TANK-CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
Application filed July 21, 1909. Serial No. 508,830.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN C. PRIEBE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the count of Cook and State of Illinois, have invente a new and useful Imrovement in Tank-Cars, of which the folowing is a specification.
My invention has for an object a tank-ear construction that shall retain all the requisite resistance to pulling and buflin and twisting strains and yet so lower t e center of avity of a tank-car as to greatly increase its stability and reduce to a minlmum the possibility of its being overturned by tilting or by the side-wash of its contents; and the invention has for further objects such other improvements in construction or function as may be found to obtain in the devices hereinafter described or claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals indicate like parts in all of the figures, Figure 1 is an end elevation of the car; Fi 2 is a side elevation of somewhat over he f the length of the car, with part of the tank-wall broken away, and the sill and bolster construction shown in median longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the hue 4-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fi 3; Fig. 6 is a detail of the bolster and sil construction, partly in plan and partly in section at the plane of the top face of the bolster; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional View horizontally and longitudinally through the middle of the bolster and its junction with the center-sills and draft-sills.
20 is the cylindric tank, whose circumference intermediate the body-bolsters 21 is dropped considerably below the line of draft, each end of the cylinder being se mentally recessed to accommodate the b0(' y-bolster and the draft-rigging. Theitlat horizontal sectionof tank-bottom roofing such recess, at each end of the car, is formed by the flat plate 22, whose outer end and upturned lateral edges are riveted, respectively, to the inwardly turned lower edge 23 of the tankend 24 and to the lateral lower edges of the cylindrically bent tank-plate 25, and whose inner edge 26 is extended over and riveted down upon the top-flanges 27 of the Lbeam member 28 of the bolster 21, all of these riveted joints being calked oil-tight. The
central transverse or I-oeam member 28 of the bolster 21 is solid and imperforate so as to be adapted to itself form the heading for the segmental end of the middle tanksection, whose circumference is dropped below the line of draft, and this I-beam member of the bolster has integral with it an inwardly extended segment-formed projection 29 that fits within and is calked and riveted, at 30, to the segment of the tankcircumference that is below the plate 22. The plate 22 and bolster 21 thus together close and seal the segmental recess at each end of the tank.
The king-bolt socket 31 is located in the middle of the I-beam member of the bolster, and is additionally supported by the web 32 extending inward over the bolster-projection 29, said web also forming a seat for the ends of the bottom-flanges 33 of the channeliron center- sills 34, 34. Further inwardly projecting webs 35 and 36 additionally support the bolster-projection 29 and the inner upper flange of the I-beam bolster-member. The aforesaid channel-iron center- sills 34, 34 extend from end to end of the car, to sustain the pulling and buffing strains in the usual manner, but are entirely within the tank, and at each end their lower flanges and the lower part of their webs are cut away to adapt them to be shouldered up against the inner face of the bolster and upon the top face of the plate 22 that roofs the segmental recess of the tank-end. An inwardly projecting member 37, integral with the rest of the bolster-casting, extends and is socketed between the said sills and is stron ly riveted to them, at 38, where the shoulder against the bolster, making a rigi connection therewith. A like rojection 39, also integral with the rest of the bolster-casting, extends outward and is socketed between the inner ends of the channel-iron draft- sills 40, 40 and is strongly riveted to them, at 41, where they abut against the bolster, making a rigid connection therewith. The ends 42 of the center-sills 34, shouldering upon the plate 22, are rigidly secured to said plate 22 by angle-irons 43, each of which has its vertical flange riveted to the inner face of the web of the adjacent sill and its horizontal flange riveted upon the to face of the plate 22. The upper flanges o the draft-sills support and are riveted to the plate 22, and the ends of said draft-sills are additionally secured to the tankby the end-plate 44, whose lower part is riveted to the sill-ends and whose upper part is riveted to the tank-end 24. The, space between the center-sills 34:, 34 is spanned by the longitudinal tie-plate 45, extending their full length and resting and riveted upon the upper flanges of said sills. The tank bottom below the center-sills, intermediate the bolsters, is supported and bracketed to said sills by the plurality of brackets 46, gripping and riveted to the lower flanges and lower part of the webs of said sills. And the said portions of the tank-bottom, below the draft-line and intermediate the bolsters, is additionally supported by the pairs of laterally oblique brace- plates 47, 47, whose lower ends are riveted against the inner face of the tankbottom. and whose upper ends are riveted upon the tie-plate 45 above the upper flanges oY the sills.
It is plain that the foregoing construction provides a tank-car in which the tank is dropped to the lowest. possible center of gravity and yet entire rigidity and resistance to both pulling and bufling strains, along the line of draft, are preserved, as well as the essential resistance to lateral and twisting strains that would peculiarly tend to spring the joints of the tank and occasion leakage. This resistance to t-wistin strains is particularly accomplished by the manner of the rigid connection between the center-sills and body-bolster and draft-sills, and by the full lateral support provided by the flat tank-end bottom resting across the full width of the body-bolster. No material proportion of either the pulling or buflin or twisting strains comes upon the joints 0 the tankplates. The portion of the middle of the tank that drops below the line of draft is all utilized for load, the proportion of the load displaced by the interior center-sills and braces being inconsiderable. The flat bottoms at the ends of the tank provide convenient faces to be utilized in jacking up the car-body. The bolster casting projecting within and calked and riveted to the interior of the portion of the tank-shell that drops below the level of the top face of the bolster, provides a strong support and bracing for the part of the tank-shell that carries the heaviest load, and-so peculiarly stifl'ens andstrengthens the shell and prevents the warping and distortion that is one of the most usual causes of leakage in tank-cars. The brace-plates extending from the top flanges of the center-sills to the interior face of the tank bottom, intermediate the bolsters, additionally stiffen the tank-shell and provide that a great part of the load-strain shall be carried where it is most eflectively supported, on the top of the web and upper flanges of the center-sills. The bracketlng of the dropped portion of the tank-shell, intermediate the bolsters, to the lower flanges of the center-sills, not only supports-said bottom but also provides a considerable free and open space between such bottom and said sills, so that said sills shall not interfere with or impede the free outflow of the tankcontents from the usual outflow port in the middle of the tank-bottom.
My invention is hereinabove set forth as embodied in one particular form of construction, but I do not limit it thereto or to less than all the possible forms in which the said invention as hereinafter claimed may be embodied and distinguished from prior de vices for like purposes.
