Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. Down, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Rotary Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a rotary press to be used to compress material, and at the same time draw off the liquid squeezed from said material.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and durable device which will compress material efticiently and rapidly, and draw off the liquid exuded from the material, in a convenient and thorough manner.
Generally speaking, the invention consists in a perforated cylinder having reciprocating compressing blades adapted to rotate in a perforated casing, combined with the con struction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line 1-1 in Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a side View in elevation, showing one end of the casing removed; Fig. 4; is a partial view showing the end of the casing removed as in Fig. 3, looking at it from the inside; Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the sliding bar used to reciprocate the compressing blades. Referring to the parts of the device, 1 indicates a casing of any suitable material, which is supported in any suitable manner on a foundation 2, as by means of legs 3. At the top of the casing 1, there is provided an inlet opening 6, which forms a hopper for the material to be fed to the press.
Directly below the hopper inlet 6, there is provided an enlargement 7 in the casing, which is in the form of a hollow cylinder that is perforated on its under surface to provide means whereby the liquid in the material to be compressed may drain off.
The casing 1 is open at both sides, and these openings are closed by suitable heads 8 and 9, which are secured in any suitable manner to the casing, and which have openings at the center thereof, to provide bearings for trunnions 10 and 11 on a shaft 12. The shaft 12 may be driven by any suitable means, not shown, and has secured thereto within the casing 1 a rotatable cylinder 13, which is perforated similarly to the bottom of the casing, to allow the liquid in the material being compressed to pass within the cylinder.
At each end of the cylinder 13, there are provided port openings 1st, which permit the liquid drained from the material to pass from within the cylinder to suitable drain passages or by-passes 15 in the heads 8 and 9.
In order to catch the liquid drained from the cylinder 13 and the casing 7, there is provided a suitable outer casing 16, which surrounds the casing 7 and is suitably secured thereto. The bottom of the casing 16 slopes downward to an intermediate point, where it is suitably connected to a drainpipe 17.
The cylinder 13 is provided with circular flange ends 18, which are adapted to slide next to the heads 8 and 9 in an enlargement in the casing 1, as at 19. There are provided in the flanges 18, at suitable intervals, slots 20, which coincide with slots 21 in the cylinder proper, and are for the purpose of guiding a plurality of reciprocable blades 22. The outer ends of the blades 22 are preferably pointed, and have extending therefrom suitable lugs 23, which are adapted to rotatably engage curved segmental sliding bars 24, the latter being adapted to slidingly rotate in a circular groove 25, formed on the inner faces of the heads 8 and 9. The circular groove 25 conforms to the curve of the casing 7, and is eccentrically located with respect to the cylinder 13, so that, by the rotation of the cylinder, the curved bars 2 1 follow in the groove and reciprocate the blades 22 connected thereto, in their slots 21.
In case any material should be too large to properly enter between the casing 7 and the cylinder 13, there is provided at the bottom of the hopper inlet 6 a suitable shearing knife 26, which is secured to the casing 1 in any suitable manner. The cylinder 13 sometimes accumulates material on its outer surface, and in order to remove this, there is provided a scraper 27, which is secured in any suitable manner to the casing 1 at the side farthest from the curved portion 7 of the casin ting material, co-aeting members eccen- Extending from the enlarged portion 7 of the casing in a substantially horizontal direction, there is provided an outlet '28, through which the pressed material is forced. Coacting with the outlet 28, there is provided a suitable means to further compress the material, and this consists in a gate 29, which is suitably pivoted to the casing, as at 30, and has connected thereto a weighted lever 31, which yieldingly forces the gate against the upper surface of the material flowing through the outlet 28. The side walls of the outlet 28 extend inwardly, as at 32 in Figs. 2 and 5, and wipe along the inner sides of the flanges 18 on the cylinder 13. This is for the purpose of preventing the liquid in the saturated material above the cylinder from passing into the squeezed material below the cylinder and in the outlet.
