INVENTOR vMIIT'NESSES y/wzzw r ATTORNEY PRINCE C. HOPKINS, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA.
MECHANICAL TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
Application filed. October 29, 1908. Serial No. 459,981.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PRINCE C. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Santa Barbara, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a full, clear. and complete disclosure, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a toy outfit for a game in imitation of a tilting tournament which may be played upon the top of a smooth table or other suitable support.
In the accompanyin drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the game outfit in accordance with this invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of details of the outfit: and Fig. 4 is a section on line a e of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings the outfit comprises two or more toy knights or riders 1, loosely seated upon toy horses or mounts 2, which are carried upon suitable supports 3 mounted upon wheels a, rolling upon the top of a table 5. Each horse is preferably driven by a spring motor 6 of any well known type connected to the rear wheels of each support and having the usual winding shaft 7, adapted to be engaged by a key whereby the motor may be wound up. Each knight carries in one hand and rigid therewith, a lance 9 or other weapon of offense and rigid with the other hand 10 a shield 11. The arms 12 and 18 of each knight may be provided with universal ball and socket joints let at their elbows and the sides of the sockets may be split as shown in Fig. 4;, and provided with screws 15 to hold the lance and the shield in any desired position. The hand 10 carrying the shield may open upwardly as shown in Fig. 3 to form a hook over which the reins 16 may be loosely looped, the forward ends of which are connected to the head of the horse. The reins may thus serve as a partial support for the rider in the saddle. Stirrups 17 are also provided in which the feet of the rider rest loosely. The feet and legs of the rider are weighted and heavier than the upper portion of the rider to assist in maintaining the rider in his seat.
To increase the elements of chance in the game each horse may be pivoted to its support as at 17, the upper end of the support extending into an opening provided there for in the body of the horse and a connectmg rod 18 may be pivoted at one end to the horse as at 19 and at its other end to a crank arm 20 forming part of one of the supporting wheels whereby a rocking or galloping motion will be given to the horse.
The game may be played by one or more persons and with the use of two or more toy knights. lVhen played by two persons each contestant adjusts one of the knights in po sition upon a ho se and arren es the lance and shield in what he considers to be the most effective positions. The motors having been wound the two mounted knights arethen started toward each other upon the top of the table. The person whose knight best retains his seat in one or more of the encounters wins the game.
It is obvious that the chances of the game depend largely on the manner in which t e knights are seated upon their horse and in the adjustment of the lances, shields and reins. In playing the game several knights might be used upon each side to' be started simultaneously toward the other side to engage in a general melee. It is furthermore obvious that the motors may be dispensed with and the elbows of the knights made rigid and the horses mounted rigidly on their supports and other changes in the details of construction might be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of this invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patentof the United States,
1. A. mechanical toy comprising a mount, a rider loosely seated thereon, a weapon carried by said rider and means for adjusting the position of said weapon with respect to the body portion of said rider.
2. A mechanical toy comprising a mount, a rider loosely seated thereon, and having a jointed movable arm, a member carried by said arm, and means to lock said arm in different positions to adjust the angularity of said member.
3. A mechanical toy comprising a mount, stirrups carried by said mount, a rider loosely seated on said mount and having feet loosely engaging in said stirrups, arms movably joined to said rider, means to lock said arms in fixed positions, a weapon carried by one of said arms, a shield carried by the other of said arms, and reins connected to said mount and detachably connected to one of said arms.
4. A mechanical toy comprising a mount, stirrups carried by said mount, a rider loosely seated on said mount and having feet loosely engaging in said stirrups, arms movably joined to said rider, means to lock said arms in fixed positions, a weapon carried by one of said arms, a shield carried by the other of said arms, reins connected to said mount and detachably connected to one of said arms, a base upon which said mount is pivoted upon a fixed axis, wheels supporting said base, said mount being spaced from said base, and means actuated by the rotation of one of said wheels for rocking said mount.
5. A mechanical toy comprising a base, wheels supporting said base, a toy figure representing a mounted knight carrying a weapon mounted to oscillate upon an axis fixed with respect thereto, and means actuated by the rotation of one of said wheels for rocking said figure.
6. A toy comprising a mount provided with wheels, and a toy knight carrying a weapon seated thereon and having all portions thereof unconnected therewith, the lower portions of said toy knight being made much heavier than the upper portions thereof in order to maintain the same on said mount.
7. A toy comprising a base provided with wheels and means for propelling the same, a toy horse pivotally mounted on said base, means for automatically oscillating said toy horse, and a toy knight carrying a member mounted on said toy horse.
8. A toy comprising a base provided with wheels and means for propelling sa1ne,atoy horse pivotally mounted on said base, means for automatically oscillating said toy horse, a toy knight carrying a member mounted on said toy horse, and means for arranging said member in diiferent positions with respect to the body portion of said toy knight.
9. A toy comprising a base provided with wheels and means for propelling the same, a toy horse pivotally mounted on said base, means for automatically oscillating said toy horse, a toy knight carrying a member mounted on said toy horse, and means for arranging said member in different positions with respect to the hotly portion of said toy knight, said toy knight being separate from and unconnected with said toy horse.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-third day of October PRINCE C. HOPKINS. Vitnesses G130. W. SHORT, EUGENE P. MoOsKna.
