear on the lower disk, and removes the upper end of the dog I from engagement with the ratchet-wheel I, owing to the dog J wedging between the dogI and the ratchet-disk J, and being near t th pivot I of the dog I than the upper end of the dog.
Thus when the lever I is operated the spool 0 instead of the spool B will be turned, reversing the movement of the ribbon.
The shafts B O fit at one end in notches M of the frame D, being made in opposite sides of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2. They are held in these notches by a spring-brake plate N, pivoted at N to the frame I) and provided with a handle N which engages a ratchet-bar N 3 on the frame D. The outer ends of the plate N are curved and bear against opposite sides of hubs O O, secured, respectively, to the shafts B C, and by adj usting the lever N 2 the pressure of the plate N upon the hubs may be increased or diminished to regulate the tension of the spools B C and allow them to move With more or less freedom, the plate being. held to any adj 11stment by the lever N engaging the ratchetbar N Thus the plate N serves the double purpose or function of holding the shafts B O to the frame and as a regulator to provide more or less tension for the spools. By simply moving the plate into the position shown in Fig. 2 the spools may be inserted or removed.
The shafts B C are made sufficiently long to permit of the spools being moved laterally to change the printing-surface of the ribbon, or to shift the ribbon, so that the type'will strike another part of it. v
I claim as my inventionpaper-roller and a frame having ribbon-spools, the ribbon-guides on the frame, the arm hinged to the frame and extending therefrom over the paper-roller transverse of the latter, ribbon-guides on the arm, and a ribbon extending from a spool over the guides on the frame, under the inner guide of the arm, between the guides on the latter, over the outer guide of the arm, under the guides of the latter, over the inner guide of the frame, and between the guides of the latter to the other spool.
2. In a type-writer, the combination of the frame, spools journaled in the frame, rollers journaled in the upper end of the frame, arm
provided with pins and hinged to the upper end of the frame, the pins acting to limit the movement of the arm, paper-roller over which the arm extends, rollers secured to the forward end of the arm, and spring for holding the armin its lower position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a type-Writer, the combination of the spools, frame in which the spools are journaled having upwardly-inclined extensions, rollers journaled in the upper end of the frame, arm hinged to one journal of one of the rollers, springs secured to the frame and to the other journal of said roller, projection E, and pins E E on said arm and roller secured to the outer end of said arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a type-writer, the combination of the slotted frame, spools the journals of which fit in the slots of the frame, hubs on the spools, and pivoted plate bearing against the hubs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 5. In a type-Writer, the combination of the slotted frame, spools located in the frame, the journals of which fit at one end in the slots of the frame, hubs on the shafts of the spools, plate pivoted to the frame, lever secured to the plate, and ratchet-bar for holding the plate to any adjustment, substantially as and for 'the purpose set forth.
6. In a type-Writer, in combination with the frame and spools one above the other, ratchetwheels secured to the shafts of the spools, 1. In a type-Writer, in combination with a;
dogs for engaging the ratchet-wheels, and lever by which the dogs are moved, the lower dog sliding on the upper dog, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a type-writer, in combination with a frame, and ribbon, spools, and rollers, the ratchet-wheels secured to the shafts of the spools, spring-dog I, sliding dog J, adjustable on the spring-dog, and mechanism for operating the dog, substantially as set forth- GODFREY H. LASAR.
