THEODORE VARNEY, E PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC 6c MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CGRPORATION 0F PENNSYLVANIA.
- -ELECTRIC-TROLLEY-LINE CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
.-. .i Apolicatton filed y.Tune 4, 1905. Serial No. 320.140.
f To all whom. 4itin/ry concern.:
Beit `known thaty l, Timonium Vaiixnni citizen of the United States. and a resident of Pittshurg, iii the countyl of Allegheny and "tate of Pennsylvania, have invented i:i new. and useful Improvement inv llectric-Trolley# Line Construction, ot' which the following is a specification. v j
M v invention relates tothe construction of electric trolley lines and particularly to such lines :is kare adapted for use with sliding oi bow trollevs.`
The object of invvinvention to proi'ide,
in a construction of the class above indicated, means for avoiding any possibility of dani j, age to the sliding or bowti'olleys or to the electric contact tliirewith, a iid, coiiseil'uciitly,
t Sincea cati-nary form of line construction f of wires T cach of which is clamp end, to a relatively short angle iron S, und,
the trolley line at and adjacent to the point of contact with tho trolley is raised a matef rial amount. the trolley itself or the line is liable to he daiaafed where two lines come together at. a switcii oi' turnout in the trael, sincethe end By reason of this fact, either ot the trolley contact .shoe may become;
hooked over a line with which it is not iii engagement. l
ln order to avoid the possibilityof injuries ot the at' iii'esaid character, 1 provide a dcg tlector which comprises a plurality of guard wires of considerable length which diverge from the junction of the. two trolley lines, in
` substantially the plane of the tivo lines and are bent upwardly above this plane at cach end. f Each one of these guard wires is adapted to be engaged hy the trolley and ai'e near enough together so that there no possihilit)` of the end of the trolley becoming entangled in the line.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view ot' portions of two trolley conductors and a guard constructed iii accordance with my invention. Fig. i? is a side elevation of the end sections, and Figs. 3, 'and 5 are detail views of parts of the structure. l `ig. G is a icrspcctive view of :i structure which einbot ics the subjects-matter of the other figuresof the drawings. Fig. 7 is a detaiLyiew corresponding to Fig. 3 hy show. ing a modified structure.
is often eii'iployed for use with sliding or how trolleys, l have illustrated my guard in connection with such construction, hut-its use is. of course, not restricted thereto.
Referring to the drawings, trolley line conductors t and i are connected by a frog 3 and diverge therefrom at an acute angle y with cach other. These conductors ma be Supported in a well known manner rom pairs of messenger cables t and 5 by triangular supports it, such as are set forth and claimed in Patent No. 803.216, issued to Westinghouse Electric X: Manufacturing Company. as assignee of llarryP. Davis and myself.
.\ triilley detlectoris proi-ided between the y conductors 1 aiiil i' and comprises .bglurality at, one
at its other end, toY a relatively long angleiroii Si. ',lhc angle iron S located at a short distance from the. frog 8, between conductors 1 `and 2, and is attached to two of the triangular supports t? and also disposed substantially :it right. angles to the trolley conductors, at a short distance above them. j The :ingle iron 9 is similarly disposed, hut
at a considerable distance from the frog 3. The angle irons S and 9 serve as anchors for the guard wires which are equally dispud liciweeu the trolley conductors 1 and The u tres T may he supported, at a phi rality of intermediate points, substantially in the plane ot the two trolley conductors by means ofrspacers 10 which comprise cross rodsl or tubes l1 and U-shaped trolley hangers 1;. The trolleyiianfvers 12 are pro-V vided with projections 13 w iich are screwthreaded to receive pairs of trolley clampin jaws similar to those ordinarily employe in trolley line, construction. The len ths of the rods or tubes 10 :ire determined y the distance between the trolley conductors 1 and 2 at the points where they are located. The horizontal plates 1-.'-. of the anglo irons 8 and 9 are provided with holes throu h which U-shaped liolts lniay be thrust. or clamping the ends of the intermediate wires 'i'. and the vertical plates 1t`i iire similarly provided with holes near their ends to receive U-shapcd bolts 17'which may be einployed for attaching the angle irons to the triangular supportsti. Slots 18 are provided in the horizontal plate portion of the f- 'mapeo angle iron 9 in order that the angle iron may be attached directly to the Amessen er cables ,tand by suitable devices, such, or examle, as U-shaped bolts 17, as indicated in i 7, in case it is desired to support the en s of. the guard Wires at a greater distance above the plane of the trolley wires than is indicated in the other figures of the drawings.
Iclaim as my invention: Y 1.- In an electric line construction, the comf bination with trolley conductors forming a V- shaped junction, and supports therefor, of a plurality of auxiliary diverging guard wires ocated between the trolley conductors, and
supporting cross pieces clamped to the ends of said wires and to said trolley supports. 2. In an electric line construction, the combination with trolley conductors forming a V- f shaped junction, and supporting means therefor, of a plurality ofdiverging guard wires located between the trolley conductors, supporting cross-bars clamped to the ends c. the
guard wires and to certain trolley conductor supports, and intermediate cross pieces lclamped to the guard wires and provided with trolley hangers.
' In an .electric line construction, the combination with trolley conductors forming a V bination with trolley conductors forming a V- shaped junction, of auxiliary diverging guard wires located between the trolley conductors, spacing cross pieces orsaid guard wires, and trolley hangers attached thereto.
6. In an electric line construction, the combination withtrol ley conductors forming a V- shaped junction, messenger cables, and trolley hangers, of a plurality of diver-ging guard wires located 'between the trolley conductors and extending for a considerable distance in substantiall the T)lane of the trolley wires and gradually rising above saidplanc near their ends, supporting bars for said guard wires, and means for clamping said bars to certain of said trolley hangers.
" 'l'. In an electric line construction, the cornbination with trolley conductors forming a V- shaped junction, of diverging auxiliary guard wires located between the trolley conductors, and supportin bars for Said guard. wires, spacing pieces or said guard wires, and trolley hangers attached thereto.
, 8. In an electric line construction, the com .binat-ion with trolley conductors forming a V- shaped junction, of diverging auxiliary guard wires located between the trolley conductors, messenger cables and hangers for. supporting said trolley conductors,`support ing angle irons for said guard wires clam ed to certain of the trolley hangers and isposed substantially at right angles to the trolley conductors, U-shaped bolts for clamp-h ing each guard wire to the angle irons, intermediate spacing cross pieces, and trolley hangers attached thereto.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name thisl 31st day of May, 1906. y Y
n THEODORE VARNEY.