In the operation of the device, the 1naterial is fed into the hopper inlet 6, where it passes, after the large lumps have been severed by the knife 26, under action of the reciprocating blades 22 on the cylinder 13. These blades gradually extend as the cylinder rotates, and squeeze thematerial between the cylinder and the enlarged portion 7 of the casing, carrying it around with them until it comes to the constricted neck directly below the cylinder. The material is forced to pass through the constricted neck, squeezing out the last particles of moisture, and is forced onward by the succeeding material into the outlet 28, where it comes under the action of the weighted gate 29, which further compresses the material. The liquid pressed from the material may pass out through the bottom of the casing through the perforations, or may pass into the cylinder, and thus out through the by-passes 15 down into the drain-pipe 17.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a rotary press, the combination with a casing open at both sides, of a pair of heads adapted to close said openings, said heads having circular grooves therein, a perforated rotatable cylinder eccentrically supported in said heads with respect to said grooves, by-passes in said heads adapted to drain a liquid from said cylinder, blades on said cylinder, and means adapted to co-act with said circular grooves to reciprocate said blades.
2. In a rotary press, the combination with a support, of shearing mechanism for cuttrically located with respect to each other, one of said members being movable relative to the other, said members being adapted to continuously squeeze material by reason of the relative movement and their eccentric l relation, and means for continuously draining the material on both sides.
3. In a rotary press, the combination with a perforated casing, of a perforated cylinder rotatably mounted in said casing, blades slidingly mounted in said cylinder, means for reciprocating said blades, and a by-pass in said casing adapted to drain a liquid from said cylinder.
i. In a rotary press, the combination with a casing having an inlet, of a rotatably mounted cylinder in said casing, reciprocating blades on said cylinder, an outlet chute connected to said casing, and. means for yicldingly constricting the outer opening of said chute.
5. In a rotary press, the combination with a casing having an inlet, of a rotatable cylinder in said casing, reciprocating blades on said cylinder, an outlet chute connected to said casing, and a pressure gate at the outer end of said chute.
(3. In a rotary press, the combination with a casing, having an inlet and an outlet, of a rotatable cylinder in said casing, reciprocating blades on said cylinder, and a shearing knife in said inlet adapted to co-act with said blades, to cut the material in said casing.
7. In a rotary press, the combination with a casing having an inlet and an outlet, of a rotatable cylinder in said casing, reciprocating blades on said cylinder, a shearing knife in said inlet, adapted to co-act withsaid blades to cut the material in said casing, and a scraper adapted to remove the material from said cylinder.
8. In a rotary press, the combination with a casing having an inlet and an outlet, of a rotatable cylinder in said casing, reciprocating blades on said cylinder, a shearing knife in said inlet adapted to co-act with said blades to cut the material in said casing, a scraper adapted to remove the material from said cylinder, and a weighted gate on said outlet.
9. In a rotary press, the combination with a casing having an inlet and an outlet and also having a circular groove therein, of a cylinder eccentrically supported in said casing with respect to said groove, blades slidingly connected to said cylinder, means adapted to co-act with said circular groove to reciprocate said blades, and a shearing knife in said inlet, adapted to co-act with said blades to cut the material in said casing.
10. In a rotary press, the combination with a casing having an inlet and an outlet and also having a circular groove therein, of a cylinder eccentrically supported in said casing with respect to said groove, blades slidingly connected to said cylinder, means adapted to co-act with said circular groove ing a circular groove therein, of a cylinder eccentrically supported in said casing with respect to sald groove, blades slidlngly connected to said cylinder, means adapted to co-act with said circular groove to reciprocate said blades, a shearing knife in said inlet, adapted to co-act with said blades to cut the material in said casing, an outlet chute connected to said casing, a weighted gate in said outlet chute, adapted to constrict the size of the opening thereof, and a scraper adapted to remove the material from said cylinder.
12. In a rotary press, the combination with a perforated casing having an inlet and also having a circular groove therein, of a perforated cylinder eccentrically supported in said casing with respect to said groove, blades slidingly connected to said cylinder, means adapted to co-act with said circular groove to reciprocate said blades, a shearing knife in said inlet, adapted to co-act with said blades to cut the material in said casing, an outlet chute connected to said casing, a Weighted gate adapted to constrict the size of the opening of said chute, a scraper adapted to remove the material from said cylinder, and means for draining the liquid from said casing and said cylinder.
