UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. BEI-ILIN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 PR-ESSED STEEL GAR COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CAR-STAKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. REHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, Northside, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Stakes, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the present invention is to produce a car stake in which the metal will be properly distributed to provide strength and yet maintain a light weight.
Incidentally, an object of the present invention is to provide a stake which is so shaped that it may be easily applied to the car.
Such a stake is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a car side having applied thereto the improved stake; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a like section on the line 1-1, Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified construction and showing but one stake, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the line 66, Fig. 5.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a cross-bearer of the car underframe, 2 the car flooring, 3 the car wall sheeting, 1 the wall coping, shown in the drawings as angular in section, and 5 5 the improved stake. Stake 5, 5 is formed in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4: of a plurality of channels secured together web to web with their corresponding flanges extending in opposite directions. In the drawings these channels are of special shapes formed of pressed metal and are provided with horizontal outwardly extending strengthening ribs 5. As shown in Figs. 1, 9., 3 and 4 these channels are secured on either side of the cross-bearer 1 at their lower ends, being slightly joggled for this purpose. At their upper ends, stakes 5, 5 preferably abut the under surface of the coping 4.
In Figs. 5 and 6, a slightly modified construction is shown, wherein an angle section Specification of Letters Patent.

is employed in connection with a channel, the leg of the angle being riveted directly to the web of the channel with the flange of the angle extending oppositely to the corresponding flange in the channel.
The advantage of the construction herein shown is that the compression member of the stake may be provided with as much metal as the tension member, if necessary; or, in other words, it may be provided with the requisite amount of metal to provide the required strength in the stake. The same is true with the web of the stake.
Having thus described my invention the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A car wall stake comprising a plurality of transversely ribbed flanged members of varying depth throughout their lengths riveted to each other and to the car wall.
2. A car wall stake comprising a plurality of transversely ribbed pressed steel channel members of varying depth throughout their lengths riveted to each other and to the car,
wall.
3. A car wall stake comprising a plurality of channel members riveted to each other and to the car wall, and provided with transverse strengthening ribs.
4:. In a car construction, an underframe beam and a car wall in combination with a car wall stake comprising a plurality of channel members riveted web to web on either side of said beam, to each other and to said wall.
5. In a car construction, the combination with an underframe beam and a car wall, of a car wall stake comprising a plurality of members secured on either side of said beam and to each other, having inner securing flanges secured to the car wall and one of said members having an outer compression flange extending in a broken line.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES J. REHLIN.
