Description
H M SGIPLE BURGLAR ALARM. APPLICATION FILED MAY 9,1908. I
Patented Jan. 18,1910.
UNITED STATES FFICE.
HENRY M. SCIPLE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
BURGLAR-ALAR'M.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. ScIrLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll linneapolis, in the county of I'Iennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar-.-\larms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in burglar alarms especially adapted to be attached to doors or windows and to be discharged by the act 01"; opening a door or window from the outside and the said invention consists in the construction, combimn tion and arrangement of devices. hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is an elevation of a burglar alarm constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same attached to a door jamb, a portion of the jamb and Ya portion of the door being indicated in section and the firing barof the device being shown in initial position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the firing bar being shown in firing position. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
The base 1 of my improved burglar alarm is a plate of oblong rectangular form having its outer end turned at right angles to form an end wall 2 and provided on one side with a longitudinally disposed side wall 3which is turned at right angles to said plate. A guide lug 4 is formed integrally with the said plate and is turned to a position at right angles thereto, said guide lug being cut from said plate and forming an opening 5 in the latter.' At the inner end of the said base plate are poiutsG which are cut and turned therefrom and are integral therewith, the said points being adapted to be embedded in one side of a door jamb a or in a window sash or window casing to enable the said plate to be attached to a door -frame or Window and it is evident that the said plate may be attached to a door frame or window at any suitable point. On one side of the said base plate at a suitable distance from the inner end thereof is a cartridge receiving chamber formed in a block 7 which is here shown as attached to the said base plate by means of rivets or similar devices 8 which pass through openings in side flanges 9 with which said block is provided and in the said base plate. -The bore or cartridge receiving chamber of the block 7 is oblique to the base plate 1, extending through the 4 same and'hence causes the cartridge when Specification of Letters Patent.

exploded to be discharged out through the opening formed by the door or window as will be apparent from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, thus avoiding danger of setting tire to the building when the cartridge is exploded.
A longitudinally movable firing rod 10 operates in guide openings in the wall 2 and lug 4' and has its inner endpointed as at 11 and is provided at its outer end with a ring or linger piece 12. A pin 13 projects from one side of said tiring rod and on the latter, between the' said pin and the wall 2, is a spring 1 1 which is compressed when the firing rod is drawn outwardly as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The pin 13 when the firing rod is thus drawn outwardly is engaged with a shoulder 15 with 'which'the said wall 3 is provided and serves to hold the firing rod in normal position, against the tension of the spring 14. A trigger 16 is provided which is pivotally mounted on the side 'wall 3 as at 17, has an arm 18 to engage the stop pin 13 and is further provided with an arm 19 which is disposed in the path of the door 1). or other movable device which must be opened to enable an entrance to .be etiected into the house.
Assuming that the cartridge has been placed in the cartridge chamber and the device set as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, any at tempt to open the door b will cause the same to engage the trigger 16, as shown in Fig. 2, cause such trigger to trip the stop pin 18 and hence release the firing rod, whereupon the spring 14 exerts its tension to drive the fir- The herein described burglar alarm comprising a base plate struck .up to form a.
side wall, an end wall, a guide lug and attaching points, said attaching points being at the opposite end of the base plate from the end wall, said end wall, side wall, guide lug and attaching points extending from the same side of the base plate and said side Wall having a stop notch, a cartridge receiv-
